From Shacknews:

id Software and Activision today announced Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, a new strategic shooter by Splash Damage (Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory). The game pits the armies of Earth vs invading Strogg forces. Quake Wars promises strategic gameplay, persistent character promotions, day and night-time battles, and vehicle support. It's also mentioned that Quake Wars is powered by id Software's new MegaTexture rendering technology.

As the invasion begins, players choose to battle as one of five unique classes in either the EDF (Earth Defense Force -- humans) or the barbaric alien Strogg armies, each augmented with specialist weapons and combat hardware. Troops utilize over 40 conventional and futuristic vehicles, deployable structures, and defense systems like quad-bikes, tanks, and alien walkers for epic ground assaults; or helicopters and anti-gravity ships to lend firepower from the air. Throughout each battle, teams establish bases, deploy defense structures, artillery, radar, and advanced forward-command systems into enemy territory while constructing and demolishing obstacles to speed progress and gain a tactical advantage over the enemy.

This game will essentially be the "prequel" to Quake II.

That shall be interesting, I can't wait to get my hands on that and Q4 :)

looks spifftastic, yet horribly cliche, but as long as its fun, its fun... I just wish this year we would see something original.

This looks great, man I need to get a new PC after the 360.

Wow, can't wait, any news on a release date. It is sounding like Battlefield 2 meets Quake 2 meets Command and Conquer?

Oh well.

Man, this is beautiful.............2005 roks

NOOOOOOO!!!!! my beloved enemy territory!!! desecrated! ww2 class goodness warped into this hollow BF2 clone!!! aghhh!!!

...maybe someone will make a ww2 mod for it :E

It had better not be starwars battlefront all over again!

If they do it properly, without looking too much (or anything at all) at the battlefield franchise, this could be incredibly good.

If the strogg and humans are suitably different it could be a contender to the t4oag*.

My first impression of Quake 4 was... well, in one word: disgust. It didn't look like it was part of the Quake world. It was almost exactly like Doom 3... and the part with that mech running outside was hideous.

The one screenshot I've seen of this looks much more like a Quake game than anything I've seen of Quake 4, IMO. Also, that "megatexture" technology sounds perfect for a game like this. They will be able to have tons of open (and not poorly lit) terrain without having it covered in nasty tiling textures. It definately looks good. I just hope the gameplay isn't botched... or an exact replica of Battlefield gameplay set in a Quake world.

I hope this will be free like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Unlikely, but it would kick much ass...

I bet your game will be 10 times better. :D

Now, if only we can convince my publisher...

Chin up mate :), that is probably what Dice thought when some idiots brought out Operation Flashpoint :).

Just make your game better/different, in the respect that it is more realistic, or more arcadish or something.

I've spent the past 2 days going over and over our design, removing or replacing huge chunks in order to avoid being like this. From the looks of that video, they're going for a really heavyily action-orientated approach. We're aiming for more of a tactical approach.
Oh, and our vehicles are better :)
So, things aren't as bad as they seemed. Unfortunately, we lose the "first to market" bonus, but we'll get over it.

General question regarding the Quake trilogy: Are the games related at all? How do the Strogg relate to the first game? Why did you never actually get to fight Quake in the games? Is there any connectivity at all? Or did id just slap a big "Q" on the box for hell of it when it came to the "sequels"?

I don't know if the strogg in anyway relates to the first quake, but I could be wrong.I remember reading something about how quake 2 kinda back tracks to quake 1 in terms of the storyline.Quake 3's storyline kinda does the same and relates to q1 and q2, but yet is not really "connected" to ether.

I'm probally wrong tho...so yes they did pretty much slap a big "Q" on the box for marketing.

Quake 4 has a serious lack of chunky gibs and orange colours, how could you call it a Quake game without that?

It just seems like a heavily enhanced version of Battlezone?

Not even that - I didn't see any evidence of base-building in that video, although they may have it. We certainly do.

Does your game have a melee combat system? Ala' Riddick or Condemned? That would totally ****ing rock if you could implement that too.

Please god no.

Because it sucks and also whats the point?

Before you can do any melee type stuff they might already have your ass blown to hell and back from a rifle or some gun.

Yeah true, but i hate games where you can't smack somebody with the butt of your rifle. Just sucks when you're out of ammo and have to switch to a knife. Too much time, not enough smacking.

Besides, fist-fighting someone in first-person is infinitely cooler then whacking with a crowbar.
