and had a AGP slot on my mobo, would a GeForce4 Ti 4200 be a good choice?

yea, thats a very solid choice. I have one now and it plays everygame out at 50 or above fps. Make sure you get the 128mb one though.

ok, cause i'm thinking about upgrading my mobo. and it's a inexpensive and (now I know) good choice. but my dad would NEVER let me open up my 2 year old computer w/o him being to feet away from me (i do it all the time :p), let alone take out the mobo and but a new one in. any suggestions on how to get him to let me? i have ample money, but he needs sum... "persuasion".... suggestions?

well you cant either

A. Kill Him
B. Do it when he is out
C. Knock him out
D. give him money

ether.

i could do option B, but what if he wants to open it up? and he wants to take it sum where and sees extra ports in the back of the computer.... that's the olny problem... if he wants to "check up" on my computer. any ideas there? .... i could say "dad, that was always there".... but he knows the specs and if he sees a Athlon XP 2400+ and not a P3.... he'd kill me

Tell him to get real....tell him that you must get new aweseom parts. Tell him that you ordered from a reliable company. Tell him its top quality parts. tell him anything...but dont use the word money or new.

"hi".... "no dad, i don't want any money from you, i just want permission for sumthing" ..... "no dad, not to get a tatoo" .... "it's for upgrading the computer" .... "are u kidding? P3 processors at 1 ghz arent even made anymore" .... "no, it's not expensive" .... "www.newegg.com is VERY reliable dad" .... "no, it's my money" ..... "yes i'm sure" .... "no? why no?" .... "i dont care that u said so" .... ::gunfire::
and that's how that conversation would go. my mom is all for this, it's just my dad... oh well, if i can get the money up front, he might do it, cause it's inexpensive. $300 for a Asus board that fits and is compatible w/ everything in my current case except for the processor and RAM, AMD athlon XP 2400+, 256 MB of RAM, and a GeForce4 TI 4200 128 MB video card. thats not unreasonable at all! who agrees?

If its your money...........and if i were your dad.....id let you do it.

But my parents always let me spend my monye however i wanted to.

Unless they thought i was doing something stupid.

Just let your dad know that you have researched this alot and are fully aware of what your doing.

THAT, my friend.... just might work.... but i'll be making a topic to show to my dad w/ a poll, and i'd appreciate it if you would post on it. it'll be called "Help a gamer out..." and it will be on this forum

BRILLIANT!!!!! SHEER AND UTTER BRILLIANCE!!!!!! I LOVE U! ... but how do i do it so that nuthing else it fried?

BTW, I'm not going to do that topic thing until i ask my father and he says no, then i'll make that topic

if i were you, i'd go for a Dx9 card instead, even though it's a solid card, what's the point in getting a last generation card when it's time has already passed?

my friend has a 9500 non pro and he is VERY happy with it, you can get them for about 120 bucks.

no... i can get a 9500 Pro for $205 (cheapest i found them), i can get a Ti4200 for $120. besides, i can always upgrade in a year or 2 if i have an AGP slot.

EDIT: oh, non-Pro? i didnt check those, srry

EDIT 2: they don't work with nForce 2 chipsets, which (if i do upgrade the mobo) it will be one of those

man my dad is the same, ive got a dell, he wont even let me open up the case. Im gonna buy a radeon 9800 pro soon, so im going to have to perform a quick and silent strike on my computer. when my dad falls asleep on the couch i will unhook my computer, making sure the monitor blocks the view he would have of the tower, take it up to my room, quickly replace the cards, and take it downstairs, and he will be none the wiser.

of course what i just typed is bullshit, cause i dont know jack shit about hardware, ill end up going to future shop :p

i installed sum extra RAM recently and i havent told him yet. unfortunatly, his friend did do, but didnt know how, so we had to open up my computer to "test" the RAM. so, he's like "open the case", i'm "go get the vacum, it's dirty in there" he's "... ok..." he goes upstairs, i open that bitch as fast as i could pulled the ram out, and hid it under the monitor. he comes back down, we vacum it, try the RAM i already knew wasnt going to work in our (or his friends) computer, he went out side, put the RAM back in, and was playing in no time. but if that situation ever came up again, it'll take a little more time to swap mother boards...
BTW, has anybody noticed that only the fathers care if we mod the computers, and not the moms?

uhm, a 9500 non-pro WILL work with an nforce2 chipset. so will almost any other agp card unless its very old.

everyone with a nForce 2 chipset mobo that bought one said that it doesnt work, and when it does, it's "artifact-o-rama" check for urself:
www.newegg.com
find it on there and check the reviews

ya, saying "BUY NVIDIA NOT ATI, ATI SUCKS!!!!" but they had tp cheat on benchmarks to establish this false fact

well those people are morons then, goto hardforum.com and see how many people own nforce 2 chipset as well as a 9500 non pro.

you know im willing to bet the reason for their artifacts is because they're trying to overclock it to be a 9700 pro (some of the early 9500's had the same PCB and memory layout so you could flash the bios and overclock it and it would basically be a 9700 pro, actually it might have just been 9700 not 9700 pro, but either way, lots of people who did that complained of artifacts and stuff, gee i wonder why? heh)

[edit]

looks like the problems are related to the asus a7n8x deluxe, and i wouldn't recommend that nforce2 board anyways, i'd recommend the abit nf7-s :)

and there wern't THAT many complaints about it, and also the problem was with the black version, whereas people said the red version was ok. *shrug* the card itself will work with the nforce2 chipset.

possibly, cause that was the thing for 9500 non-pro users, they'd softmod it to 9700, the OC it to 9700 pro

the Abit NF7-S IS an Nforce2 board

yes, im well aware, and its a better nforce2 mobo than the asus a7n8x deluxe, which is why i would recommend it over the asus, also i didnt see any users reporting errors with the abit, understand?

notice i said "i dont recommend THAT nforce2 board" not "i dont recommend A nforce2 board" ;) isn't the english language great?
