first of all, forgive me if this has been discussed. i cant look at every thread reply

HL2's audio and among other stuff will get preloaded today. the GCF cache files are VERY easy to look in, and extract files from. every single line of the story, every single enemy sound (with the enemy's name in the file name), and every single weapon sound will be available for easy extraction

dont you think this is a VERY dumb move on Valve's part? things are only going to get much worse tomorrow and every day after... until release

if u think its so bad, then just dont open them duuuuuuuuuuuuuuh :/

:rolling:

you dont think valve knows how to encrypt things properly?

it will be far from "easy"... time consuming to say the least....

Who cares if somebody wants to go through and look at all of the textures and sound files? If they want to spoil it, it's their choice :p

im not worried about me, im worried about all the other crazies out there
and im also worried about all the negative press. outside the HL community, Valve is the current laughing stock of all internet forums.
people that are bound to extract sound files from tomorrows sound preload, just as they extracted the script, thus making Valve look all the worse

there is a program that makes GCF viewing as easy as browsing your hard drive with windows explorer. it is widely available and hosted on legit Half-Life websites
with that program, there is no such thing as encryption

I wonder if "Half-Life 2: Coming Soon" will come up on the my games window and letcha preload it? :-D

it will probably only preload if you purchase it over steam. i dont think Valve has said how it will work. everyone is just assuming they will be able to preload it

Nobody cares! If somebody wants to open up their GCF file and distribute it's contents, so what? It's very easy to avoid reading about it, just as it was very easy to avoid downloading the leaked beta last year.

If you don't want to find out the information, then don't go looking for it. You can pretty much guarantee nothing will appear on HL2 fansites such as this on the front pages. There's little people can do about the forums, but if they're well moderated, then information which constitutes as 'spoliers' can be removed by mods.

It really is no big deal, and I don't understand why people are getting worked up about it.

Everyone could preload CZ, so why not hl2?
you mean CS:S, after buying CZ
no one has bought HL2 yet. is Valve going to assume that every single Steam user will buy HL2 and preload the sounds, etc to everyone?

I thought it was only being pre-loaded to ATi voucher holders to start with?

No, I really meant CZ. I didn't have the game, and still was preloading it. oh wait, maybe because I have a coupon? nah, the coupon hasn't got anything to do with CZ, does it?

Er, I thought they were going to be ENCRYPTED, like the original HL2 movies where.

It took (and forgive me, I can't remember his name right now but he's great, I think he's a mod here) a while to crack one open and view. And Valve thanked him because it helps them create better security with the flaws he uncovered. I think Half Life 2 will have some of the most major encryption stuff yet, doubt anyone will get into it.

all that happened before this program came out. to give you an example, i can see every single file in the CS:S cache

That doesn't mean that that program will be able to read HL2 content.

I think Valve would probably have heard of this program and tested it themselves first to make sure that it didn't work, wouldn't you?

The CS:S beta isn't really that major a thing, since it only has some of the data for an online-only game that is pretty much just an updated version of the old one. Whereas the HL2 data being sent out is brand new stuff for a game that has been (mostly) shrouded in secrecy - to assume that it will work on HL2 just because it worked on CS:S is pretty naive.

Just wondering (I'm not gonna spoil any HL2 stuff) anyone have a link to a GCF browser program?

This is what i'm worried about as well. This only means more bad press for HL2 and Valve and a greater possibility of HL2 being compleletly spoiled for me

Yes there is a program that opens GCF files, however, the HL2 preload will not come as a GCF file. It will come as some sort of encrypted file that is unlocked when valve distributes the rest of it. GCFscape can't open it.

Seriously - just because you can find out the plot and look at the textures doesn't mean the game's story will not be a surprise for you at all. I knew Bruce Willis was a ghost in the sixth sense before even watching the film (my friend spoiled it for me), yet I watched it none the less - and seeing the story with visuals, atmosphere and emotions was 10 times more entertaining and surprising - even when I found out the ending from before.

Although yeah, I personally think valve should at the very least encrypt or do some crap to make it impossible for us to view and avoid spoilers.

Bah.. people just need to stop being flaming momos and looking for ways to drag it down in my opinion. Encryption would help, but there will always be some sucklechimp that needs to ruin something just to prove he can.

What's the big deal about seeing the files. The day the game is released we'll have all the files, packed neatly onto discs for us - it's not that important. If some people want to ruin the storyline for themselfs, what's so different from them doing it now as opposed to release day?

Most of us fear that random dickheads will come here to post a thread title that gives away a major plot twist or even the ending of the game. Just to see our reactions and for their enjoyment

We don't really care if they spoil it for themselves. We're more worried about some smacktard popping in and spoiling it for us, hehe.

Yeah? - and who's to say that won't happen while you are half way through the game just after it came out?

FFS, if you don't want it spoiled, don't look.

I'm not gonna go looking. i'm just saying that there is a possibility of someone coming here and being a dickhead and posting a thread title with a major spoiler in it. I've seen it happen with other games. It can happen

We've already had this once today man. It takes you all of about .1 seconds to read a line. If that line is: "Alyx dies in the Citadel" then yer hosed. You've already read it. It's not like you can just magically skip over any spoiler, hehe.

So the issue here isn't the 'leak', it's people posting spoilers?

sucklechimp, aha, i havent heard that one before.

Actually someone did that here earlier tonight apparently. A few people read it before the thread was deleted.

Ahh yes, that's one of my favorites, hehe. That and B*tchapotamaus.

I saw it happen over at the Far Cry forum about 5 times in one day

So why are you here? Don't visit.

Hard to tell who that was asking Dagobert. As for myself, I don't really mind that much, but it is an issue for a lot of people here, and I can understand their concerns. It's also a bit like telling someone to leave their country if they don't like crime. I'm not leaving. I just want people to see what everyone is concerned about.

Aw, crap! He's a ghost?!
