Gather 'round children, and let me tell you a little story about how I came to like this game.

Long, long ago, in a suburb far, far away, I wouldn't TOUCH an FPS, because the general idea of one didn't interest me at all. In my mind, FPSs=boring shooting game. So when Half Life 1 first came out, I didn't play it.
Years pass, stuff happens, blahblahblah, I come across the June/July '04 issue of Game Developer magazine and see this ad for the Havok engine. My exact first impression was, and I quote, was "Woah." Mind you, I am a graphic designer in-training, so I work with this kinda stuff all the time. It takes a pretty damn good rendering to impress me.
So with the cash from selling back my textbooks from the fall semester, I bought HL2, not knowing what to expect. I figured that I'd play it once, and then leave it to rot on the shelf along with Dungeon Siege. I was wrong. So very, very wrong. The same day I bought the game, I ended up spending 4 hours straight playing it. I found that it was not only nice to look at, but challenging and fun to play, and *gasp* it has a storyline! My only regret is that I didn't play HL1 when it first came out. *kicks self*

So yeah...that's how I got hooked. :cheese:

Welcome aboard....arrrrr!

I saw my friend playing CS, i thought it looked good, so i bought generation, played CS, then saw HL and played that and loved it more. Then without realising or thinking i there was gonna be a sequel i found this site from a CS skin pack site...i came, i downloaded the binks and the hype started...you couldnt drag me away if you tried from then on :imu:

I bought HL1 at first because it looked pretty and the system requirements were low. That was the beginning of 1999. Turned out the requirements weer still too steep, and didn't get to play it until 2000.

I first heard about HL2 when that ad in that gaming magazine appeared. Just pure class, that crowbar that formed a 2 with its shadow. Everyone knew "that's gotta be IT". I followed it from then on.

mines kinda like Glenn's. My friend got me into CS, then i found out about HL and loved it. and now i pwn at hl2dm!

I was waiting a month or two before halflife 1 came out. I've always been a big fps fan, and hl looked like it was going to be a great great game. I bought it the first week it was on shelves, still have the original fold-out box too :afro: Then a week or two later i got myself a voodoo 2 3d accellerator card.

My world was changed forever. I've never stopped playing it and it's mods, i've never been into a game so much. Nothing's come close.

I estimate i'll be playing hl2 for another 6 or so years :)

Things i've done over the years:
Made maps and released them online (only 1 or 2 tiny 1on1 dm maps, Sandy, and Xenbase).
Made (terrible) models for the mod "Cold Ice"
Was asked to join various dev teams as a modeller, one of which being the mighty "Day of Defeat"
Helped create the (totally wicked fun) mod "Runaway Train", or RAT, with 2 friends and my brother.

Now I wonder what i'll get up to with HL2......... ;) ;)

I had a friend.

An FPS loving friend.

My first game, that i was hopelesly, hopelessly addicted to, was a small thing called Red Alert two. then my FPS loving friend got a small little game called Half-Life.

So, he invited me over. And i was lost.

Unfortunantly, I was about 10 at this time, so i was poor. I didn't have a fast internet. So i didn't get completely addicted to FPS's until HL2... i begged my parent to get it, and it was christmas, so...

...

DM FOREVER!

Ok, I spent most of my early computer years playing Need For Speed 3, but then I got my first decent pc. So I start getting more into games and stuff, so my dad's talking to this guy at the store, and he says that at the time, there were only a few games that we couldn't play, so my dad wanted to see if he was right. The guy said that Battlefield 1942 was a game we couldn't play. We sure showed him, that was my first FPS, and I got addicted. So I played various games for a while, then my friend told me about HL2. So like a week before christmas (thats when I was hoping to get the game), I bought HL1. Wow. And I've been hooked on the HL series ever since...

A friend of mine had half life back when it first came out. It was great fun. But i got bored with it after a long while.

Then i read in a pc mag about valve getting ready to launch half life 2 in september 2003. I wasn't at all excited about it a first, and i only saw screenshot of the game at the time and i use to think the strider looked ridiculous. But I was bored and i was on the internet so i decided if i could find a trailer of half life 2. I found it in half-life2.com and watch the teaser trailer, that was when i got addictted to it. Especially the bit in the trailer where they show a strider shootting at some citizen, blowing up cars and hearing people shout STRIIIDEEERR!!!.

And i use to think strider were ridiculous.

