I want to get internet security but im not sure which 1's are better. i heard mcafee is better than norton, and panda better than both. what do u recomend?

The way I see it os: if your prone to attacks from the web via your high speed net connection, get a router with a hardware firewall preferably running a small linux distro.

if its the best anti-virus how come shops dont sell it?

Bah Just download AVG antivirus free edtion and all your problems are solved.

Shops do sell it. It's not because you haven't seen it at futureshop that the program isn't good. I've never seen 3dsMax at futureshop and I think it's a pretty decent modeling package lol.

Nod32 is one of the most awarded Antivirus software by the mags, reviews and web sites.

AVG Free Edition for the virus scanner and Zone Alarm or Sygate for the firewall will both work. And they're free.

i know its free but i dont think its as effective as mcafee or anything like that

Just get some virus scanner (F-Prot works VERY well, But you have to pay, or dont if you get my drift)
and then install Firefox, And your problems are solved.

Someone posted an article some time ago about how AVG was absolute crap.

I remember that thread, I think he was talking about one of the old versions though. And yeah it probably won't be as effective as something you pay for obviously, but it works pretty well for me at least.

its just that i want good security for a good computer. would you say panda internet security is good? otherwise i'll just get that

I recently tried Panda Internet Security 2005 or what ever its called, and it caused my pc to take along time (like 5 mins) to start up, and when it finally did start up, it messed up my visual theme and caused general slowness. And another thing, is that you can't set it to ask you what to do when it comes across a virus. It doesn't like flashget and it uninstalled it automatically. So now I'm using Mcafee Virusscan with no firewall which I don't like. Just letting you know how I got on with panda..

ok im getting nod32, what firewall goes well with it?

mcaffee enterprise corporate edition, it is good, when u get your updated dats its all fine and dandy but sometimes virus' slightly change and get upgraded thusly becoming not so readily detectable, enterprise comapres the diff codes and then realises it is the same verus jsut newer and tell you :p plus its new:)

for firewall im not sure, i use ISA server from microsoft but i doubt u can afford that:p mcaffee have an ok fireall but the pop ups u get fmro liek do uw ant to allow this and that and this does annoy ppl :p

ZoneAlarm is best for the software Firewall. As for AV, I perfer NOD32. I let it do once-a-day scans while I'm playing BF2 or WoW and it doesn't make me lag. I know ppl who play WoW and timeout when their AV scan kicks in because it's so resource heavy.

Have you bought this stuff yet? If you havent, PM me and I'll sort you out with teh software if you know what I mean. But it is upto you..

Wait, you mean you can actually buy those programs?! How much did it cost?

I should read the Hardware forums more often. AVG free edtion offers the same protection as the pro version (I currently run the pro version) minus a few features. You're still getting a top notch virus scanner.

AVG Free
Zone Alarm
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware

Those programs keep my computer virus/spyware-free and don't cost me anything. If you want to pay for your software that's fine, but be aware that the freeware alternatives can be just as good, if not better. :p

i have a problem, i try to play moh on the internet and the game will crash.what settings do i need on the firewall (zonealarm) so i can play?

You need to untick the "crash MoH" checkbox in the options.
Seriously that's wierd that you get a crash, the worse i would expect is that you wont be able to play online because it would block the packets but anyway, if i remember correctly, there is an option that lets ZoneAlarm scan the programs on your comp that use the net and configure them automatically, or maybe i'm confusing with Norton. Im also pretty sure there is an option that when zone alarm sees that a program is trying to access the net, it will ask you what to do.
