Is metal becoming unpopular?

Or he just doesn't like some of the tenets of Metal.

It's not becoming unpopular, it's just people are listening to the wrong metal.

I've heard most of those and they're rock-based rather than metal-based. Just because you have distorted guitars does not mean you have metal. Are Green Day metal? Most certainly not, but Nine Inch Nails has more in common with them than most metal I know.

For me to consider something as metal, it has to be heavy in one way or another. Tracks like Wish, Happiness In Slavery, Gave Up, March of the Pigs, Star****ers Inc etc are way too heavy for "rock".

All of Broken is metal. Except Suck. I have no idea what that is.

"Happiness in Slavery" is certainly not Metal. It's easily his most Industrial. Even "Star****ers" doesn't really count because of its cut-up, breakbeat framework. Really, Broken is just very aggressive Industrial Rock.

Not like this pedantry matters. Giving it a label isn't going to change the music itself.

Well they did win two metal awards... one for Wish and one for their live performance of Happiness In Slavery.
