Hmm..

I only read the first post. But you know, stopped reading after "who the feck is Breen."

EDIT: actually, I read it a little in. Someone said "everyone is clueless about the story" which, naturally, made me lol.

That Dutta guy sounds like a complete lowest common denominator/idiot friendly world victim/troll. He wouldn't survive ten posts at NMA.

Unfortunately, there is a large group of 'gamers' who are just too stupid to think for themselves.

I confess myself amazed at the original poster's inability to infer anything from the story, and to miss everything that had been said in the game by other characters... the reason for Gordon going to Kleiner and to Eli is given. The reason for Ravenholm being full of headcrabs isn't given, but is obvious.

Much as I don't like to flame people, this looks like a clear case of someone who can't think even a bit during a game, or can't be bothered to.

I swear to god, they are lucky i wasn't early in that post, man would i ripped them back to stone age! Hate people who bad mouth something just because they are too thick to understand it!

Wow that is the low of the low. Maybe now you guys have seen the grass isn't greener on the other side you'll start appreciating how lazy we are here and why that is better! That guy on the garry's mod forums would be a good spectator sport.

ROFL he thinks DooM 3 and Halo 2 have a better story than HL2 HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

WTF?! ok... I quickly got bord of doom. and Halo 2s story was serverly lacking... i guess everything... Half life 2 didnt win GOTY for nothing.

Well you know, hating Doom3 isn't really a must-do if you like HL2 ;). What I do not get is why it seems that about 90% of the people on this forum think Doom3 was a poor game... but that's probably a different topic.

I have to say, though, I greatly enjoyed how the Doom3 story was told. The storytelling isn't superior to HL2, but is superior to many games out there, IMO. I liked having to read some stuff, and having a lot of elements to put together myself. That was great. Storytelling is what I thought to be one of the worst things about F.E.A.R. I was expecting the game to blow me away with regards to atmosphere and such, but the storytelling I felt to be embarassingly lackluster.

And that's why (as incredible as it sounds) hl2.net > other hl2 sites

I liked doom 3.

And half-life 1 and doom had nearly the same plot, btw.

That guy obviously doesnt have the brainpower to think and game at the same time...my favorite part of HL2 was being able to explore a bit and listen to the locals talk about what things are going on in their neck of the woods...really sucks you in to the HL2 world...

Have you played System Shock 2? Because as much as I liked Doom 3, the storytelling was mere shadow of SS2's. There was just so much more to the audio logs, which were just a lot more interesting to read and had things like recurring characters.

We don't talk about FEAR in anyway. ANYWAY.

That guy...well, you can see why I left to come to the light (aka here). One of them posted the saga guide in an attempt to help him. :O

I agree with ElFuhrer. Doom 3 is Far Cry from System Shock and System Shock 2. In terms of plot (okay, now we are a newly arrived marine and carve a path through Hell's legions, while other marines, who were stationed there longer and arguably had more experience, drop like flies, And attributing this to lost souls is far fetched, really), scare techniques (there's an Imp in the closet, oh, how scary), atmosphere ("This place looks like shit on a wall.") and finally, the audiologs, as it was pointed out (oh, PDA... "mumble, mumble, mumble, code is 874").

System Shock 1 and 2 are clearly superior, even though they are older. The plot in SS2 is a continuation of SS1's, a logical one, the appearance of the Many and SHODAN is explained logically and is a realistic scenario, the game is absolutely frightening (The first hybrid nearly gave me a heart attack... I saw it disappear into a corridor and crept up to surprise it with my wrench attack... you know, who got surprised...) and the atmosphere of a science vessel overrun by an unknown biomass, which killed off and absorbed the crew, as you discover and learn of human tragedies, plans to save themselves, as you witness the 'ghost sequences'... SS2 owns Doom3 at any time, any place, even though it is not a shooter per se.

Half-Lifes belong to the category of ambitious, non-cliche games just like System Shocks do. With a way of story telling that puts emphasis on analysis, deduction, logical thinking and paying attention, it clearly is a game for people who know how to use their brains, apart from buying a beer and staring blankly at the TV.

For this, I am grateful to VALVe software, as they resisted the temptation t dumb their games down to have them appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I hope these "idiot friendly" will pass, and there will be gamers, who can appreciate the surreal and grotesque symphony of oppression that the Nova Prospekt sings to us.

