It's so unfortunate now a days with games.

Doom 3 alpha...leaked
something with thief 3 right?
HALO 2 leaked!
HL2 leaked (early version) leaked!

What's even more sad is now valve can't even suprise the damn community with a GOLD date because we all know it's coming so soon. Hell, we'll all know the game is going GOLD probably hours or a day or two before. Just from all these recent rumors and statements made by the "inside sources." It's like any game that has any popularity to it what so ever, something ends up happening to it. I believe Half-Life 2 got it the worst, and it's going to be even more sad once it's pirated all over mIRC and P2P not to mention cheats coming out and just how well this VAC2 is going to work [if it's even ready!]...either way valve is great and they never deserved any of this, it just kind of happened. However, it was kind of unfortunate they lied to us a numerous amount of times, but it's all good now. As each day goes by i further believe Half-Life 2 has what it takes to make get that feeling i once had for Half-life, which was the only game to ever have me so immersed into the gameplay, plot, EVERYTHING! The day is finally here, woo!
 
Fear not friend....games arent the only ones in this boat.

In this data driven age, where access is all but denied, movies, games, anything digital , viewable or physically concievable, can be leaked. Information, actual products, developers under pants, you name it and they (they = random folks we love and hate) will leak it.

The HL2 gold date isnt a suprise, its a demand. besides, who cares if it goes gold, as its the release date were all really set on, as thats what really counts, play wise.

I recommend, getting over it and enjoying what comes from it. Pirating is naughty as we steal money from people who give us what we want. However, you cant always buy every game you want all the time, every time and thus this method is often traveled. Personally, its nice to download a game and test it before you buy it.

Exmaple, friend of mine downloaded Rome total war. I knew it would be awsome, but hey, i stopped by his house to see it in action. 3 hours later i was walking out of the store with it in my hands.

There is a plus and minus for every occasion.
 
its because people are very impatient and they want to play the game now (who the hell doesnt) but when they leak a game it ruins it for everyone who has been patient

Fact is we don't know it's gone gold until it's actually gone gold. You can say "but the rumour was right" but of course it was because there's always flipping rumours.

Yeah. Was really quite shite. Had the graphics and all, but it was really just three maps and only one had enemies in it. The models sucked, there were no cool physics to toy with, the animation was crap, and the gun sounds were all from CS.

Then again, it was a VERY early Alpha.
 
Stalker was leaked, not once but twice, two different builds were leaked, you had one with 3 maps like said before and another one with a aztec map, both very old early builds.
 
Halo 2 was leaked, yes, and you can get it on IRC. It's the retail version, and is supposedly quite good. You need a chipped XBOX to play it though.

I don't know how old you are but anyone who is suprised by leaked games these days is nieve.

They allways were and they allways will be. Did Mp3's ruin the music industy? Uh no. So get over it. Halo 2 leak is funny though. as soon as it was ready for print ...BAM. Ha. can't win em all.

My brother thinks all the leaks were staged so it makes 'Pre-game hype'

Sometimes I wish Valve had never mentioned Half Life 2. No screen shots, no E3, Nothing. We wouldn't know Half Life 2 was in the making until VUG had declared it "Gold", and an official release date had been set.

Nonetheless, the waiting is coming to a close...

Piracy

It is sad that most games nowadays come on IRC or P2P networks usually before the actual game is on store shelves. Valve counteracted that a bit I think. I have a friend that rarely buys any games, and wasnt planning on buying HL2. He was planning on getting it elsware. However, now valve has 50 bucks of his money because they released CS Source early, providing you pre-order HL2. Pretty clever. On the other hand, if he had waited a few days he could have Downloaded an online playable hacked CS: Source anyways. Damn hackers! (or crackers, or whatever you call them)

I almost always download games, but if they're really good, and I can tell they took alot of effort, I buy them.
Examples:
I downloaded Doom3. I liked it, so two days later, I bought it.
Downloaded UT2K4, thought it was awesome, so bought it a few days after.
I got the Sims 2 off IRC. Thought it was fun, so I purchased it that weekend.

I don't think piracy is bad if it's used that way. Now, if you download a game like HL2, D3, FarCry, UT2K4, etc, and never pay for it, I think that's a problem. I've never liked demos, because I don't think I actually get a feel for the game. But I rarely download a game, and keep it on my computer, playing it often, and don't buy it. There've been some games I downloaded, tried, didn't like, and uninstalled. Never tried it again. Maybe my values are mixed up, but I think that way is fine.

Yeah lots of games are leaked, but rarely will the company lose so much money that they have to go out of business...

not just that - people are becoming very tight with their money - why pay for something when you can get it for free....right ?

Well I'm officially on the fence on this one -

While I can't say i support piracy in any of its forms - I download so hence in a way i do support it....

BUT... HL2 is the first game I've bought in 2 years - I think the last game i bought was Max Payne 2.....

People are so fed up of paying £40 for a shit game that got good reviews in some bribed game review magazine.....

its not just the consumers who need to think its the whole industry that needs to shape up....
 
Just thought I would point out that Half Life 2 wasn't leaked like ALL the other games mentioned. It was stolen which is pretty much the first sort of theft to this scale in the industry.
 
Yes matt this is correct but in essence all of the other leaks are still thefts - I do get where your coming from though.....
