My mom's POS mac laptop won't read my brand spankin new copy of Red Hot Car...

WTF. I put the cd in and it makes a burping sounds like that thing your mother shoves up her ass, and then spits it right back out.

WHY?

because 'everything just works' on a Mac

I don't know. Is the CD upside down?

Try hitting it a few times. That always works in the movies.

Macs don't get viruses.

lol because no one bothers to write viruses for macs.

I don't know what "Red Hot Car... " is

Is it a movie or music cd?

If it's a DVD, Maybe she just has a CD rom, not a DVD rom.

It's a single by Squarepusher.

And no, that wouldn't even be a problem, because this thing's supposed to have a DVD burner.

I don't suppose there is anything else you can test it on.

I actually got a defective disc ONCE. It even had ****ing fingerprints permanently embedded on it.

Anyway, to troubleshoot, try a different CD and see if that works.

I bought 3 CDs today, all but this one works.

And the disc itself looks fine. The only thing is that it looks like MAYBE, MAYYYBBEE, it was printed a SLIGHT bit offcenter, but I can't believe that'd affect anything.

There's only one other machine here I could try it on, and I can't do that till morning, but i'm willing to bet that it'll work fine...

If you hold shift and minimize a window, it minimizes in slow motion.

I have concluded that this is why people like Macs.

I found that out at school in lab once. I had to show it to everyone in the class. So I lost about half an hour of work time because of a Mac. Go Go MAC EFFICIENCY!

Sometimes I wish the close window button was on the ****ing left side. How about putting the button on both sides! DOUBLE WIN

I bet I would accidentally shut it all the time. F***

We have Macs at our school. They're ****ing shit and I hate them D:

The last time I touched a Mac was back in primary school. I even had to use Netscape Navigator. D:

Macs are pretty horrible anyway, and one could easily run the Mac OS on a windows PC, so I guess it's just all about looks.

TBH if I was given a Mac, I would be somewhat disappointed if it was the computer one.

Your mum bought herself a "s-mac" in the face of a laptop it seems.

The only reason I'd buy a Mac would be to help the "save-the-world" foundation effort by immediately tossing the waste of plastic and silicon in the recycle bin.
This would be of course, if I was extremely wealthy.

Macs cost way too much for what they don't give the consumer in return imo.

Copy protection maybe? When I bought Aphex Twin's Druqks album that didn't even work in my DVD player, let alone any PC I tried it on.

My uncle works for apple and when he trys to convince my family to get a Mac and uses that arguement I always counter it back with that.

Sorry, wrong. Mac OS looks for a special chip on the motherboard every time it boots I think. This is specifically to prevent it being installed on non Mac hardware.

This.

OS X itself really isn't that bad. I think the reason people hate it so much is that they're just not used to it.

I dont think the hate has much to do with the Mac OS it self. Speaking for myself here I just can't stand the elitism that has been built up around the mac by their marketing scheme. And it seems like every douchebag on the planet has bought in to that scheme.

You prefer to use a mac? Good for you, just don't lecture me on how superior you are as a result (because you aren't).

apple is smart ; they cater to their own fanatic fanbase, it's just that the general public gets swept in with them because unlike most other companies their products rarely suck ...but the culture is absolutely no different than nintendo fanboys or Halo fanboys or whatever ..people line up for apple products just like they did for the xbox or ps3 or nintendo except apple gets the bulk of hate because a. most those that complain cant afford their products or b. it's a leftover from the pc vs mac debate that has been going on since the first personal computer hit the market. it all comes down to: who gives a **** what other people are using?

Oh, I agree with you completely. Macfags with a superiority complex are the ****ing worst. So you can afford to buy an overpriced computer, good for you, now gtfo. It's nothing to feel superior about--macs are essentially for people who are too stupid to use Windows.

just like mercedes is for people too stupid to drive fords

Don't get me wrong, I do like my mac and I think OS X is great, but that's because I only use it for "casual" stuff--internet, photochop, music, etc. Whereas I have a PC that I built for gaming and hardcore nerdiness. I like OS X because it's simple and intuitive, and perfect for what I use it for. I'm not going to go creaming my panties over it, because it's not THAT great. And I still use Windows for the shit it can't do.

did you purchase your mac with your own money or is it a family pc?

