I figured out why Gabe doesn't post here anymore

Gabe is a gutless coward because he posts on a forum other than this one? He has no integrity because his company has missed target release dates?

I put it to you, Sickmind, that you are in fact a gutless coward, because given the opportunity to meet Gabe in person, you would not say to him what you're saying about him here. You are showing your own lack of integrity by assuming that he has none when you have never met him, you know nothing about his personal life, and you know nothing about what goes on at Valve or how hard he works to make a great game available to ungrateful, judgemental people such as yourself.

You're not alone in your way of thinking though - far too many people here have invested their emotions so much into HL2's marketing, that when things go wrong (and they will, that's life) they become angry, and personally offended. They then (like you) target that anger at one person - Gabe. The irony is, with this thread you're presenting a very good reason for Gabe NOT to post here. Why should he have to put up with attacks from ignorant people?

YOU are enough of a reason for Gabe not to post here.

I can't speak for everybody. I am fed up with people hating on Valve just as much as I'm sick of people acting like damn lapdogs. I do not hate Valve. I do not make fun of Gabe's weight. HL2 looks great. And I'm sure that the guys at Valve are great to meet in person.
But I am tired of having my excitement raise every time Valve promises something, only to have that very same excitement dragged out to the street and shot in the head.
And on top of that you're ugly as f*ck too.

I could've posted as him yesterday, I guessed his password on my first try.

Good thing he changed it.

Whoops, sorry, sorry. That didn't come out right, what I meant was "Kill yourself live on your webcam so we all get to watch".

F*ck, it happened again! Look, I'm really embarrased about this, what I was trying to say is "You're really f*cking ugly!".

sickmind, you joined a month ago, posted 28 times and you call us (strangers) brothers but in the same breath you call Gabe (stranger) a "gutless coward" (an insult that implies that you know him personally) ...somethings not kosher here

It doesnt matter how big the site is ..do you really think Gabe is going to spend his time replying to the hundreds of posts his thread is guaranteed to generate? For the most part valve employees make a brief appearance at a fansite post whatever news they have to the community and quickly disappear ..they dont have time or as I strongly suspect the desire to talk to the community ..especially when a big percentage of the community is represented by attitudes such as yours

in short: shaddup and stop whining

My Aussie friend, you don't know me...I can tell you that if I lived near Seattle I certainly would say it to his face...though of course in a much more respectful manner. It is easy to get carried away in a forum when you face only your monitor, and I realise I let my anger get too far...but make no mistake I do what I say, and I pride myself and my work on my integrity. I have no problem standing up to anyone and telling them what I think. I judge people by their deeds, and VALVe has not followed trough...you cannot dispute that.

I call you brothers, in comparison to the sheep at fallout. There are far more members hear that feel as I do, slighted, and they are not afraid to express it. My words for Gabe were wrong to express in that manner...I was wrong , but that doesn't change the situation.

I'm also Australian and not your friend. You seem to have attachment issues with strangers, would you like to talk about it?

I personally wonder how much integrity you have to judge in the first place. Let's try an experiment.

"You're a gutless coward!"

Whoo! Go integrity!

Don't think I'm just picking for a fight, because I'm not, but if you would honestly approach Gabe in person and call him a gutless coward simply because he doesn't post on these forums, and if you would honestly tell him to his face that he has no integrity, simply because of Valve's problems and delays, then you have far less integrity than you think you do, and a severe lack of perspective.

I registered at the HL2 fallout site to check out why they may be different, and why Gabe may feel like he can express himself there, and no longer here.

My conclusion?

I believe it's because Gabe is a gutless coward, (though not literally gutless for sure) and the folks participating on that other site are mindless sheep. :O That's right, I said it. :flame:

They don't have tough questions...they don't have complaints about being lied to...they are so mild mannered no one would get any amount of stress going into their house and pissing on their carpet.

THEM:
Oh hi Gabe, you wanna waste my time sitting in front of my PC for endless amounts of time, waiting to download a promised file at a promised time? Oh, OK. Thank you.
Oh hi Gabe, you want to go back on your word to millions of fans multiple times and give obviously false or no explination what so ever cause we'll keep waiting and wasting time with our tounges out wagging. Oh OK. Thanks, you won't here a word from us.
Oh, hi Gabe, you wanna F*** my wife? Oh, OK. Thank you so very much.

I am proud to have you people here as my Brothers, and though there are those of you out there that will say I'm just whining, I can take it and dish it out so do your worst my brothers...at least you'll be showing some independant thinking.

1. He doesn't wanna read the same thread with the same questions
2. He has a game to finish
3. His name draws both flamers and fans
4. Worried his words would be misinterpreted
5. Plus, don't you think he's done enough for us?

Not sure what you mean? Calling someone my friend as an expression bothers you? You have a reason not to be my friend? That's your problem. I view all as my friends till they give me a reason not to.

in a years time nobody will care, there will be other games to play and HL2 will be just another 'been there done that' thing and you will look back at this period in time and think nothing of it, NOTHING.
If you even remember it at all.
Why do so many people on the intarweb waste so much of their lives dwelling so much on things so trivial?

AMEN!!!! Best post of the year.

Did you read my statement? I said I was wrong for that, and I said I would be more respectful. I would tell him to his face to either keep to his dates, or keep it to himself.

I really don't care how others lead their lives...I see the good in people until the give me reason to think otherwise. Perhaps it's naive, but I believe that most people are good. Throughout my life I have not come across many people that don't deserve my positve outlook on them...though when I do, they can be real ass holes. You wanna be my friend, great! You don't? Fine. It up to you and I'll go on either way.

