cause hes a creep! hes a weirdooo! what the hell is he doing here? he doesnt belong here!

Its probably already been done. There is no question in my mind that they will find the hacker, as he surely left some kind of a trace at some point, but, I'm more interested in the following: whether or not Valve will actively being suing and shutting down sites that distribute the code.

uh, Right. Glad you agreed.

Danny5: How on earth do you qualify their 5 years worth of work and research as being deservedly stolen? Steam isn't a 'marketing scheme' you nonce, and is in any case COMPLETELY irrelevant, as it does not affect (see, I know the proper use of 'affect' and 'effect') the argument. This was theft and it can't be justified in any way.

Yeah hl2 will sell like it would anyways, the majority of casual gamers prolly havn't heard of this anyways, doesn't affect em at all, i think the problem here is with the technology aspect, see, ID software (i am guessing) still make huge amounts of money from licensing parts of the q3 engine (moh games, etc...) but the source engines code is out there now it can just be looked at learned from and used freely,...at least as i understand the situation.

they'll find somebody, but not the guy who did it. for how long he has been screwing them i'm shure he knows a tiny bit about IP logging. atleast enough to know to delete the logs.

Huh? Is this really who they think did it, or is it just some guy you hate and want to get in trouble?

Yeah. If by freely, you mean 'illegally.'

from b3d:

The leaker was [GSM]Grim. That is who posted it on Usenet before anyone on IRC even had it. I did some googling and with the help of Derek (TheAmazingXemo) we figured out who this is. Please see: http://www.cracksmokingmonkeys.net/members.php?m=grim for a picture of the person who either 1) hacked valve or 2) was very close to the people who did. I already emailed valve with all of the information I have."

No, its not him, I read on another site that he just shared it on BT but he had nothing to do with hacking it...

This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

That sounds like some pretty nasty stuff.

One thing I hate to think is that Gabe's willingness to communicate with the fans is what led to all this. I mean he was the one who mainly took the questions from the "Info from Valve only" thread and he answered hundreds upon hundreds of questions. His email/computer was also the first to get broken into. I imagine whoever did this knew that he would answer anyone's questions and sent him the virus under the pretense of an honest question or somehow used the info from his email's header to hack into Gabe's comp.

It's quite sick that someone would take advantage of someone who would spend their time to answer so many questions. Not to mention all the people on this board who are now tearing Gabe/Valve down because of the actions of some malicious turd.

quick, lets get together a linch mob and go after somone somebody doesn't like so they started a rumor about him!!!!! |_33T!!!!!1111111

*sigh*

Nice, hope they get him. But the damage is already done, I'm afraid.

EDIT: nvm, guess it's not him. The damage is already done, though.

Sickening

One word: Sickening. No no, not the fact that the source code got leaked. That was inevitable. Sickening is the word I'm using to describe the disgusting ranks of religious Gabe followers. I mean I like Valve, and Gabe to a certain extent but you tards are taking it to a new level. Do you have posters of Gabe up in your room?

um yeah that photo and stuff was up a while ago, apparently he distibuted very early on, but claims he never hacked the pc and stole the source, who knows?

i like how everyone thought it would be cool to have the source and are now NARCing on everyone they hate :)

yea and the glove didnt fit oj.. what does that prove????!!!

We can praise people for hitting a ball, but not someone for creating something such as HL2?

whoa, people here need to grip reality a bit. I realise that this may seem like a massive deal to you (it does to me too) but spurting out stuff like that is just plain funny. The thing is, as important as it may be to you and I, I doubt the FBI have the same passion about a computer games as we do. Sure, I hope the people responsible have whats coming to them but I read some of these posts and cringe...

Actually, software theft is moving up quite quickly on the FBI's priority list.

You need a medal of honor. I agree, they bash his butt cause he wont speak and when he does they wet themselves and his very spoken word. What tools.

the FBI did go after the people who tried to sell the Quake 3 source code on the black-market a few years ago...

You can praise a man for both, that's not what I'm saying. Just keep your cock in your pants.

yeah, and not much turned up after all :/ go fig
they have terrorists to worry about now, not someone stealing game code

It really, really sucks that this happened...

But one question...

Why was a machine with access to the source code connected to the Internet anyway?

*Not very nice people*! burn them i say!!!!

*throws some napalm on the thread*

Let the fanbois perish

Been reading this thread, came upon this, thought it would be a good time to point out that my roommate has a metal spork:

yeah, it's titanium, so it won't rust, but it IS metal...

Are you nuts? I can't keep a chicken cooped up in there.

Gabe, I'm right beside you. I belive my quote speaks for all of us and especially you.

quit with the "i love gabe posts", its quite sad
NEW TOPIC: What are you most looking forward to about HL2 new physics system?

If the game is finished, release it as quickly as possible to a void too many hacks being created.

What else can they do ? rewrite the whole engine again ? The source isn't going away anytime soon no matter if they catch the person that hacked their network.

The game needs to be released today ! Patch it instead of delaying it further.
