how does a trainer work?

I downloaded this trainer but it's just an .exe file. I don't eve know what the hell it does or how it works. I just don't feel like running an .exe file that I just download from some obscure website, especially when I don't know what the program is or what it does. I am having a hard time finishing this game and I was told a trainer could help... Yeah it might help, if only I knew what it does.

In my experience, you run the exe, then press the shortcut keys it assigns to activate various cheats (god mode, infinite ammo, etc.). Check around for a readme file, and google...?

Trainer's aren't illegal, are they? I used to use them for diablo singleplayer and stuff. They're basically cheatcodes for singleplayer, right? I dunno, nowadays I don't really cheat.

They aren't illegal. They just sit in the background and change a part of the game that is sitting in memory. (for example: God mode, infinite ammo, etc...). They are mostly for single player as far as I know.

If you're playing HL2, then it's probably some sort of trojan.

You can access all of HL2's cheats via the console.

You click it and it'll probably open a box with a list of what keys do what, such as F1 - Infinite Health, F2 - Infinite Ammo etc.

Then you load the game, then press the corresponding key in-game. You normally load the trainer before starting the game.

megagames is safe; which out of the 3 did you dl ?

as stardog said, you either open the trainer first and it'll have some instructions with what button does what, or you will need to load the game, then minimize out and load the trainer.

If its against other players who are playing online, yeah. I wouldnt call it illegal, but its against the game's terms and conditions and they can ban you rightfully.
