hmm, just read all the posts...
while i agree this really sucks, and the guy that 'did' it should be taken in i do feel theres alot of over the top anger going on here.
i also feel that when the spidy sense goes off, and something smells fishy it ussually is.

1st of why was source code placed on a pc that apears to be readly connected to the internet.

2 isn't it great that a former M$ guy gets caugth using outlook with a old arse window pane bug (wasn't it stopped years ago)

3 the timeline seems off. he noticed that the computer was hacked. reformated then the code was stolen?

4 why are all these great pcs there coding on just plugged into the net? in the end the best was to be safe is just like the best way not to get an std or a girl pregenat.. don't be pluged in... sure a condom works 99% of the time, but theres that 1%..

4b if they were so aggressivily being attacked recenetly wouldn't that spark some green ligths in there little pea brains to uplug the source code pc's from the net.

5 This one needs to be answered by Valve, gabe who ever... if this steam program is supposd to activly scan our pc's, take data, upload data etc. all by it self.... how safe will our pc's be?

5b with all the people that get a kick out of tk's wall hack's, cheats in general, and just like pissing people off. what is going to stop them from infecting our pc's now? and will u just hide under the standard license forms that say ur not responsible for anything damages?

i mean really now.. if ur highend pc's get taken over,.. and it takes u time to reliaze this. will 100,000's of players now have zombie pc's? i hope this is the true delay cause of the program...
and the whole steam setup scares me.. buffer underruns all over the place, hackers attacking all hl2 machines.

to those that post that every downloader of the code should be strung be there nuts and buttloved... really now ease up.

99% of the people that are downloading and looking at the code now have no clue what it all means....
the people they should go after are those that know what it means, and have entent to cause harm to valve, or its customers.

the average joe blow downloader, come on now? whats he gonna do brag to his friends geuss what i saw the hl2 source code. wooo hoo big deal

i do hope valve figures this out but
in the end i think that ALL of us, no matter how against this act we are have some doubts.
no one will ever be able to ease them... because there seems to be too many mistakes done along the way to just let it all blow over.
some responsiblity has to lay with valve for doing a poor job securing the code.

also the code now appears to be hitting peer to peer networks.. no offense but call the record industry they already have people spying these and will be able to get some ip addy's

but at the same time it also means hope is dwindling.. some people will just download too look, not know what the hell it is and leave it shared,
do they want to harm valve noo.
but its like watching a car accident u can't help but try to look.

the moment you bought the game, they got royalties. i imagine they could care less about your cd-key.

Everyone know for a fact they couldn't care less about 1 or 10000 customers cd keys. I think the source code this is BS, it most likley a tactic to sell the engine or something. But it makes for good fiction.

To me it sounds like Gabes excuse is crap. A company as big as Valve and no security protection is VERY ignorant. Shame on you Gabe.

BTW who's -WE- "WE can call it baseful and fanciful". WTF? LOL what's that supposed to mean??

check it out.......

http://www.wardriving.com/

I know what wardriving is i have been doing it for about 3 years now.

I was under the assumption that you were joking that wardriving was a possible cause. I mean come on man get real from the information in this thread alone it would invalidate wardriving as the breach.

Now check this out:

Apparently Gabe and other Valve employees knew long before the leak that they were being hacked. So the code tree could is an elaborate and bizzare "honey pot" set up to trick the hacker which explains all the incosistancies and it's crippled nature.

Yeah, it IS odd, it sounds very much like a hoax or the company is REALLY in some deep shit right now and basically panicing.

And the Outlook thing the message mentions, that was years ago, there is no preview pane vulnerability today unless this was a very old unpatched machine.

And, like I said eariler apparently no firewall anywhere ont heir network ? I mean pcanywhere requires a connection IN which I assume they wouldn't have to their development machines.

Is it is true it has nothing to do with Outlook, it's insanely bad security in their whole network and the network guy they have should be shot.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

This worm exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express in an attempt to execute itself when you open or even preview the message. Information and a patch for the vulnerability can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp.

LOL, what a conspiracy theory? You get fkn real man....Why don't you site an "example" next time of WTH your talking about???? Well, ok i'll go read every thread here know it all, save your delicate little fingertips...........

