Questions? @#$% your questions, try it.

P.S. Seems it has FTP too, but I haven't played with that yet.

So basically what Vista and Seven do out of the box? (and presumably any other self respecting OS)

Can you state then which features it has that a normal OS does not?

I come into this thread expecting something involving peaches, and this is what I get.

I am truly peachless now.

I downloaded and installed the program, and I will probably use it.

Better than those smartasses.

Surely you can't be serious.
If you like windows search, that's fine. I find it hair tearingly slow, can't find what I'm looking for, the search has to be verbatim - for example, if you're looking for "bad moon rising.mp3", if you type "bad rising", it won't find it - and I hear it eats up resources - many people disable it on that reason alone.

Everything.exe is blazing fast since it simply reads the MFT file table of the hard drives. You could type "bad mp3" and it will find that song.

Everything can be set to index at all times, or to not even index unless you are looking for something. Generally it takes a few seconds to update the index (in my case, several terrabytes of data) if you haven't launched it (and thereby updating it) in a few days.

I tend to remember keywords of filenames of things I'm looking for (like the example above "bad moon rising"),(and not sentences within text documents), so it's perfect for me.

The only drawback for me then, is that it doesn't index encrypted files. Windows search indexes encrypted files, but only if you encrypt it with Windows Encryption (which I don't)

So is Win7 search, doing everything you have mentioned.
The other thing is that: As soon as you install, save, delete a file/folder/software, it is also synced, automatically deleted/saved in Win Index system, saving periodical scans, which annoy, and need resource and disk-time. In Win7 search, it does not need days, or periodical indexing, rather, when you install OS, thereon, it will keep up with your filings in real time manner, indexing drives with almost no recourse.
You are the first, and the very few, who actually complain about Windows 7 search system, everyone else bows. If you don't like it because it consumes too much resource, I think you are having resource issues to start with. I play games almost whenever no one is looking, and I haven't had any performance issue with win7 Search, matter of fact, I have never (Yes, I said never) notice it.
There was a time when I was using XP and installed Microsoft desktop search (Something like that) and I couldn't stand it because as soon as I take my hand off the mouse it kicks in. Not the case at this time.
What I like the most about Win7 Search is that: if I type something like "Good" that word will be searched as a keyword. Once I get the result, if I'm not sure about the file, (Like say it is a song, and I'm not sure about who sang it, the name, Etc) I'd click “See more results” the entire findings, with Icons, the word “Good” highlighted, with every detail possible, which could remind you and refresh your memory, is then shown in regular window.
So, I pretty much happy with it.

Take Care.

Yeah, it's true I haven't had my system fully established yet. My install is relatively new.

However, I was annoyed when looking for files of software I had installed hours earlier had not been indexed. (wanted to muck with the config.ini of Bioshock, for one example, but really it couldn't seem to find anything I ever looked for) It would take .001 seconds for Everything.exe to have already indexed it as soon as the installer put it there.

I'm giving it a chance (because I like the built in-ness of it all), I merely was giving my first impression.

yeah man, give it a chance.
I have absolutely no reason to look for a substitute. Win7 search does what it supposed to do, and always finds my lost/misplaced stuff. And I can't get rid of something, then try out something else, just because I feel like it; I have to have a reason.

Good Luck.

Try "Everything" it will take you less than a minute to download, install, and test, and won't cost you a cent. Yes, Win7 indexed search is not bad, I haven't been living in a cave, but (if you're too lazy to try it)...

Comparison: Searched for *.avi

Win 7 Indexed Results:
  • 745 AVI files
  • 849 Total Results including things like “whidata0.xml” and folders like “aviproxy” (I assume it searched inside the files)
  • Benchmark: 8 seconds (sometimes it's semi-instant, but I frequently see it lagging like that).

Everything Results:
  • 759 AVI Files
  • 759 Total Results
  • Benchmark: “Instant” (less than 1/8 second? It updated as fast as the key is pressed.)

Windows 7 completely missed 14 AVI files, you'd think "they're in system folders" but that's not true. I first noticed this because.... I installed Everything on my laptop, but not yet on my PC. When I got home, I turned off/on win7 indexing (took nearly 2 minutes to index my harddrives) & was searching for some missing maps (images) for a 3D scene. “Tree04-5.pg” wasn’t showing up. Installed “Everything,” indexed all my HDs in about 8 seconds, and then I searched and found 4 results.

P.S. I am peachless, but just bought some Kiwi fruit & fresh Pineapple. Software was recommended to me by a friend who has a PHD in math, but do you have anything else like this VirusType2?

Nah, I tried several desktop search programs. X1, yahoo! (both discontinued) Copernic search, and Everything. Never tried Google desktop.

I didn't mean specifically other search programs, but I also tried Google Desktop recently, but the search doesn't seem to do what I want it to. The other features can be moderately handy though.

Here's another sweet thing I found today.

Create a new folder (anywhere) called....
_____.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
(replacing ___ with anything). It will create a sort-of "super-control panel" in windows 7... it's rather useful, rather than hunting for "where the hell do I change that setting." Try it, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Again, use Windows Search for that :p

Want to find where to change file type associations? Open your start menu and type in 'file ty', want to delete IE cookies? Type in 'cookies'. That 'godmenu' is totally redundant when you learn to use the start menu. Well, there's actually not much to learn, just type in whatever you want.

'Everything' is too limited compared to what Windows Search is capable of, honestly. It's so fast because it only indexes file names and folders. Windows Search indexes plain text and file meta data as well, and could potentially index everything as long as the supplier of the file type uses the API of Windows Search. The only thing that Everything does that I'm not sure Windows Search does is regex search, which isn't all that useful since Everything doesn't index text files.

Another cool thing that I learned about today: Windows Search can use natural language in its search queries. Try searching for 'document created today', or 'pictures taken before last year'. In fact, that godmenu folder showed up as a document I created today :D

It's disabled by default though, don't know why, but turn it on by going Folder Options > Search > 'Use natural language search'.

Lets try to not make this an only A or only B thread & keep those kinds of discussions for politics and religion (topics I have no interest in). It's like me saying "I personally never search for files containing text"... that's not really relevant. Try it; if you like it, cool, if not, cool.... because honestly you'll waste more time reading my posts than it would take you to try out Everything search.

Win7 search has a few nice features, such as finding control-panel features, and indexed text-feild search. Didn't know about the "natural language search" but it seems to handle a variety of queries well,

Everything Search is (IMO, for reasons listed above), is better for finding file with specific names.... something I search for very frequently.

anyone notice he spelled speeches wrong? there's actually 2 e's and no a...it's probably a common mistake but i just wanted the community to know that i know how to spell it correctly. i'd also like to add that this comment is not intended to educate the OP but merely show off my self perceived intelligence.

and now to insult the op for no apparent reason:

Hey Tyguy I already pointed out the misspelling in a more cute and sexy way.

Then again my avatar helps with that factor a lot.

i can't tell if your avatar is circling it's hips or thrusting forward and back...maybe if i stare at it for a really long time.

Now you're coming off like a salesman than a someone who stumbled on peaches.
I like W7 Search and it finds what I lost. I don't give something else a try while I'm happy with what I have. It's like throwing a sweet peach, climbing up the tree and trying out another peach. But I'm not going to insult you. And that's all I'll have to say about that.

Turns out this isn't true. But damn, my hard drive has been indexing for several hours and it's bugging the loving **** out of me.

Gives me an idea. I'm going to get some of that acoustic sound deadener, and line the inside of my case

I just read that as "and line the inside of my ass" and I was like, what in the **** is he talking about?
