christ mate thats a bit severe. it took an absolute age to download everything... is there not just one particular file with all the source textures in i could redownload?

Trust me on this one, I spent 17+ hours fighting with this EXACT problem on release night (12am to 6pm) before I got my game to work. And everything I tried before redownloading ALL of my steam stuff just left me with the same issue, and delayed me from doing the one thing that would fix me. I know it sucks (hopefully you have decent broadband, or it REALLY sucks), but it almost certainly will fix the problem.
