How much of Half Life 2 do you guys think will be 'scary'? Personally, I hope that there is only a small portion of scary elements in the game, focussing more on all out battles with the Combine. I have nothing against scary games (I enjoyed Doom 3), but from what we've seen, I think the action parts look a shit load more fun than the freaky, 'things jumping out at you' parts. Opinions?

Well, I don't know how many screaming zombies I can handle. I mean. Did you hear the pain in their voices?? dang!

I dont think there will be much scary stuff in hl2.. hl1 wasnt scary at all so why would valve wanna change that?

Somepeople said that the original HL was a bit scary. I didn't blink an eye. In fact, no game really scares me, EXCEPT if there are spider like things, (eg facehuggers, aka AVP and trites, aka DOOM3). If there are spider things then my heart races and I sweat and jump at someone coming into the room and I simply have to stop playing.
As there are no spider things in HL (I really do hope), then I have nothing to fear about being scared. I do hope there are 'spooky' bits to the game, as I love that. Judging by the E3 videos, I think there will be this certain spooky element (and horror) in the game somewhere (ravenholm, that bit with gregory).....
I find that I never really replay games with spiders (except Blood), so I hope there are none in HL2!

Yeah I'm with you there Tiddalick, I hate spider-like things in games. Freak me out.

hmm. in HL the first time I played through the game, headcrabs sure had the shit scared out of me. there was just no predicting when a headcrab would jump at you from a dark corner and make it's high pitched slashing noise.

i hope that headcrabs will surprize me again in HL2, though i'm not 13 anymore :)

I think that there is going to be a huge huge part... say 1/2 hours......okay so not so huge..... of like ravenholm...... graveyards.......disgusting dying bodies crawling around etc etc......

That.....
Would be cool :stare:

the only thing that can freak us out are maybe if a monster suddenly breaks through a door or something. Forget it being scary as doom3 no way.

Doom 3 Hell Levels freaked me out completely, the Mars base levels were not quite as scary. It wasn't the Imps popping up out of nowhere either, it was the pure atmosphere of the maps that got to me.

I'm pretty sure there'll be some scary bits in Half Life 2, but like Yogibear said, it'll probably be in Ravenholm. I'm sure there'll be more tense action moments, when you're adrenaline is really pumping, in Half Life 2 than in Doom 3.

I dont think that doom3 was scary, just claustrophobic. (is that how its spelled? im norwegian :p) it was all just to predictable...

That is the shame with Doom3. After I finish it on Nightmare, I probably won't touch it again (until the expansion, then by my rules I have to go through the game again). It does what it sets out to do very well (the scaring), but the Trites!?!
Trites = friggin heart attack, then save and exit.

yeah hl1 wasnt that scary, it was more fun then scary, which i rather it be, doom 3 i think is okay, not great, i dont liek it that much because its too dark, you need a light everywhere you go i think the monster in it are great tho.. but i hope hl2 doesnt have the same darkness in it like doom3, and splintersell games(splitercell was dark to right?)..one think about doom3 i liked was wehn youd be walking tho a hall and you here someone say "help me" and you turn around lok up and down trying to find someone to help, thats cool hearing voices.

A headcrab jumps out from the corner of the vent, gets me every time, that's more shock that fright though. But I agree, more all out battles with AI than creepy corridors and headcrabss in vents

Doom 3 wasn't scary. It was repedative and goodlooking... = boring.

STRIDER!!

The scariest part is the Ravenholm part i say... their screams are creepy..

One review (I forget which one) said that different chapters in the game have different gameplay styles, and the ravenholm part is the part that is designed to be scary. Then there are vehicle-dependent parts, team tactics parts, etc. I figure ravenholm will be the only scary part by design, but I'm sure there will be a few 'boo' moments scattered here and there in other parts of the game.

i just played through hl1, mainly at night alone in the dark, didnt scare me much, but it had its moments... like when you're really concentrating (and low on health ;)) and a big alien appears infront and the platform below you breaks unexpectedly.. thats more of the scaryness i thought HL1 had...

