Following up our earlier newspost by Evo, we have received confirmation that id Software has teamed with Valve to bring some of the most successful game franchises in history to Steam. Starting today, Steam users may download full versions of these best-selling and critically-acclaimed games, including the complete DOOM series and QUAKE I - III, including mission packs, as well as id's pioneering PC side-scroller, Commander Keen and vintage favorites Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Heretic, and HeXen. As part of the id Welcome Celebration on Steam, select id packages are being offered with a 10 percent, limited-time discount. Gabe mentioned...
We can't overstate our admiration for id, its games, and the technical advancements the company has delivered to help move the industry forward during the past 15 years," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. Like many other studios, Valve was born when we licensed the QUAKE engine to build our first game. We're proud to welcome id to Steam and give people around the world an easy way to play the games that have inspired everyone here at Valve.
So the game line up released today on Steam, see below:
  • Commander Keen, Episodes 1 through 5

How does the online stuff work? Will a Steam Quake2 client be able to connect to the same servers as a non-Steam Quake2 client? I still play Q2DM from time to time, and the community is quite small. This could make it even smaller. :|

I doubt it. I'm sure they will still use their own default clients to launch.

I just bought the Hexen/Heretic combo for 10 bucks...might think about the quake ones.

I just got Doom for free online. It's all abandonware but for some reason they are selling it for $10 a game. :|

I never expected to see id games on Steam, especially considering the people within the company (mainly John Carmack) have been openly critical of Steam since the beginning.

When you can sell a game as old as Doom for 5-10 bucks...you'll do whatever it takes :O

Considering id is still around, I'd hesitate to call it abandonware.

Also, COMMANDER KEEN WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeee.

Wow blast from the past for most of those.

Im glad to see more and more companies using steam :)

What you downloaded for free was the first Episode of Doom, its a Demo. There are 4 episodes in doom 1. I think 20 missions each.

Troof.

It's OK to buy these games again. You are giving some money to Valve! Can't complaint here :D

That's awesome!

I actually don't see DOOM on there. Just the expansion packs. ;)

Finally I can play Keen again...

Without having to be a pirate, or searching for years to find it!

It's called Ultimate Doom now, because it includes a 4th episode. And it's not abandonware, I even saw it for sale not too long ago in ebgames (in a collectors pack)

This is probably one of the best moves Valve ever made with steam..even though I already own most of these games so I won't buy them again.

edit- Just noticed..no quake 4? I already have it but still..

I'm getting Commander Keen by not even asking, my mom loves the series lol.

Wow, yo have to pay for old games like Doom and Quake?!

They are free to download(legal)on the net and are open-source now.

The source code doesn't include the actual game, just the code to modify it. If these games were freeware, then id wouldn't be selling them on their website.

It's not abaondonware as far as I'm aware although I think many people have the misconception it is.

Also as pointed above, yes the Doom, Quake and Quake 2 ENGINES are open source but that doesnt mean the games are free. The tools and code to make a new game based on these engines are free so you could go and make a completly new game out of the tools and have the source to look at but the source itself doesnt include the assets (ie maps, models sounds ect) from quake under that agreement. So no, you cant legally download those titles for free, just the source code to the engine.

This man speaks the troof.

One of the best deals valve have ever made IMO.

Do you think we could get quake wars on steam now?

$tEAm
we're going to eat your soul

Valve have come up with a successful games delivery system, and other developers/publishers want to make use of it (no ones forcing them to). The prices generally aren't excessive, so what's your point?

Boo Hoo Hoo teh evil corporations making moneh!!?

Oh no, we can't have that they might put the money into making even better games....

I didnt read the whole news article, nor the thread, but can we put our exsisting cd key code for Doom3 onto Steam? Or was there no CD code?

Thanks

Ps: PM me the answer so I can see it quicker :)

Could it be possible for any plans to release enemy territory wolfenstein or quake wars on steam?

Isn't Enemy Territory Wolfenstein a free mod?

I simply will have to buy it.

WIN!

:D

Remember - I told you all about this first...you all owe me

;)

Just jokin with ya!

Great news!

Not spending a penny on this until the DosBox situation is explained/resolved. I was massively excited and I did cream myself severa times, but until the fishiness is fumigated, just no.

Commander Keen... better resolve that Dosbox thing quickly, I love those old games.

Quake III Arena - $17.95
Quake III Team Arena - $17.95
Quake III Arena + Team Arena - $17.95

:dozey:

:hmph:

But you can get all of the games for $62 at the moment which is....30 quid :D

COMMANDER FREAKIN' KEEN!

My mum will totally get Steam now, between this and Eets..

Damn tax!

D:

Anyway, not currently downloading MTW2, all the id stuff from Steam and the ETQW Beta 2 from FP....so much downloading!
