So, my mom is really pissed at me for considering going into the military, and the main reason I am going in is for college money. How else could I even get college money? I have just about no money right now, and my grades are pretty bad...

sell your body on the streets...failing that, do a mystery envelope on ebay

Already tried both...didn't work out so well.

If you want money, do what most people do...get a job. After college/school and/or the weekends. Or murder a relative whoses will you are in, but i don't advise that.

But most people who do that have enough money to start off, I have almost no money. I could take out a loan, I haven't really looked into it either...I slept through that part of school.

Work full-time for a year or two after High School (living rent-free with your parents would help), then use the money to pay for more schooling.

Well, I would take out a loan. It's what most people do.
But most people who do that usually have money right? Because a loan isn't going to cover everything...right?

dunno qckbeam please remove that avatar it gets a bit scary at night

well i'm going uni which is similar to american college...and they're telling us to take out a loan then when we've passed the course and are earning in the industry, when we're earning so much a year, you pay back the uni loan

dunno how it works in the us of a though

edit: shit this thread has just reminded me i've still got my forms to fill out

it works the same everywhere but what if you don't get a job right away? i think you're required to pay your loan 6 months after graduating or else your interest skyrockets. thats how they make money off student loans.

Do that german college citizen loop-hole.

I am not sure on all the details but If you apply to be a german citizen you can get a freee ride in a lot of dif german colleges (I think this only applies for US citz)

But like I said not quiet sure.

Hmmm i've heard from some people here that their parents want them to go to germany because Uni is free there, i guess thats what they meant. Apparently its a much easier ride in the states to in the UK hence the braindrain problem (doctors moving to USA)

They are actually very english friendly. one phrase to know, Du sprechen sie english?

I love you! I want you more than a Heroine addict wants to score some "Sh*t"....no

erm.. again, get a job. dont throw your life away in the military, you'll probably die in some cesspit in iraq or afghanistan. Get a job, work full time for a year and then go to college... whats what people here do, although we get loans too... the job comes in handy and you still Need it.

what do you want to study btw?
No idea yet, something with computers....I want a pretty generic degree too so I can change my mind if I want to. I want to be a game developer but I think I enjoy playing games too much (from what I hear you have to be very dedicated to the job).

Military is the best way to go. Just go in there for like 2 years and you'll live a much better life.

its up to you what you do anyhow not your mum...its your decision so if you want to join the military, go for it...she'll just have to be pissed off for a while

Depending on a number of factors you could be eligible for grants and scholarships. It's not only grades...ask your local college if you can apply for any grants. At my college they even had an awareness day for this sort of thing.

**** what your mom says...your future is up to you..not her.

So if you want/have to join the military to pay for college..then do it.

I'm sorry to tell you guys, buit if you join the military, your not going to be there for just 2 years.... I have two friends who signed up for four, they have been in for 6 with no end in sight. I would take whatever a recruiter tells you with a grain of salt. Once you sign your name, uncle sam could give two shits if you live let alone go to college.

Get a loan, get a job, go to school. Its not as hard as you may think.

Well something can almost always be worked out with whatever college you’re attending. One warning though: someone already mentioned how the interest rate sky-rockets six months after you graduate, which is true and a huge trap if you aren't careful. Thing is, around here some colleges have had the nerve to go ahead and do away with those six months and are charging interest right after graduation. The schools in question were apparently being rather sly about this change. It's extremely cheap on their part, and something you'll want to look into.

You may want to check out some sort of scholarship resource as well. You'd be surprised how many go uncollected each year and many of those require no more than an essay to put yourself in the running. There are quite a few niche scholarships as well. For example, if you're related to the man who invented the gatlin gun, you are eligible for a scholarship which will pay for your full college education. It's weird, and a long-shot, but worth a shot. So if you didn't get the greatest grade that’s one way to go.

perhaps you should have saved some money over all the years?

Anyway just get a full time job for a year. Make money, then go to school. Also if you wanna be a game developer you have to have a huge portfolio of past experiences and work, not just education.

Yeah that's true. The vibe I've gotten to the people I spoke to in the industry is that while education is important, they won't hire you unless you can prove to them that you have the skills. Rick Ellis of Valve told me that a degree was "a piece of paper telling us how great you are" and that they need a lot more than that.

In Canada if you get laid off from a job you can get the government to pay for your seconday education, but I doubt the states are like that :p
