I stop by here to see what everyone is saying/thinking about the whole leak. I see everyone putting in thier two cents, so I thought I would put mine in.
I want to start by saying I have NO sympathy for Valve at all. They knew/know damn well how anticipated this game is and they strung around you and me for months on a release date, and we still do not have one. Valve, you do not bite the hand that feeds you. The RIAA is doing this and I can promise you thier days on earth are limited. Now, am I saying I will not buy the game once it comes out? No, not at all, infact I've had my copy pre-paid at EB for about seven months now. I certainly hope Valve learned from thier mistake and give us a ROCK SOLID release date today, otherwise you know the pre-gold will get leaked. I hope you guys do not make the same mistake again.

If I am not mistaken, and I could be, They stole the source code sometime between 9/11 and the day they had The Rock pressconference. I believe that the source code did not leak until they announced the game would be out for a "Holiday Release". I know the full beta just got out, what, a few days ago? And now the pre-gold, a patch for the beta, is supposed to get leaked today if they do not come and give us a rock solid release date.

Valve have been making HL2 for 5 years, not 5 minutes - that's at least twice as long as most FPS games, and in case you hadn't realised, they still haven't released it...the community frustration is entirely justified IMHO.

Another very valid reason I have no sympathy for Valve about the leak is for a very simple reason. They could have prevented it. How, you ask, could they prevent it? I can promise you you that had they given us a playable demo of the game along with a solid release date, the hacker would not have leaked the game.

You honestly think that is it? This has 12 yr old attention whore written all over it. I cant believe anyone would honestly believe that releasing a demo would have stopped this. The "kid", IMHO, does not care about the release and the dates, he wants to be the big kid and feel proud of himself. Valve was dumb though. When you have a product this big, you dont let crap like that happen. You take sercurity precautions. But it still does not make it right for someone to do this. And what is worse, is the fact that if he/she is found out, they will be a celebrity. :flame:

As a company releasing an unaltered client/demo when an operative version of your source code is out into the open would be tantamount to putting a gun to your head professionally. It would also compromise any form of legal investigation as well as negate any form of insurance payouts your company might hold regarding theft, destruction of property etc, etc. Youy think the guys at valve live on fresh air or something? That their offices are rent free? All the time they aren't making money is costing them money, that is how the real world works.

I hate to break it to you but this hacking stuff isn't some sort of kindergarden playground dispute, where if you hand over the sweets you stole everyone kisses and makes up. It's about a group of people who have poured their time, money and creativity into a project for the best part of 5 years being robbed, and having all their hard work, ingenuity and efforts disseminated across the globe for all to see, by people with no real regard or respect for what they are trying to achieve. Get a grip on reality.

I just dont understand the thought process of some people. This game has no bearing on your life what so ever, yet people spout off like it is "owed" to them. I cant wait till some of you jerks grow up, realize that NOTHING except for taxes and death are guaranteed in life. So what if you upgraded your PC, so what if you took time off work, so what if it was delayed for what ever reason. This all reminds me of the shock, horror, boo-hoo when 3dfx closed down. Everyone was about to commit hari kiri over it. But lo and behold no one gives a flying poo now and haven't done for a good while.
