hmm, just read all the posts...
while i agree this really sucks, and the guy that 'did' it should be taken in i do feel theres alot of over the top anger going on here.
i also feel that when the spidy sense goes off, and something smells fishy it ussually is.
1st of why was source code placed on a pc that apears to be readly connected to the internet.
2 isn't it great that a former M$ guy gets caugth using outlook with a old arse window pane bug (wasn't it stopped years ago)
3 the timeline seems off. he noticed that the computer was hacked. reformated then the code was stolen?
4 why are all these great pcs there coding on just plugged into the net? in the end the best was to be safe is just like the best way not to get an std or a girl pregenat.. don't be pluged in... sure a condom works 99% of the time, but theres that 1%..
4b if they were so aggressivily being attacked recenetly wouldn't that spark some green ligths in there little pea brains to uplug the source code pc's from the net.
5 This one needs to be answered by Valve, gabe who ever... if this steam program is supposd to activly scan our pc's, take data, upload data etc. all by it self.... how safe will our pc's be?
5b with all the people that get a kick out of tk's wall hack's, cheats in general, and just like pissing people off. what is going to stop them from infecting our pc's now? and will u just hide under the standard license forms that say ur not responsible for anything damages?
i mean really now.. if ur highend pc's get taken over,.. and it takes u time to reliaze this. will 100,000's of players now have zombie pc's? i hope this is the true delay cause of the program...
and the whole steam setup scares me.. buffer underruns all over the place, hackers attacking all hl2 machines.
to those that post that every downloader of the code should be strung be there nuts and buttloved... really now ease up.
99% of the people that are downloading and looking at the code now have no clue what it all means....
the people they should go after are those that know what it means, and have entent to cause harm to valve, or its customers.
the average joe blow downloader, come on now? whats he gonna do brag to his friends geuss what i saw the hl2 source code. wooo hoo big deal
i do hope valve figures this out but
in the end i think that ALL of us, no matter how against this act we are have some doubts.
no one will ever be able to ease them... because there seems to be too many mistakes done along the way to just let it all blow over.
some responsiblity has to lay with valve for doing a poor job securing the code.
also the code now appears to be hitting peer to peer networks.. no offense but call the record industry they already have people spying these and will be able to get some ip addy's
but at the same time it also means hope is dwindling.. some people will just download too look, not know what the hell it is and leave it shared,
do they want to harm valve noo.
but its like watching a car accident u can't help but try to look.