In spite of this thread, I've decided to put on Ultravisitor on my MacBook. Works fine. Sucks to be you, Sinko. :p

/enjoys

Moving to Mac has been the best thing to happen to me when it comes to computer based stuff, but then I'm not a PC gamer (lack of games to play) so that was never a problem for me.

I don't think its a matter of apple products not sucking, I think its a matter of people being a lot more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt than they do to others. Look at what apple is doing lately, they are turing in to M$ Jr. The fact they promised to make the SDK program for iPhone open to pretty much everyone and then changing their mind after people such as myself bought the iTouch as a result of this promise certainly sucked. Mac OSX 10.5 had a lot of issues during release that certainly sucked. Their anti-competative nature (not allowing the os to be loaded on anything but an approved mac or threatening a lawsuit against openmac) certainly sucks.

But in the eyes of many apple can do no wrong. If M$ does something like this you hear the internets go crazy. When apple does it then it's not that big of a deal.

You are absolutely right, it boils down to "who gives a **** about what others are using". Which is exactly the problem I have with the "culture" around the macs. I would argue that comparing it to a halo or a ps3 fan boy isn't really accurate. Those fan boys tend to be little kids that I usually don't run in to on the streets, only in places like this. When it comes to Macs it seems every age group everywhere is affacted, and I am getting sick of hearing from my boss how superior macs are to the set up I put in place based around windows. Gets pretty ****ing annoying after a while.

because they have a history of making good products ..and windows pc is still the dominate platform by w very wide margin ..mac has in and around a 5% market share ..the overwelming majority of people of use apple products own an ipod or iphone ..the bandwagoneers are not running out and buying mac pros

it's business, buninesses are in it for the money..customer loyalty only goes as far as how much they're willing to lose

people get so wrapped up in fan-boyism that when something does go wrong they're foaming at the mouth ..this is unprecedented, no one demands that sort of product of fanatism with Count Chocula or Pilsbury Dinner Rolls or whathave you ..apple is no different than boutique vendors like Voodoo or Alienware: high end products aimed at customers with more disposable income than the average pc user

mac, as much as computers were in the mid 90's, are a status symbol ..just like sports cars, expensive jeans, 300$ running shoes etc

Their anti-competative nature (not allowing the os to be loaded on anything but an approved mac or threatening a lawsuit against openmac) certainly sucks.

it's just product protectionism ..it's no different than Microsoft having a closed network where people cant make their own homebrewed games: why would they allow that when they can make money from xbox live arcade?

But in the eyes of many apple can do no wrong. If M$ does something like this you hear the internets go crazy. When apple does it then it's not that big of a deal.

because microsoft doesnt inspire customer loyalty in any shape or form ..if that were true the Zune would be leaping off store shelves

in my experience the most vocal mac haters are teens/young adults ..those who are a little older and have more disposable income tend to be a little more accepting towards the apple brand ..I mean how many teens can afford a $600 iphone? and if they can it's rarely money they've earned themselves so the aquisition of such a coveted product might be joyless because they didnt purchase itout of their own pocketbooks

I'm overgeneralising somewhat but I'm just trying to illustrate a point

Nah, they've hacked it so you can run Mac OS on a Windows machine. Infact, it's been hacked for a long time, some people are more fanatical about installing Mac OS on their Windows machine then installing Linux on their Windows machine.

Mac's alright, but the only reason I'd buy it over a PC is for the interfaces on the Mac Applications like Final Cut Pro, and Logic Pro (Whatever they're called), the fact that driver problems are non-existentant on Mac for the most part (Atleast, this is true for Music Hardware), and the recording industry recognizes people who use Macs as their DAW more... sadly...

I totally disagree with this, on a 7$/hour job I can make 2,000$ a month.. I think, it might've been 1,500$. Either way, it's a lot of money. Some of the smarter kids know some very cool, legal ways of making money too.

it's $1120 a month and that's before taxes IF you worked 40 hours a week. If you are working 40 hours a week chances are you're not in school ..so sure you can afford to spend half a month's earnings on a gadget but only if 100% of that money is for recreational actvities. you couldnt afford to buy a car or rent an apartment on that salary

Well, the CD plays fine on my uncle's PC.

**** you Jobs.

And **** you too Warp records and your damned copy protection.

Wow. I use a mac and never have problems with it. I use OSX for my day to day stuff and Windows for gaming.

It was a gift so i cant complain.

I was wondering if Stern was going to find this thread. Remember that other Mac thread in the hardware section? Oh the debates we had. Good times.