I didn't get addicted. The game sucks.

j/k

My boyfriend kept wanting me to play the game. For some reason, I believed that I just couldn't go back to playing computer games after playing on an xbox for so long... until I finally wanted to try it out. He told me to download Steam and Half-Life 1. So I did. I beat Half-Life 1 and realized that it's so much easier to use a keyboard than a controller. Half-Life 1 was so awesome to me. The story line especially. After beating Half-Life 1, he gave me Half-Life 2 and I was so impressed with it, that I couldn't stop playing it. It was my ideal game. I finally beat it a month ago. Now I'm addicted to Deathmatch too.

You monster :O

oh wait, does j/k stand for joking? :bounce:

oh, and i read about hl2 in Time magazine and decided to get it

Mine's sorta like the Mexican's, my friend had it a while back so I installed it on my computer. I never really got bored with it, I was just young then and I eventually got a different computer and forgot about it. I had mostly played it online or in LAN parties, and cs was just not my type of game back then. I played some of the actual game, but never got really far.
Last summer I found out my cousin had Half-life and that he didn't want it. He gave it to me and I played through it a bit further than I had before, but I did some stuff with my computer and did not play it for a while. I hadn't even heard of HL2, but around christmas time I saw it in the ads and it became one of the only things on my list. I started playing HL1 again (which I finally beat for the first time about a month ago), but then I got HL2 on my birthday (which is just after christmas). I played it about half-way through to Highway 17 before taking a break. It was too good to beat all at once, plus I needed to beat the original first. So now I'm on the Chapter Anticitizen One and I can't wait to beat the game. I was playing too much the past couple of nights, so my mom yelled at me and said I should be applying for scholarships (I'm a senior in high school). So anyways, now that I'm older, with my own computer, and all that good stuff, I'm hooked on half-life for good. Now to get rid of dial-up and get a much better video card for these special effects...

The school installed it on the computers and everyone had big tournie's during cmputer studies and with boarders on weekends.

Your school installed it on their computers? Omg I must go to that school!

It stands for 'Just Kidding'

Heh, I can't actually remember getting HL1, but it was one of the first games I got after first getting a PC...saw some screenshots (which turned out to be mockups) which I thought looked ace, and then out of curiosity I guess I just bought it.

Strange that one of the first PC games I ever played remained my favourite game until the sequel came out :) speaks for the sheer quality of the HL series.

This Xmas I got the Sims 2 and Battle for Middle Earth...I played BFME a little until I finally decided all the horror stories about Steam weren't enough to deter me, and I bought HL2. I haven't touched BFME since and The Sims 2 remains unopened, hehehehe...I'm now in "Follow Freeman" on my second time thru the game, and am the tr00 HL2 g33kst4 fanboy.

It was a couple years ago when my mom's friend's son(comp geek)built a custon computer for us,then we bought a game that he choose for us:Half Life.I diden't enjoy playing the game because I was too young for them, but after a couple of years I tried to install it and play it,it diden't work......When HL2 came out I told my mom to buy me a silver copy, she allowed, this is how I got into HL and how I am posting in this forum.

Well, it was on 2000 wen my friend introduced me to this game and the time wen CS was still at the height of its fame. at first I wasnt interested on trying the game... but my friend still managed to persuade me in playing HL. so... I tried it and that's where it all began.

I heard HL1 from my brother, all these hype stories of awesome AI and graphics and 100m high enemies. So, about an year after that I got a new PC cabable of running HL1, so I played it, but didnt really impress me.

CS totally got me hooked though, and when I first heard about HL2, I was drooling on myself because of hype. So, the game's now released, I play some Source game atleast an hour a day, and its seriously ruining my studies. So, HL2 <3

I played CS first before HL1, then I started wondering what the hell is this "HAlf-Life" thing I gotta install before playing CS. My curiosity get the better of me and I fired up HL1 and started playing like crazy.....back in....2000, me thinks :D

HL2? Not really addicted. HL2DM? I should start my own support group. Played it at a mates house, got hooked. Had to build a PC for it, but it was worth every penny.

Fps games I've been playing since Wolfenstien. Wasn't a big fan of HL, was more into Quake2/3. Allways get more enjoyment out of online gaming than I do off.

HL1: Played Uplink demo on my new PC (I was the first person I knew with a PIII :p). Asked for the game for my Birthday. Got Opposing Force on the day of release, that kind of thing.

