I just got Unreal Tournament 2004. I have a great time running it on 1600x1200x16 and all the stuff set to high, on most times, I get around 70+ framerates. I played on the Single-player ladder and I got to the first level of the Team qualification part. That's where the problem first occured. What happens is everyone once in a while ( this happens quite a lot of times in one session), the keyboard freezes and so does the mouse. How do I know it's not in-game lag? My character keeps moving to the last direction I pressed on the key-board. Then I decided to restart the game... The problem still occured. So I decided to restart my computer...the problem was still remained. I tried lower my graphical resolution and detail to the lowest settting hoping that would fix the problem. Guess what? I still had the problem. I tried other methods such as disabling and enabling 'reduce mouse lag' and turning off mouse smoothing and other options in the 'input' options menu. Alas, my efforts failed.
Can anyone fix this? If it matters, my computer specs are:
*Intel Pentium 4- 1.8 Ghz 533 Mhz FSB
*512 MB ram
*Power Color ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB/256-bit

There are a couple of patches (and bonus) packs out. You should download them and see if that solves your problem

PS - I like your avatar. Q2 is one of my favorite games of all-time.

I was considering installing the latest patch. I'll go see if it'll fix the problem. Will I loose all the information saved in my single-player ladder profile?

And yes...Quake 2 does kick ass.

Don't know. I don't think so because UT2k4 is a really stable game. The patches primarily fix some various balancing issues.

I don't own a joystick. Thanks for the suggestion of the patch. The problem still occurs but occurs around 10% less. And not as long. But it's still a bother...especially in the areas that take up a lot of system recources. I remember that I had a perfect opportunity to kill two guys when I jumped over their head from a ledge and the mouse and keyboard froze up so I landed and stood their like an idiot and died.
But I was having too much damn fun in AS-Mothership. The problem still hasn't been fix just to let you know.

ROFL, i can really relate to that....lol.

My character kept running in circles, i was like, errrrrrrrr......

I had my steering wheel plugged in, so what I did was I enabled center spring for UT2004 in the Logitech panel, so now the steering wheel resets itself to center when entering a game and stays there.

Oh yeah, just a question that might help, is your mouse and kb USB or PS2? And if both are USB, is your mouse plugged into your kb like on some gateways and such?

I am thinking hardware conflict, or another program popping up much like sticky keys does. Perhaps you are accidentally pressing an "accessory" button on your mouse causing a window to appear or an application that steals focus but does not minimize the game?

I think that it's some sort of mouse/keyboard incompatibility. Try maybe getting new drivers for those.

Any links? My mouse is from Microsoft and God knows who made my keyboard. Oh, and by the way, this only happens for Unreal Tournament 2004. I don't have this problem for other games. And this only occur in in-game sessions. This problem doesn't happen when I am on the main menu.

If nothing else works (I didn't care to read user suggestions), check your keyboard and mousewire for glap. My mouse froze my computer before because I had banged it and broken it internally against the wall pushing my PC back (Several times without noticing it). So I even reinstalled windows and everything, it didn't help! I bought a new mouse after that, a newer version but the same Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical 1.1aUSB+PS2 adapter.

I have an optical mouse. There can't be any glap stuck on the mouse ball because there isn't a mouse ball.

How can people be this inept? Whether or not it solved your particular problem, installing patches in general shouldn't be a matter to 'consider'. Do it.

And your point is?

... I told you to check your mouse and keyboard cables for glap. Not check your mouseball.

the keyboard freezes and so does the mouse
I got the exact same problem.
well I got an mx510 and a microsoft keyboard and I got the exact same problem. I switched mice to a mircrosoft mouse. Still had the problem. Switched to ibm keyboard and still had the problem. I have had this problem for about a month now. I think im just going to reformat my computer.
Sometime its not a bad thing though. I get a couple freak HS when playing cs and call of duty though. The mouse will just freeze and the fire button even when i release will still keep going. It sprays for about 2-3 seconds but I got a lot of lucky kills that way.

Yeah, I have that problem. If you fix it, please tell me how in the future.
On second thought, I might just return the game. I just got it yesterday.

I have had enough. I hate my keyboard and my mouse...unless something in my computer is causing this...like a bastard gremlin. Anyways...thanks for helping me out guys, but I've decided to return the game. I might get Painkiller instead. Now, I know that people don't really get bothered by this kind of stuff, but my temper was wearing thin. I got pissed and I almost made a mouse shaped crater in my wall. And on the plus side, my mother said that if I get Unreal Tournament 2004, I can't get anymore games for this year. At least now I can get what I really wanted... Prince of Persia 2.

I had my broken (the left side didnt work) joystick plugged in, and i kept trying to take off in flight simulator, but no luck. Im like WHAT THE ****?!?! Ive flown so much before!!!!!

Don't return UT2004, it's probably the best game available at the moment, in terms of replayability. I can play it for hours and hours and I never get sick of it. On the off chance that one day I get bored with it, I can always download one of the thousands of maps, mods, models, texture packs or mutators.

I tried turning my sensitivity down and that help a bit. It happens less often now.