Granted that the patch above doesnt work 100% of the time, not to mention the new object data patch that could be exploited as well.

infosec, damn you! i was just going to post that, lmao. i did a lil' search of my own in my norton a-v 2k3 and found that too :p

o well, u put it in better words than i probably would've anyways

well i've had about enough of this b!tching and moanig about the code. the slacked off and got fuxored in the rear. more power to the hacker for powning them and maybe they'll pull their heads outa their buts and put up some security for once.

peace out biotchs!

weedums, no one's completely sure yet... it's plausible either way, so we'll just have to wait and see.

and chewy, get the f*ck off the boards, we don't want people like you here in the first place.

Well if they new about it before... maybe there changing the code at the moment... because they assumed that after being hacked this was going to happen...

that may have been the cause of the delay...

no ones interested.

i suggest u go back to ur poor english, jeizzon/cleaver

Its gonna be fun when the mod arrives, this entire thing is gonna get censored, banned, edited, deleted

HL2 source theft

Gabe,

I truly feel bad for what's happened. I hate to spin a pointing fingers type thread here, but this illustrates why outlook/outlook express should NOT be used. If you need a good email client use Eudora Pro, period. This is also another example of the hazards of having workstations with public IP addresses.

Gabe, if it was me I'd be on the phone with my attornies right now and preparing to file suit against microsoft for selling defective products and misrepresentation. I don't want to sound glib, but I'm not suprised that this happened.

While it was foolish to use Outlook or any Microsoft security product (this is a company whose official answer to these sorts of problems is something akin to "ah, we'll fix that underlying sloppiness in the next Windows in a few years, and it'll only cost you 130$, isn't that good enough for you whiners?" that certainly doesn't justify in any way the people exploiting it. I wish I had the ability to track down people like this and bring them into justice: they are no different at all than any thief, and should face real hard jail time for what they do. I have absolutely no patience for people that don't respect the property rights of others, or think that their pet theory about intellectual property means they can simply impose this philosophy on other people and steal their stuff. My heart goes out to Valve, seriously. This is a real blow, and I hope this doesn't hurt them any further financially in any way in the end.

why cleaver ? You don´t have counter-strike, day of Defeat, Natural Selection, the specialists ?!

im downloading "the specialists (2.0)" as i'm typing this... i've heard it's supposed to be pretty f**kin sick *crosses fingers*

someone already posted that grimey, but pretty funny s**t :p

seriously, why would gabe write out the whole process of the hack, its too odd, and why would he include little meaningless details, like him stating in the beginning of the letter: "Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve." and "Well, this sucks." those just dont seem to fit into place when talking about something as serious as this is, especially for them, it just seem TOO odd for me

SIDE NOTE: "Well, this sucks." you dont say Well, this sucks if someone steals your code that you've been working on for 5 years, you would most likely not show any kind of emotion in a letter like this. "one of those weeks" oh yeah ONE of those weeks, this is the WORST week valve has ever witnessed if this is true, its not just ONE of those bad weeks, give me a break

i got the specialists last night, its really fun.

Except on the only server I could find, there were two player cheating blatantly. Which was a pain.

Conspiracy theories aside, Gabe is a calm, rational person. I'm sure once he heard news of this happening, he lost his cool, but he's had time to calm down. He didn't address the community immediately, he waited until he calmed down a little bit, I'm sure.

What would you have rather seen, him going off such as "OMG SOEM NEWBEI BROEK INTO TEH NETWERK & STOEL EVERYTHING OMGZ!@~!~!~~~!@!@!~@~!@~!@!!!!!!!!!!!1111oneoneone"? lol

Gabe, You got my support.

OH, AND TO WHOEVER ****ING DID THIS SHIT, YOU ARE GOING TO GET CAUGHT YOU ASS-****, AND YOU ARE GOING TO PAY. YOU LITTLE POS. YOU ARE NOT GONNA GET AWAY WITH THIS. I HOPE YOU BURN IN HELL AND GET TORTURED FOREVER AND EVER, BUT ONLY AFTER I BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE AND MAKE YOU WATCH YOUR CHILDREN BURN. THEN YOU SHOULD BE RAPED UP THE ASS WITH A BROOMSTICK YOU LITTLE ****. DIE, NOW, PLEASE, THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED LOSER ASSES LIKE YOU.

ummmm...get laid...yeah, you need it.

Check kazaa and edonkey

tis it appears to start making its way in some compacity onto the p2p networks.

This blows. I avoided getting into the original game because of all the hacking and shit that was going on and now HL2 might end up being hacked and cheat infested before it even gets an official release.

There is a great pulp fiction quote that is particularly relavent here.
