Well today I finally got around to install Windows Vista Ultimate (I received a retail copy as a gift from Microsoft for testing it).

Man, it's so great! It's so fast performance-wise and it's just awesome in every way. I can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it later this month!!!

I'm also part of an ongoing team of testers testing the "Extra's" within Ultimate... Some of you may have heard of "Dream Scene" which was announced today, and they are also releasing Texas Hold'Em as a game.

Let's just say that Ultimate is THE way to go if you really want the best Windows experience. I'm still under NDA and can only say that I am part of the team testing those, and can't show pictures or videos. Sorry!

Anyways, is anyone on here planning to upgrade?

What will Ultimate have for the home user that is worth the extra arm and leg in cash?

Well we all have to, right? since those fags at Microsoft will only release DX10 for Vista.

Well yea sure if you want DX10... Don't worry, there will still be games coming out with DX9 versions for a long long time... Perhaps not a whole lot from Microsoft Game Studios, but from other companies don't worry. Nobody is forcing you to upgrade. If you want the latest and greatest, you always need to upgrade and Windows is no different. For example what about those people who bought an iPod generation 4 and then the generation five's rolled out with video! I bet they thought Apple tried to screw them over by forcing them to upgrade if they want videos... It's the way of the world unfortunately.

About Ultimate, for an average home user not too much. It is pretty much the combination of every single package, and also includes some extras (Texas Hold'Em, fancier desktop, extra photo editing software, and much more to come)... It's just the best Windows experience money can buy. Obviously for people who just read emails and browse the internet and not much else, Ultimate will be a whole less exciting... That's why they can opt for the Home Basic/Premium versions. There's comparison charts over at the Vista site if you want to know for sure which version to buy. Obviously Ultimate isn't for everyone.

Lucky you :p

How customizable do you think it is?

Liiike, could you change your desktop and windows with programs like windows blinds?

...n stuff.

Sounds like somebody is a fanboy!

Ill try it before I buy it.

I'm getting the home premuim asap. My dad and I just built a new media center pc. Why do you always get the cool stuff though Iced? :( Get to go to Valve and play Episode 2 and have Vista Ultimate ($400) for free. :(

Been "testing" ultimate final for a month or two

My cousin has been using Vista for a while now, Microsoft obviously lets companies test it before the buy etc.

He's getting me a copy for nothing, and my laptop is Vista capable according to its sticker. Ill try it on the laptop before risking my PC i think.

Nothing will work on Vista though, especially games surely???

One of the most eagerly awaited titles is Halo 2 Vista. Although not a DirectX 10 title (it utilizes DirectX 9), this installment of the famed franchise will make its debut on the Windows Vista platform and witness the Master Chief continue the fight against the Covenent in the most lavish environments ever created for a PC?environments that have been heretofore impossible but not with the advent of Windows Vista.

You've got to be fucking kidding me

Aha ok i wrote that wrong. I meant, wont XP games (basically today's modern games) have problems running on Vista? Or does that problem only apply to the beta version they publicly released?

Iced Eagle, any headsup on compatibility issues between games and the 64bit edition of Ultimate. So far, only the dreamsene would be an interesting update, poker is shit.

Was gonna order the OEM version of Ultimate (all OEM versions are available from this friday) until i found out that there aren't any drivers out yet for my mobo and graphics card...

How is the performance? Better than XP? As in more responsive/less hardware demanding?

I'll get it after bugs are ironed out, it can't be too bad though (actually it should be a whole lot better after that). I'm looking forward to it despite that it's forcing to upgrade because of dx10, but I look forward to other features as well.

Well I've only had it installed for a little over 12 hours so far, but it's awesome.

Performance is amazing for me (I have a Windows Experience Rating of 4.3) and I have all of the fancy graphical effects on.

My comp setup is a P43.2 GHz w/ Hyper-Threading, 1 GIG RAM @ 533mhz, 256mb GeForce 6800 GTO, Creative Labs Audigy.

The only hardware which had trouble installing was the Creative one since they haven't released a final driver version yet. The beta one they have is perfectly fine however and I haven't noticed any audio glitches.

Fanboy? Eh, probably... If someone gave you almost half a grand worth of software I'm sure you wouldn't be pissed at them however. I've also had the privilege to go to the Microsoft campus and meet a lot of Vista employees (and also a Bungie employee too), so I know that these guys are really trying their best to get the best Windows out there that they can.

