I was kind of surprised that there's no topic on this. Its all over the BBC World Service. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/5119402.stm
Looks like it's going to be a very interesting next fews days. They've got tanks on the border...and refuse to negotiate. Hopefully they won't have to use them...(hopes for safe return of soldier to prevent military action). Thoughts?
 
If the kid dies Israel will probably launch a big military operation :S If that would happen there is a chance this could turn into another mideast war since Iran and Syria will probably not "like" that too much.
Ah well lets pray for the safe return of the kid and that this doesnt escalate.
 
They've already sealed their fate. They will be hunted down and killed as terrorists. Their only hope is to save some of their associates from certain death by releasing the soldier.

Isreal should not be so far into Palestine anyway.

If Israel is ever close to losing a war or gets nuked themselves they unleash nuclear rainfall on all middle east nations hostile to them. It's an official decree but I forget what it was called. I don't blame them.

It's not 'in anger' it's if they're going to be defeated in an invasion or they are nuked first. The Arab nations that are hostile will completely raize, rape, and pillage Israel and its cities and you know that's the truth. It's an "If we go down, we're taking you with us" situation- a deterrent. Mutually assured destruction. It's their method of survival in an area where insane extremists want them dead and pushed into the sea.
 
If the surronding Arabic nations had they're way, every Israeli would be murdered, maimed, raped and slained. No doubt about it. They're hatred for Israel is supreme. Without a doubt.

I doubt the soldier will be released in one piece. Maybe two. Maybe three or four, but it's war. It's been happening for thousands of years. Every now and then you'll have a ceize fire, but it doesnt last. Peace wouldnt come. I don't see either side disappearing either. It's one of those things. :smoking:

I had employees from Israel on work visa. These guys were Palestinians. We had talked about the situation over there and agree on the above.

You've got the Six Day War as well.

I've had trips canceled due to the situation over there. Don't tell me it's a walk in the park. :)

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli warplanes knocked out power to much of northern and central Gaza early Wednesday as Israel demanded the return of a soldier kidnapped by Palestinian militants.

Israeli aircraft also attacked two bridges in central Gaza to limit the militants' ability to move the soldier, the Israel Defense Forces said.

Video from the Palestinian Ramattan news agency showed fires burning at the site of the power station.

Israeli troops and tanks are massed along the Gaza border, but the IDF said land units had not crossed into Gaza.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Tuesday threatened an "extended campaign" against Palestinian leaders unless 19-year-old Cpl. Gilad Shalit is released.

"All targets" would be considered for possible action, Olmert told Israel's parliament, the day after ruling out any deals with militants for Shalit's release.

"We would not make compromises with terror. We would not hold negotiation with [terror]," Olmert told the Knesset amid the escalating crisis.

"No terrorist would be immune."

Capt. Jacob Dallal, an Israeli military spokesman, denied reports that Israeli ground troops had crossed into Gaza, but he said Israel will go to "whatever lengths necessary" to bring Shalit back.

"We are trying to make it clear to the Palestinian Authority and to the terror organizations that we will take the necessary steps to secure his safe return," he said.

Israel has slapped a land and sea blockade on Gaza, cutting off people's movements and shipments of fuel and food, nine months after returning control of the territory to the Palestinians. (Watch tanks mass as tensions run high -- 2:27)

Inside Gaza, Palestinians have dumped piles of sand on major roads, intended to slow any advance of Israeli tanks and armor and provide cover for gunmen.

Olmert said he did not want to hurt innocents, but the Israeli defense minister said the potential offensive would be deadly.

"There is no doubt we will have to carry out an operation which could cost many lives, but the Palestinian groups have to understand there is a price to pay for any attacks against Israel," said Defense Minister Amir Peretz.

funny but the US supported the iraqi national accord that did the same in iraq during the 90's ..yet it's acceptable because at the time Allawi and the INA were paid stooges for the CIA and had much better press (ie: none) ..one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist

Call me pessimistic, but I see the prospect of war as a relatively good sign.

All these decades of stupid, stupid conflict haven't ended from skirmishes or semi-terrorist attacks. Maybe it's about time one side just wins and gets it over with.

I consider them both equally culpable for all this constant nonsense, so I don't care which is victorious.
But in the end, I think a quick decisive war could finally lead to peace in the long run.

I'm getting sick of people on the left and right trying to defend one or the other. They're both at fault here for their tactics.
