By five votes.

WASHINGTON - The Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed far-reaching health care legislation, handing President Barack Obama a hard-won victory on his chief domestic priority though the road ahead in the Senate promises to be rocky.

The 220-215 vote late Saturday cleared the way for the Senate to begin a long-delayed debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress. Only one Republican — Rep. Joseph Cao of Louisiana — voted for the measure; 39 Democrats voted against it.

Now it's onto the Senate. For sure the Senate is going to change the bill, which will require another House vote, which is sure to change the bill, which will require another Senate vote.

This could take a while.

YAH they get to paddle it back and forth until they're satisfied that the media has squeezed every last drop of sensationalism out of it THEN it will be finalized and ratified.

Damn, I just heard on some radio health break that about 36%, or 1 in 3 [American] kids born in 2000 will get Diabetes. They better get busy with this bill.

We're not so much about progress in this country anymore.

Um... that's actually a reason to fight diabetes, not pass the bill. Talk about wasting money on fat kids.

I don't get why health care is so important right now. The unemployment rate has hit 10.2% which is realistically 20% + if you take into account of under-employed, temps, etc. What good is health care when:
  1. You don't have a job with benefits which gives you health care.
  2. You don't have a job which equals no money to buy health care.

The average American who has been laid off due to this depression has been laid off for 6 months. Personally Nov. 26th will mark 1 year of laid off for me. But I really think it's because of where I'm located and I'm trying to move to SC or TX. I just have to get an interview or job there first.

True, but until they find a cure, there's nothing you can do but throw money at diabetes. And I don't think it's a [strike]waist[/strike] waste.

It's not entirely their fault, the FDA allowed all of this shit in our food. I almost killed my diabetic ex-girlfriend by sharing my energy bar with her.

A system of sugar tariffs and sugar quotas imposed in 1977 in the United States significantly increased the cost of imported sugar and U.S. producers sought cheaper sources. High-fructose corn syrup, derived from corn, is more economical because the domestic U.S. and Canadian prices of sugar are twice the global price [18] and the price of #2 corn is kept low through government subsidies paid to growers.[19][20] HFCS became an attractive substitute, and is preferred over cane sugar among the vast majority of American food and beverage manufacturers. Soft drink makers such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi use sugar in other nations,
Critics of HFCS point out a correlation between increased usage of HFCS in foods and obesity rates in the United States over three decades

They put this stuff in nearly every single food at the store. Everything from ketchup to supposed 'health bars'

Why do so many Democrats oppose the bill?

I'd say its because they're worried about the economic impact it'll have or they don't support the kind of reform in the bill. What's in the bill is pretty abyssmal compared to what should be there, but I figure they think its not worth supporting even if it is a step in the right direction... which it vaguely is.

But the whole thing is, you shouldn't need to worry about having a job in order to be able to afford health care. In Australia, we have a government option that is roughly $45 a month that covers almost everything except elective surgery and dental. Even when unemployeed, the vast majority of people can still afford to pay for health care. That's why reform is important now rather than later, so that when the next recession/depression/crash happens and people begin losing jobs, they won't have to worry about not having health insurance.

I am floored. I am absolutely floored. He manages to tie in Health Care reform to the shootings.