Razor: No idea on 64-bit compatibility... I don't have a 64-bit machine.

TBH, a whole lot of issues that people have with the programs isn't directly caused by Vista, but rather by the software vendors. They need to sort of get out of the mindset of working with XP where you are always an administrator and not a standard user (a huge change) and a lot of programs aren't set up for this. Give it a few months and software vendors will start to adapt and release new products. For now though there are usually workarounds. For example, Punkbuster natively doesn't work since it dug deep into your system files to check for tampering. Now that we're in Vista it can't access those files. It's a simple fix of telling the program to run in administrator mode and it works. It's just small things like that.

About Halo 2 for Vista, that's marketing people talk... Some of the experiences they put into the game (probably the Live Guide and other Live Anywhere stuff) they are keeping Vista exclusive to push the platform forward.

The best advice I can give to people is that if you don't like what Microsoft is doing, don't buy their product. You can get a Mac or build a Linux box if you really think those are better options. Nobody is forcing you to upgrade, but there sure as hell is incentive to upgrade!

No jiggly windows.

StardogChampion: What do you think doesn't work? Tell me some program names and I'll try some of them to see if they work. To start off, Steam and all of those games work fine and performance is better in some cases.

I won't upgrade till I get a dx10 card which by that point most of the bugs and such that vista has should be fixed

I would use vista, the only problem is trusted computing. I simply wont touch it

Well i also have been using Vista Ultimate for a few months and like Iced Eagle says it's the way to go. Despite having more graphical features i have noticed better performance my Windows Experience Rating is 4.3 aswell. The majority of program i have tested works fine Nero warns it might been incompatible but it seems fine to me Vista would not let me install alcohol 120 but i don't really care.

Like Iced Eagle the only hardware i had trouble installing was my Creative Xfi card sound cuts out but it rarely happens just gotta wait for Creative

Games despite using Ati's beta drivers performance is excellent some games work better than Xp for example HL2,ep1,oblivion Flight Simulator X,Hitman blood money all work better and it solved my looping sound crash some work less better FEAR and extraction point.

Overall i would recommend at first i was not to sure but i totally love it now i find it really hard to go back to Xp

Razor: Napster works fine i just set it to XP compatibilty and to run as administrator and i have had no problems.

How much are you guys getting paid to advertise this?

someone with 2k + posts usually isn't in it for advertising

Hai guys, Vista is so awesome and you should buy it because it's awesome, the desktop is in 3d and it's like, **** me in the ass with an iron stick because it's totally in your ****ING FACE, you should buy the ultimate edition because it's the ultimate, yo!

(Incidentally, I'm going to wait to get it for awhile. I'm going to wait til a couple patches come out and DX10 cards come down in price.)

I say, Customizability?

Can you use alternate shells for the desktop etc. the same way you can with XP?

Let's just say the rule of thumb is that if you can do it for XP there is certainly a way to do it for Vista... Sometimes you need new ways or programs to conform to Vista's new way, but you can definitely do the same old things. Hell, I can pretty much make Vista go back to the old Windows Classic look if I really wanted to. That's what I have installed on my parents laptop since it is a very slow machine and can't do Aero graphics.

I'm not advertising anything, either... Just stating my opinion.

BTW, what bugs are you guys worried about that you want to wait until the first service pack? Right now I'm not finding a whole lot that would require people to wait... But if people want to wait, then feel free and Vista will be that much better by the time you get it with SP1 :) I'm not saying that's a dumb choice or anything because I'm sure that if I didn't get a free copy I would be doing the same... Now that I have it though, I would have slapped myself for waiting.

I know I'm not going to convince anybody to buy it or such, but I'm just saying give it a try and don't give into the belief that Vista is a buggy POS cause it certainly is not.

The first service pack tends to fix the critical issues that inevitably crop up in the first 6 months or so of widespread use.

My previous experience of practically every MS OS tells me to wait until at least SP1. With no compelling reason to switch to Vista before then (Halo 2? Yawn), I'll stay where I am for a while.

I'm most likely going to be in the same camp. Can someone tell me, having read various sources and seen various conversations on it, did microsoft change their stance on the number of hardware changes you were allowed with vista etc, and go back to the same system as XP, whereby you are allowed a certain number of hardware changes before you needed to get a new key etc.

Yes, its like XP now.
