I work at a fred meyer's (Hardware & Automotive department) and its really easy, I just make sure everything looks good & help customers with mixing paint, making keys or help them find something. But ive been a cashier for a few years at a gas station and that sucked, but I was a alcoholic back then so that made up for it, most days I came in hung over so bad & still drunk.
ha ha i work at fred meyer too. for 2 years i was a courtesy clerk pushing carts and returning shit. when i turned 18, like 2 weeks ago, i became a cashier. as for my slow speed, well i havent been doing it a long enough t ime. the beeps will only multiply... stil the 14-17 items an hour im at is pretty good, and im in the top 10 on the speed chart each week. ill be at 20+ once i memorize all the damn produce codes.

Yeah, the produce codes will speed things along. I tend to linger around 24 ipm. I'm generally 5th or so on the list, but we have 156 cashiers, so I suppose it's not bad.

Red Peppers 4088, Bananas 4011, Green Apples 4017, Organic Scallions 94067, Cucumbers 4062, ENGLISH Cucumbers 4593, Navel Oranges 4012, AHHHH haha, it get's annoying doesn't it?

Memory is for suckers, we have BAR-CODES! *dramatic music*

I used to be a store room monkey years back in Tesco. They made me work check outs once.

It was indeed horrible. "Cashback sir? [/me wants to kick guy in face]"

yeah we can go to the bathroom.. we have to shut down though, so only when it slows down.

the worst is all the different kind of apples... 4020, 4017, 4131, 4133, etc.

green beans! 4066!

Hahaha, LIMES 4048.

Yeah, I'm making $12.50 right now, I was at about $10.00 when I was cashier all the time, then I switched to stocking shelves.

Lemons - 4053 Potatos - 4072 Sweet potatos - 4091...

I have gone from being completely noobish with numpad to being godlike. When I work in customer service and we have to count down and reconcile the tills, I blast through the checks like they're nothing, unless neither the customer or the checker have good hand writing.

Another thing that pisses me off is when customers think that since something is on sale, that EVERYTHING within a 10 foot radius of that item is deemed "on sale", and when I tell them that it isn't, they get mad, and I have someone go tell me exactly what is on sale. One time, we had some individual fruit cups for 0.89, and someone brought up a six-pack of a different brand up that rang up for 3.77 or something, and complained that it wasn't what was in the ad. For 1, it's a complete different brand. 2, different size and shape. 3, the price that you THOUGHT you saw was different from what was in the ad. 4, the price that you THOUGHT you saw was for Best Choice, our house brand. *gun* Then they had the nerve to tell me that "There wasn't any Best Choice over there, you're wrong." Ok, we don't know our store, we don't face it every day. Please, teach me how to make bullshit out of thin air!

Edit: Damn you all, I make $6.50, $7.50 on Sundays and holidays. :(

Well it's taken me four years to get to $12.50. I get $18.75 on Sundays, and $25 on holidays, though so does everyone else.

Well, 'least you guys aren't in manual labor.

I did random cashier work at Lowes back in the day as a CSA when they were short shifted on people.

Man I hated doing it but it was by far the easiest part of the day.

Log in, scan shit and take people's money, don't take their bullshit, boot them out of the store.
Log off, hobble back over the L+G and sit on a tractor. Maybe chat it up in the plant nursery.

I just as of today quit my job with a frieght/moving company after a year.

Hard ball busting, back breaking work = not for me.

Interview tomorrow for a brochure delivery place, hells yeah.

Be glad you even have a job. :|
its not exactly difficult to have a job.. join the 95% of 18+ year olds that work. it does involve peeling your eyeballs away from a screen and going and getting the effing job. you dont have to be a brain surgeon.

I might be getting a job at McDonalds.

Don't hurt me.