System Shock is, embarassingly, on my list of games that I should've played, but haven't. And since it's not a console game, I don't even really have an excuse ;).

A very, very good sentence about Nova Propsekt here, Mikael. I think it was by far the scariest part of HL2 - because it showed the oppression better than any other place, and made it seem very real. That's much more scary than jumping howling zombies in Ravenholm, though that place surely has a creepy quality to it.

Overall, I'd love to see more games that demand some thinking or effort in their storytelling. It can be HL-style, where you have to infer much of the story yourself, it can be Doom3-style where you at least have to read some stuff... too many games miss that point. They have other characters relay 99% of the story to you orally. Now that's boring.

I think the guy who didnt get the story is French -see how he spells Ravenholm 'Ravenholme' ... so he didn't understand the English well enough. Or he may be just stupid, but I like to believe in the contrary because otherwise my world would shatter.

Ahhh the Forum wars.... I don't have a single favorate but my few favorate's are Filefront's Half-Life 2 Gaming Forum's, a little hl2world.com, & hl2.net

LOL doom 3 didn't even HAVE a story... it was like "OMG monsters from our experiments gone crazy! its totally frankenstein!"

Its obviously people who have played too many games where you just go through the game and kill everything that moves, must have dissolved all of their brain cells =D

Ditto, i mean what a remlord, "Why was Ravenholm full of Zombies?" Uhh yeah notice the hundreds of headcrab rockets scattered throughout the town? Hmmm.....headcrabs+human=..................ice cream...

I have mint choc chip in my house, was eating a fudgeton of it earlier while trying out my new Halo 2 for Xbox, I'm never playing it on easy again THERE IS NO CHALLENGE..................WHATSOEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahh!! it makes you feel so good, when you can catch an idiot saying something stupid.
But be carefull, because this is called mental masturbation, and as it is well known, masturbation will make you deaf and you will be damned and burn in hell forever.
So you better quickly say someting even more stupid to save you soul.

By the comments i just read in that thread, i notice that most of us will reach heaven without any doubt. I just let you guess who will be saved !!!

It had one pretty lackluster one if you bothered to listen to the logs. I liked it, but gameplay is stale. Uninstalled it. There's space for better games.

And they can't make the diference betwen a very, very, very good game like Half-Life 2(he didn't know who is Breen ) and a stupid game.
"And who the heck is Breen??"-let's be serious everyone who played HL2 respects D.Breen.

Frankly, I don't play games for their stories, but for their technical prowess, being a programmer myself. I think in terms of visuals, the Doom 3 engine is superior, but in terms of physics, Havok is superior.

- The story is really confused too. Gordon has no real mission, the game begins with him being saved from going to some sort of a jail, and from that point, it's all about traveling. You go from Barney to Kleiner, from Kleiner to Eli, but why? What's the point? Is it because Gordon is safer there? Is it because he should continue his studies? WHY?! Nobody tells you.

I found that is interesting. The idiot boy kept asking for "why" and said there was no answer. But in fact all of them are answered in-game. Gordon goes from Barney to Kleiner for safety; he goes from Kleiner to Eli for research. There is just an accident intervened! Nobody tells you? BECAUSE THE GAME HAS ALREADY TOLD YOU!!! I am really angry now, after reading that guy's "comment". I must ask him, "DO YOU KNOW FRIGGIN' ENGLISH?" and then beat him hard.

p.s. Sorry for reading and replying the link that late.

p.p.s. I read the first page of the replies. Thoes people are not answering in sense. They call people to read the saga. In fact, it is not necessary to read the saga for getting the story. The story is perfectly told in the game. You need to read nothing for knowing the story! And it needs no Ep:1,2,3 to make the incidents in HL2 clear. THE STORY IS PERFECTLY CLEARLY TOLD! I think I am gonna raze that forum to the ground.

Well, it's not exactly clearly told. The story in HL2 requires that you pay attention and use your brain, but the material is all in there.

It's the little things, like noticing the water level is way lower than it ought to be. No-one ever tells you that the water level is too low, and that the Combine did it. You're supposed to figure out that they're raping the planet by yourself.
