My donkey has run away. It was a nice donkey too. :(

*ahem*

That's what it is, condeming a whole nation, hundeds of millions of people because of the acts carried on by a handful of men, well that's just idiotic and shows some serious lack of brain activity
Well I'd have to agree but the government of a nation is kinda supposed to represent that nation to others.

Obviously that is a stupid idea as well...

Yeah, that's why I think the UN is a joke. They (rightfully) challenged the reasons behind the Iraq conflict, but supported the idea that we should bomb the heck out of Afghanistan- a practically Third World country that is still in tatters- because their government supported the actions of terrorists. People always say it, but it would be like the UK nuking Ireland during the Troubles, just because a few MPs mouthed vague sympathies to the IRA's position.

And of course the UN have happily ignored Israel's numerous violations of their "laws" and watched the Rwandan genocide, but what you going to do...? Maybe with the horrors of the Sudan and the tragic tsunami we can begin a redemption with some decent aid responses.

Lets see now...

US - Software Patents!
EU - (made clear recently) No Software Patents!

Atleast it shows that the (some :p) people in yurop are fighting back against the M$ type corporations and lobbyist groups.

Oh yeah, that's great. Let's allow people to benefit from the hard work of others.

Yeah. I actually have respect for Mr. Gates. He literally started at the bottom.

Eh? How so? He sold a technology he legally bought and modified into an OS to (IBM was it?) and made millions.

But anyways, my point being is that he started from the very bottom. He went from Private to Astronaut (If I can use the Sims job system)

Like that Russian guy, went in as a Private and retired as a 3 star General. Highest anyone's ever gotten from the bottom. Respek.

Its funny how true some of the comments here are. I personally think the US will eventually end with fragmentation. There are clear phychological differences between the South, the Midwest, the Pacific Coast states and the Northeast.. and many of these differences predate WW2.

I think it is a testiment to the versatility of the US government that we have remained a union under such conditions. But I see it everyday. It would seem by all accounts that the country is becoming more conservative, but the Northeast, which I can speak for is becoming more left leaning all the time.

From Alexander Tylers 1770 (I think) book; "The Cycle of Democracy"

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years.

These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage.

If you want to argue about the direction of democracy, then read this book, its really quite interesting

200 hundred....hasn't this country lasted over 200? :|

Has it? Is it still a true democracy or is it on its way to the next stage?
I'm saying its in a transitional stage "selfishness to complacency"

So we have 3 more stages left....only time will tell.

Dependancy, the longest stage, is a period that today would occur under totalitarian, 1984 style control... it wouldnt be nice :\

Well us southerns have been prepared for that since the civil war...

lol... exactly
I could see some civil war happening, I mean, face it.. thats what will be the end of "the United States"... it will end with civil war.
The only other option is a slow transformation into "Airstrip one" lol.

The problem is that it will probably happen so gradually that by the time they notice it they won't have a chance to use their guns and fight back against it.

Well I don't think it will end the United States...just...reform it.

heh, something will eventually... my guess is civil war, or a massive, massive breakdown of economics.

Well when the British Empire collapsed* the UK survived... we just weren't very popular in the world. Although you could argue that the USA possesses no such empire, their economic importance means that in the event of something as extreme as a civil war or a second depression most of the world would feel the pinch.

Yes, I'm aware that you could argue that we deliberately rolled back our Empire but economic pressure from the French and the Germans- combined with the usual resistance occupied nations offered- resulted in the "collapse". Just bear with me.
