I have this message when I try and load HL2

I get this message whenever I load HL2 from CD, Steam =

'Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit'

Any Ideas? I have retail.

So you can load the game without the disc. I get the above message clicking on the icon. Take the disk out still online I get the insert disc warning. I take the CD out put it in. Loads up to the Valve page click on play and nothing happens, zero, zilch.

yes. but i disable it.
