Hunter S. Thompson commits suicide.

:( my mom will probably be sad because this is a writer from her era

I don't understand why he killed himself...He had so much.

R.I.P. ;(

He was a very strange, conflicted man.

But he was brilliant in his own right.

Sad way to go.

damn, I was hoping for more movies or books from him.

Although I don't know who he was, judging by the responses, he must of been great.

i still don't understand the driving force to commit suicide. Especially from him.

Suicide is something you can't describe without experiencing the tendencies of suicide itself.

Right you are Danimal.
But still, their must be some understandable reasons of why he commited suiside.

Maybe personal problems that the media didn't get thier grubby, dirty hands on. Maybe he had some form of cancer and didn't want to wait around for it. We might never know.

I didn't think anythign could kill him... I guess in the end the only thing that could do him in was himself.
Say what you will about his past "hobbies," that man could write.
One of the only heroes I've ever had, inspired me to get into journalism

maybe he had terminal cancer, or maybe he was just tired ...still, he was 67 yrs old ...seems kinda weird that after all that time he came to the conclusion he did want to live anymore

great writer, will be missed

Shit.

Him, of all people. That's really sad. But, not to be offensive or anything, I really couldn't imagine him going out in any other way. Not from another person. Not on his death bed. I wish I knew more details about his suicide. He didn't seem like he was on the road to suicide. My guess would be that he got diagnosed with something and said "**** this". But I can't be totally sure.

Any way, sad to see him go.

See you in bat country.

He didn't seem on the road to suicide at all. His column on ESPN.com last week (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?id=1992213) is probably the last piece of published writing we'll ever see from the guy, and holds no evidence of a man on the brink. I can't believe he killed himself.

But, as other people have said, Hunter S. Thompson was ultimately the only thing that could kill Hunter S. Thompson. The countless years of adventures, drugs, cigarettes, booze and guns didn't seem to faze the guy one bit. He was invincible in my view, a man with some sort of impeneterable shield against which his own self-abuse was a futile effort.

A line from Fear and Loathing says it best:

"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

damn, a good writer he was :(.

i wonder what drove him to this tragic ending ..

r.i.p , thats all i can say

I've been following this as well and it's great to see someone who is as saddened by the events as me. I read that article too and can't believe he could go from such a crazy fun filled interview with Bill Murray to an end like this. It reminds me of Hemingway's death, a coincidence but still disturbing.

p.s. i got Gonzo tatooed on me nearly a year ago in China because of some cool stuff that happened, I wanted to be able to thank him one day ;(

WOW I didn't know about this. Hunter was a great writer. I first read a story of his in Rolling Stone years ago. I remember him on Letterman taking various machine guns and shooting the sh*t out of his new book. I guess we lose another icon too bad.

Never heard of him.

That is truly unfortunate.

Go to the library and borrow "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." You can thank me later.

i say psychosis, all that acid, hahaha he was my hero, im not sad that he died though, i guess that this was just the most fitting way for him to leave, under strange and obscure circumstances. he did love guns... alot...
while we're on the topic of HST, i just want to say dont waste time on drugs, theyre a battle with your mind and you always come out losing somehow, well, just dont do acid, some bud is fine, but from my expiriences, acid isnt worth it, actually i liked it, just be prepared for it and youll be fine

lol... you are a very conflicted individual

I know this is an old thread, but something should be added here.

Im as sad as everyone else here to see a great American icon die, but there is a nice little twist to the end of this story. In Hunter S. Thompson's will, we wished to be cremated, and have his ashes shot out of a cannon. I wouldn't have expected any less from him.

Heh...I don't know if it was the right way.
Dunno, he chose his own time and place, guess, based on the idear that he had done what needed to be done, compared to the troubles ahead.