HL2: Was pretty much already interested when scans of Magazine's pre-E3 2003 reports surfaced. I mean, it was the sequel to Half-life after all, a game that I'd since replayed about 20 times or something silly. Sat in download queues of an hour, just to pull as many of the videos from E3 2003 as possible. Watched the GMan and Engine demonstrations and pretty much didn't shut up about them until the game was in my hands :)

i have been an fps gamer since tie-fighter, that was probably 10-11 years ago. since then i have played tribes 2 the unreal series, bf1942, and several others to death. halflife was just in the loong line of games that i had to buy, even though i still havent beaten hl1 (just started surface tension)

I thought the graphics were horrible for hl1 until figured out how to change the video mode out of software. After beating hl1 it remained untouched until I watched a friend play hl1dm on his comp. So I got into that for awhile and cs but became bored with it again shortly after. Then one day I randomly decided to install the mod natural-selection and was hooked for a massive period of time. When I saw the trailers for hl2 after all the hype I couldn't imagine how the new plot and the dramatic scenes of c17 had anything to do with hl1. But it looked f***ing awesome so I became interested with the half-life saga.

I was on holiday and we had a stop-over in New York. I bought the US edition of PC Gamer partly because its main article was about the South Park game (which I believe got between 9-3% in PCG UK). There was some review of some game called Half-Life and it got like 97% or something. Apparently it was quite good. I'd heard of it once or twice before but hadn't paid too much attention. Then I played it on a demo PC in a Virgin Megastores - just the intro - and my jaw dropped. It was fantastic and I got me mam to buy it me there and then. As a Christmas present you understand.

Bambie eyes'll get you far in life.

Well..my big-brother first installed the Uplink demo, than after that, I played at my friends Half Life 1 and Counterstrike. I was interested in both. I bought Half Life 1 and was impressed. When my father was working for Nokia, he was stationed to America. Everytime when my father came from there, he bought me a game. One of those games was Opfor. I loved it also. Than I bought Blue Shift and was rather dissapointed to it. Than my brother bought me as a Christmas present Half Life 2 Collectors Edition. So...that is how I got ''addicted.''

Well, my uncle bought the game, and he told me about it, didn't buy it. Then i played the op4 hazard course, still didn't buy it. Then he finnaly gave me a copied version. This was b4 steam so it was possible. Beat HL1 was like oooo ya. downloaded a bunch of mods, favs were science and industry and tfc, then played those for a year or so. Later, my friends were playing cs so i joined them, since I had the game. Once I heard that HL2 was coming out for christmas last yr. I told my parents thats all I wanted for Xmas. I got it a yr later. go figure. But ya its still good. Sorta getting tired of DM, too much hoarding the grav gun and rockets. Cant wait till mods come out

I played the Uplink demo which came with a magazine. It was probably 1998. At the time my PC (Cirex 148Mhz, 16 RAM, 1 MB graphics card) couldn't run it very well but I still liked it and re-played it loads of times. I liked the demo so much I spent £180 on an upgrade and bought the full game

I saw the commercial for HL1...and said...exactly..
"God ANOTHER one of those games?...Boring"

Then woke up one morning to my dad playing Crossfire on our 56GAY modem ....and he came out a side door with the crossbow, and got a guy...he yelled "GOT HIM!"

Since then...I loved it.

Before this game i was obsessed with UT2004. I heard about it maybe a year ago and didn't care. then on online play in ut 2004, people kept talking about it and i thought it can't be as good as ut 2004. then i saw a game review for it and wanted to get it. played the demo and loved it. got it for Christmas.

I picked up Generations for €14.99 way back in the day not realising the genius of this game.

Loved HL ever since.

The E3 vidoes got me addicted...for you hard core fans you should get this "can i run this on my 386?"

those were the days...
wait,
no they weren't

Only 4 hours, lawl fps noob lawl. ;)

My friend was super hyped about HL1 before it came out. He bought it the day it came out, and wouldn't shut up about how great it was. At the time my only experience with FPSs were DOOM for SNES, and Duke Nukem and Dark Forces for PS1. In other words bad. So I couldn't give a crap about HL1. He finally got stuck at some point in the game, (I think it was the Nith, lol) and made me borrow the CD. Which sat on my desk for months and months...

Finally I played it, and so on... Then i became I a half-life junky. Then me and my friend talked ANOTHER friend who was anti-pc gaming to get it for PS2... then we had another convert. Then his PS2 got stolen, and he broke down and bought HL1 for PC. And from there it just spread like this really nice virus.

As for HL2, well, I didn't really care. I had seen a bunch of DOOM III pics, and I was uber hyped for that. I kept telling everyone to save their money for DOOM, and to screw HL2. Then DOOM III came out... and I had a lot of appologizing to do. So, finally HL2 went gold, and I decided to break down and buy HL2 silver package. I mean, the game was just gonna fail my hopes like DOOM III did, right? WRONG! HL2 kicked anus, and I can't wait for all the mods to come out, because I really can only take so much Counter-Strike...
