did they ever mention how long the opening train ride will be? i hope its a little lengthy , its fun to go through it .

it will most likely be the same as hl1 but no one knows who wants to spoil that

I trust VALVe to make it the perfect length.

Well.. We don't really know.. It might not be long at all, as depicted by E3 2004.

Would you change your avatar!?

Im guessing it will be under a minute.

I read you get enough time to look around the train, and the people on it...so its not a case of you pull into the station right away.

Since the game is trying to emulate the real world in the future, it will supposedly be about 10 minutes.

I hope it's long...I like being emmersed into the game before I play it.

It would be too much work for Valve (time they did not have) to create a large elaborate and not boring train ride...so my guess is they didn't.

For example, if they made it go through City 17 or what have you, it would probably take a while to make...

And if they had it set so you're just going through a tunnel, it would be too boring.

Chances are it's not very long, although I hope it is..build some suspense.

My heart raced as I typed that..I think I'm excited.

Or maybe it's because flying this damn fighter jet in San Andreas is so fun.

i hope it's long as shit
i just wanna look around for a minute before i play

so do i. i loved the train in hl1 and having a long ass train ride for hl2 will allow me to sit back and savor the fact that i have hl2 :D

A smart answer: as long as you make it.

Also if the train ride is like our train system then either the train may never arrive, you could be waiting hours for it or if you do get on the train you may never get to the end of the journey :(

Can't see any of those happening mind.

Sure you're all saying that you want it to be long now...but what happens when you replay it? Once? Twice? It might get annoying...like the tram ride from Half Life 1...

I hope it's as long as HL1's but I doubt it, I also read somewhere that it is short.

I suppose they(Valve) don't want the ride to be too long as I suppose you'll to see too much(Like a strider walking throught the streets) When they want you save that so you can see it in all it's glory.

I suspect it will be towerblocks, rundown houses etc, all gloomy and bleak.

Oooo my HL sense is tingling, It's close reeeeaal close.

I remember reading a while back that someone from Valve said that it wasn't going to be as long as a tram ride in the original.... That could haven't changed since then of course.

Hehehe says you.

I still enjoy HL1's train ride.
Heck, I enjoy it more on my 50th time than I did on the first. :)

Yeah, its alot shorter. (lol for some reason nobody can remember where they read this...) but valve said somewhere that they didn't want to take forever before you got to the action. They wanted it to happen right away.

They should start the train ride now and just make us go in circles until it comes out.

A quote from the guide:

"Look out the train's window at the gloomy landscape passing by. The trains slowing down. There a station in the distance, Welcome to city 17."

Doesn't sound very long to me :(

you CAN save the game right when the train ride is over and just reload from that point when you want to play the game a second or third time. alas........... not everyone is as smart as me :p

the first scenes in the trip are actually very cool, to make up for the lenght

that would be cool,
i would use cheat codes and fly out of the train and start running around killing people.

If you read some of the reveiws the train ride is supposed to be an obvious hint to the train ride of the previous HL, but not as long. I think that, though, there might be other things to build up the atmosphere.

One thing I really hope about (and something that I think will deliver) about Half-life 2 is that it more about atmosphere, setting, and storytelling than blunt action.

I hope it's as long as it was in Half-Life! Because the train will have more detail now and you can rome around and talk to people. :)

O.K I don't mind if the train ride is not as long, but I do want the gap between 'tension building' and fighting to be longer than HL1.

I don't want to be dropped in the deep end too quickly I want the heat to be gently turned up until before you know it....Your f*cked.

/Similier to cooking a lobster.

I hope it's really really really really long

The "intro" bits of games are always my favourite parts. The HL1 trainride, the Op4 helicopter ride, the BS getting lost in the back parts of Black Mesa and then getting in the elevator, the Doom 3 Martian Base before the demons take over, the Red Shift Martian mining camp before the riot breaks out, etc etc etc. I just really love the "All is fine and dandy with the world, and then BOOM something goes wrong and you have to react to it" introductions.

I heard the first two discs are only for the train ride. The other 3 are the actual game.

Long. :D

If you'd like to know what happens...

It’s brief. I was given the chance to test in early July, and I was able to play through this part in particular. You’re dropped into the action very, very soon afterwards, but I personally would say it’s all very much an introduction sequence for a good 10-20 minutes (trust me, you may not be on the train, but you're getting an eyeful, and fast). I don’t want to get in depth and really spoil anything. It’s quite a thrilling intro. You'll love it.

I hope it's long, but not so long that when I want to play through HL2 again I would get too impatient or something.