Well, you said you'd say the same thing, just in a more respectful manner. Telling him to keep his dates or keep it to himself is a completely different statement, having nothing to do with where he posts, or his integrity.

I'm glad you see that what you initially said was wrong. It's unfair to judge people the way you did in your first post, and it's also unwise to get worked up and angry about things simply because you're anxious to play a game. We all want to play HL2, but as I said earlier, the anger and insults in your first post are the sort of things that would discourage anyone from posting here, if it were directed at them.

Also keep in mind that no amount of anger or verbal abuse will do anything to speed up the progress of HL2, or change the way Valve operate. Getting angry serves only to make your experience as a HL2 fan a far less pleasant one.

I kinda agree with the original poster. Valve didnt promise us a specific time of release, but they did promise it would come out on Monday. So what, its just a preload? I dont think so, the preload actually being on your computer is a sign that the game is almost done, until then its anyones guess how long it may take. Valve doesnt owe us anything? I think they do, for being loyal customers I think they owe us respect. Without that, you will begin to see sales drop off. As most companies say "The customer comes 1st". Show me a company that doesnt use that motto and I'll show you a failed company. Now, the preload didnt have to come Monday, but a nice little update would have been nice. How long does it take to type 3 sentences telling us what the delay is?

Sickmind said:

So, you've met Gabe for long enough to form an opinion about him?

No, I didn't think so either.

How's about this; next time you're about to let fly with a stream of self congratulation, stop. Extend both thumbs from your angry little fists and jam them way into your eye sockets.

If you push far and hard enough you'll get through to brain matter. When you do, scratch vigorously and attempt to remove the defective "I'm really very good and you're not" part.

Members from Valve do post here and they don't answer questions that most people already know the answer too like:

Q: Why hasn't the preload started?
A: Either it or the server isn't ready.

Q: Why did you tell us it would start, when it didn't?
A: We thought it would be ready.

Q: Why do you keep telling us release dates that you rarely meet?
A: Why not? The vast majority of gamers won't care when something actually is released. Might as well tell people when we think something will happen.

You are absolutely correct... I have no beef with you Logic. I was fired up this mornig, and wanted to see just how others would react to my venom...now I see that it was not appreciated by many, and will no longer post my true feelings. I'll go back to lurking...though I've only posted a few dozen times and joined a short time ago as someone ponted out, I've been watching for a long time, and just couldn't hold back.

So I'll contribute no more, and let all the nice guys have their say.

Valve don't mean any disrespect by not updating everyone on what's going on, I'm sure. Sure, they could have better PR than they do, but that doesn't mean Valve owe it to us. They are putting a great deal of effort, time and money into the project, and that's more than anyone can justly ask of them. They're not perfect, sure, but that doesn't justify the abuse they get from many people around here.

If they want my money at the end of the day then they owe me respect. Respect doesnt include ignoring me until you see fit. I work at a grocery store during my summers away from school. It would be equivalent to a customer asking me to locate an item, only to have me show up with it 3 hours later- then ask why they are mad for my tardiness. I dont 'owe' it to them to get the item, but I should tell them that "Hey, we dont have it in stock now, so why dont you come back in a few hours when the truck gets in." And sure they are putting a great deal of money into the game, I will be too once it is released so it is really a null point...

Spit on? WHAT DOES HE OWE YOU! Every time one of you people come here and bitch, you have to know first that valve owes you NOTHING. The only thing we will pay for is the final product, we don't pay for them to work, or anything.

lol, we do pay them for their work, how do you think developers get money? They are paid for their work but if we didn't buy HL2, Valve would go under. So in a sence, they do ow us something....answers.

Actually, you're employed to do customer service so you do "owe them". If you were employed as a game developer then you wouldn't.

I, for one, do NOT employ Valve to be Public Relations. They got my money through a deal with ATI, and their part of the deal is to let me play their game. Everything else is ahh... superfluous.

Do they owe you anything, including answers or anything else? No

I can't belive this keeps coming up. You...have...paid...nothing...you...are...owed...nothing...

Hell, I am not paid to do everything they ask. I just ring items through. I was just making a generalized statement. The stockers would do the same thing however and they arent employed to do 'customer service'. I think it is every employee's job in any position to work on customer service anyways.

I'm afraid they don't owe you respect at all, your money buys the product, nothing more.

But that's beside my point - I don't believe Valve lack respect for us fans. I'm sure they have a great appreciation for the community (it's what's allowed their success after all), which they have demonstrated by allowing fans to tour the studios simply because they're fans, and by supporting mod developers, and even attempting to get closer to the community by posting on forums and replying to a LOT of e-mails. If you think they have no respect for us, that's an assumption on your part. You can't possibly know that without knowing what's going through the minds of the individuals at Valve, and it's a judgement you can't justly make without knowing just what they're up to. For all we know, they might just not cope well with stress, and are completely focused on things other than talking to us. Assuming they don't have respect for the fans is the same sort of judgement as assuming Gabe has no integrity without ever meeting him.

I knew this one was coming. You paid for an ATI card, you got a free HL2 voucher. You have paid nothing to valve, see my previous post. ATI can get pissed off (They paid for your copy) but not you.

Unless your customers are idiots. Then nobody wants to do it.

Have you seen most of the posts in these forums btw?

If they want me to buy the product they owe me respect.
Respect is earned, not purchased.
