is it immoral to file a lawsuit against a company that sells you an unusable product?

Here I am, unable to play HL2.

I bought the game when it came out. Everything was fine until yesterday when it suddenly stopped working. It says I need to connect to Steam first, but this is impossible since Steam can't connect to the servers. No one can figure out how to make it work.

I am now left with an unplayable game. Maybe if I file a lawsuit against this company they will settle with a check for $75 (cost of the game plus court costs). I don't think they would put a lawyer on a plane to come to the east coast, or would they?

Or maybe you can wait a couple of days to get it sorted?

Or maybe it's your PC that's the problem because I have no trouble connecting to steam at the moment?

You have no case. The software works fine, it's your computer and the route it takes to the Steam servers that is the problem. Needless to say, that stuff is all outside Valve's control.

What have you tried?

this is not the steampowered.com forums. And best not make it one.
Wait a couple of days, or see if you got an e-mail from STEAM.

Shesh, you can't play the game for 3 hours and you want to take valve to court?

I'm reading in that thread that you can't get onto the steam network either? Or you just can't get offline mode to work?

I can't get onto the steam network.
I can't play online.
I can't play offline.

You can't sue them, you basically waive that right when you agree to the EULA.

Plus the fact that Valve can throw unlimited funds at you, at best they'll give you your money back out of court (unlikley), at worst they bankrupt you and ruin your life.

There are currently 164,869 people playing games over Steam... I don't think you have a case.

Do you have any other firewall software running? Norton Internet Security or Mcaffe Internet Security? Who is your ISP? Have you had a chance to speak to them about it? Have you made any hardware or software changes to your system recently? Have you tried doing a Windows XP System Restore to the last date you remember it working?

I'm pretty confident it's a problem your end if there's nearly 200,000 people happily playing right now.

EDIT: GSW, that signature is WAY too big. You should know by now - four lines or less!

Heh Chris probably more, half life 2 single player isn't counted in those numbers.

i had that problem for a while, but it was fixed in 30 minutes... maybe i just had good timing

I'll try to explain this so you can understand.

Here goes:

You are a dipshit.

so true dude so true
I bet its a firewall problem

Don't be abusive to him, I do hate topics like this and usually wont help the poster, but I do know what it feels like when something dosent work.

Again I say, the SP2 firewall is a sneaky bitch.

wow a law suit against valve for ur problem? thats even dumber than the publishers of hl2s reason for law suit

Filing law suit...because you cant connect to steam...is it my eyes or is it really you typing and sayign that?

Ya, i am sure you will file a lawsuit that will cost you more money than the game, it makes perfect sense. :rolling:

WRONG!!!!!!!!

Hate to burst your bubble, sonny jim, but the EULA does NOT under ANY circumstances void, cancel or nullify the laws of the country in which a person resides.

I can't play offline.

Looks like he has a case. He paid for the game.It doesnt work OFFLINE and it should.

So why hasn't his been fixed.? Why did it happen in the first place? Why do we need to connect to STEAM to play singleplayer? As I seem to recall it was "one time only to register"..now it's "all the time"?

Stay online to play singleplayer? I think not.....

"INTERNET CONNECTION REQUIRED"

Not to play singleplayer OFFLINE it isn't

Or had you missed that.??

Where on the box does it say MUST STAY CONNECTED TO STEAM FOR ALL PLAY INCLUDING SINGLEPLAYER OFFLINE.

If it says it under minimum requirements on the box without saying "for initial authorization only" or "for multiplayer only" then, yes, it legally covers SP too. If they later added the ability to play in offline mode that is a bonus. You can't sue people if they give you something extra, free of charge, and that part doesn't work (unless it breaks something else, which is not the case here).

WRONG

If the box DOES NOT SAY that you MUST be online 24/7 to play everything including singleplayer then it is FALSE AND MISLEADING ADVERTISING and is an offence under consumer law.

Well then take them to court.

Your purpose here seems to be to complain and slag off valve if you aint going to help then GTFO.

i wonder how long until this thread is locked? maybye 20 mins?

lol

I am specifically pointing out outstanding and unresolved issues. If you don't like the truth then don't shoot the messenger.

Well then take them to court.

Gee that's funny...I saw earlier comments telling the original poster he had no reason and no right to take anyone to court.

Looks to me like a little consistency is called for.

And seeing this thread locked won't surprise me in the least.Seems to me that this is happening a lot with adverse comments on HL2 and STEAM.

The complaints and issues won't go away simply by locking threads or deleting posts.

Five years to develop the game, all that drama and hoopla..and it has turned out to be one of the buggiest games of the year. Fixing the issue with SINGLEPLAYER might have been a very good place to start....and get it done before the game was released.

Not after.

I was being sarcastic in your case.

The "truth" lol that's a hoot, i'm willing to bet that it's sp2 firewall pissing around with his system after he thinks hes turned it off, it's happend to freinds of mine, it's happend to me. You don't see me coming to a forum after 3 hours of it not being able to work and asking if I should sue the company.

And I have seen several HUNDRED posts from users on steampowered alone in the last week saying they cant play offline.I will wager in the next few weeks those will turn into thousands.

Internet registration required:Fine
Internet required for multiplay:fine
Internet required for singleplay? NO.FIX IT.

**** me, a lawsuit because a game isn't working?

Goods that do not perform as advertised owing to failure to provide adequate quality control are subject to review and penalties where directed by the specific consumer agencies.

Gothe I have the same problem but I'm on broadband.

It might be Steam its self, I'm investigating. I dout it's anything in Valve power though.

Oh and by your logic of the minimum requirements because it said on the box I need a graphics card to play the game, it must mean that it's false advertising! Because it does not say I need a graphics card all the time.

700 hundred yup great statistic posting there, i'll forgive you because the forums are not up.

Well I saw 200000 on steam currently not complaining about it, plus the people who it dosent count playing half life 2 singleplayer at the moment.

You don't get it..that's fine. Can't teach the ignorant who wont listen.

Oh snap looks like I just destroyed your argument.

Oh shut up, if someone really does feel the need to take a massive company to court over something as trivial as a game (and expect to get something out of it) then I really do pity them.

Heck i'll just counter the next point your about to make.

You said

"WRONG If the box DOES NOT SAY that you MUST be online 24/7 to play everything including singleplayer then it is FALSE AND MISLEADING ADVERTISING and is an offence under consumer law."

Under the minimum requirements it also states that I need a CPU to play the game, well it dosent say that I need the CPU 24/7 so does that mean that I can take it out and play the game?

OMFG It dosent work! OMG that's against consumer law!!!!

I'm closing this simply because there's one already open for people to help solve his problem.

You can try and file a law-suit if you like, but leave it a few more days first. I'm sure you'll find it'll work eventually.