Xen was some surreal creative stuff!!! not scary in the most part, just crepily odd :)

What I wish to FEEL most, is the feeling that you play the game and say out loud: I dont wanna be in that place now.. and that it gives you the creeps to walk in the suers and tunnels etc..
To get ALOTTA scared a few times is necessary.. but I dont want it to be like Doom3.. I had a turtlehead sticking out and biting my underwear every time I played it, that´s how scared I was, even though it wasnt a good game at all.

When playing HL1, I have a scary wibe all the time, since it doesnt matter if the graphics are good or not - moments when things jump out in front of you, or when you just turn around and there´s a monster standing 3 feet away staring at you.. that´s a scary thing..
I´ll definately be sitting on needles as I play it (thats a saying ;)) and I will love it all..

Doom3 did its job very well. Though for me the Trites make it 5X more scary.

Doom + Trites----- OMFG!

Doom 3 was a scary game, was fun to play for a little while then Rome: Total War came out lol Now I haven't touched Doom 3 in ages, should go back and complete it some day. Got to hell and then switched games.

Well striders are pretty big, also, only three legs. bigger and fewer legs=Less scared.

Yeah... thatäll be creepy

I think that graveyard part is reeeally creepy. Just the atmosphere of it, dark and strage things screaming at you. I get the creeps everytime I look at the video ;)
Sure, HL1 wasnt that scary, a few shocking experiences with the 'crabs and sometimes when just suddenly you take alot of damage and a zombie yells at your ear... those kind of situations will probably scattered around HL2 for sure.
For Doom3, I was somewhat nervous throughout the game. Dark and the shadows and first of all the sounds in my/players/His head were reeeaaally disturbing. And my pal, who had played it already, just kept saying me like "When you hear a child crying, then its time to piss your pants." But nah, HL2 wont - I hope - be the same, thrilling action has its places sometimes over those scary parts.
Yup. Now im off for little They Hunger, If anyone understood what I was saying.

Doom 3 was scary? :O

I was frightened of the Ichyosaur thingies in the water in HL1.

I mean, playing sven coop and jumping in the water with one of those things... seeing it race towards you. Damn, that's a freaking scary situation! I want my ass out of the water FAST!

I'll admit. Big and mechanical things scare the shit out of me.

The first pinky monster encounter scared the shit out of me. The tension and atmosphere when it tried breaking the door and then lunged in from the window - woohoooo. Scary stuff.

That was the only genuine scare in Doom 3.

Enemies chasing me is always scary. The part in Half-Life where you have to electrocute the Gargantuan scared the shit out of me, because you have to run away from it.

Doom 3 wasn't scary at all. It put me to sleep. Only the Hell levels were mildly creepy.

I'm not expecting HL2 to really be scary, but if it can manage that then it will be just one more thing to be impressed about.

Agreed... Im freaked out everytime i gotta go in water... (in game) I hate every underwater enemy...

I enjoy the heck out of Doom 3, constantly getting startled. Doom 3 does exactly what it sets out to do. It gives you a great looking game, with lots of killing, all the while scaring the crap out of you.

When I first got doom3, I could only play it for short times. I remember playing in the dark in the middle of the night, and the dog was laying by my feet. I forgot she was there until she heard something (that I couldn't hear) and barked really loud. The dog was banished from the room after that ;)

...and yeah, I still hate the Icthyosaurs. Those freaked me out. Especially in Opfor (I think) when you faced two of them at the same time.

I have a fear of big things in the water too. Like if we were in the water and a huge blue whale or something (like a submarine, oh scary dreams about submarines!!!!) came past.

I was playing San Andreas last night, swiming in the docks when this huge turtle thing came out of no where. I screamed like a little girl. Got laughed out of the room.

Oh the shame.

Underwater enemies are allways scary, no matter what game I allways fear underwater enemies, even piranhas in Tomb Raider 3
Hopefully HL2 won't have much underwater parts...

OMG i loved this game called "Alice" where it's like a nightmare version of Alice in Wonderland.... i played that all night long at a friends house with my friend and when both got freaked out but little things.... not like things jumping out at us... but just the whole trip fest of the game..... like halfway through you go all tripped out and can't see straight...hurts your eyes.....and the walls are like covered in blood...and there's like a little kids library OMG!!!!!!!!

Agreed, underwater enemies suck. Especially when its a dark underwater place. Ugh.

And well...I don't think HL2 will be as scary as System Shock 2...other then that I'm not very sure :p

Thanks.
