Ok heres a great steam problem story. I just purchased, after it's been out forever, Portal. I was skeptical at first when I bought it (only ten bucks) because my computer has a slightly crappy graphics card. So I decided I'd give it a shot, I pop the disk in and it starts installing steam.... This is where my frustration began. Two days ago. So steam finish's its installation, remember, I don't even have an account yet or anything. I've never used steam ever and this is what it displays after double-clicking the icon. Steam is temporarily unavailable, Please try again later. Now I'm not gonna pretend to be a genius with computers but I'd like to say I know my way around one. More than an average user. The thing that really bothers me is that I don't even think the graphics will work! But I can't even get through to steam! So even if I do fix this it might still not work... Why did I post this here?!? Good question! Because steampowered won't let me sign up to their website, it leaves me with the same comment... PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER... I'm gonna kill myself...

Are you attempting to start up two days ago, or today? If today, any connection problems may sort themselves out soon. Left 4 Dead went Live this morning, so it may be expected that Steam may be having some problems coping. If that's the case, you just got unlucky picking a period when server load is going to increase. Nothing to do except wait or keep trying.

Steam Support has a FAQ on Troubleshooting Network Connectivity that may be worth running through. Good luck, and I hope Portal works for you!

Yes, I know about the firewalls, been there done that. In fact, sorry for not mentioning it, that was the first thing I did. After that I checked all the help forums I could find using Google. Then I learned all my problems could be solved by deleting the clientregistry.blob file and that other one (app something dot blob?). Well I deleted the client registry file and I do not have the app something or other blob file. So I tried again and of course, knowing my luck, it did not work. So I'm back to square one, just me and a never been used steam application that freaks out every time I open it..................:flame:
