agreed, but the movie (the well known one at least) was made before the game (which sucked imo, by the way).

But think of tomb raider the movie, stephen king movies (not all bad), etc
 
well I for one would be kinda impressed if a director and writer could pull off a film where the main star never utters a word. Burton could likely pull that off, and it would be a good talking point for the chatshow circuit and interviews "main star of the film never speaks, shock horror!" lol, I bet it would be really neat. Maybe have him as a right surley bugger who just looks and glares at people or sometihng instead of speaking, or is such a weakling he is forever being interupted by the unsociable scientists so never gets a word past his lips.. until maybe the very end where he could just say "shit" when he realises his fate :)
 
Fenric1138. the fans like me, you and many more always want more, in our case good script. As we know that Gordon does not speak a wrod and if you implement it in a movie maybe it will be ok depends on the action sequences, such as in TERMINATOR 1, when ARNOLD only said 76 words in the whole film (I ll be back, give me your cloths....etc). the movie is still 5* till this second and why because of the excellent directing by chamse cameron and what he did in the film's and story line. so we need first a very professional director who played HL1 at least two times and a mind blowing script.

That would be very impressive, a main character who (hardly) speaks and still keeping the audience glued to the screen. But I think this cannot be done for action movies. Only the movies with enough "psychological in-depth twists"... Not to say that HL doesn't have this in the game, but I think that the movie would be made for a large audience, so a lot of people would want a jive talking and cussin hero who gets the nice chick in the end... hey maybe that'll happen in HL2

You have a point there.. But the movie should not make Gordon look like a "not that bright dude" like Arnie
 
Boondock Saints is one of my favorite movies and I know the guy that you're talking about. He would make a great Gordon though. All he would have to do is grow some hair because I think his head was shaved in the movie (forgot haven't seen it in a long time).
 
Okay so that covers Gordon, the director and the movie possibilities, but what about the rest of the cast (Alyx has been covered in another thread, but if you have some more suggestions... go ahead.

Alyx: Jada Pinkett

Eli Vance : Samuel L. Jackson

G-Man: Kyle McLachlan or Cancerman from x-files
 
Neat thread. Here's my ideas:

:) Gordon should be cast as a mute. All his character could come out through his body language and facial expressions.

:) The movie could be in a first person perspective. I think someone already said this one.

:) They should have that Counterstrike music that's going around as the credit tune at the end. Or something similar.

Yeah, get a good director on the job, a good writer, and well an overall good team and I'm sure there's enough ways to do it where Gordon is never heard to speak yet those watching it don't actually -notice- he doesn't speak. As in, they watch the film, they love the film, then they suddenly realise as they walk from the cinema that the star didn't say a word. It can be done and if its done well it'll work perfectly and be a great twist. As you say, the Terminator, very little dialogue from Arnie in that. Then there's Evil Dead II. the actual script for that is very very short on dialogue and look what a classic thats become. It's entirely possible, and plausable to carry a storyline without needing the main character to speak. The scientists, the security guards, the grunts, the assassins. Have a minor character in there called Adrian Shepard who could say a few words (it would be interesting to see if a minor character such as him would then become the best loved character heh) that happened IIRC with the first LotR's movie, a hobbit that never had a speaking part, wasn't even named and was only really seen in the background ended up with a pretty large fan base. Why I haven't a clue but thats cinema goers for ya :)

Oh and there are of course all the old classics before the "talkies" their ancient now but still enjoyable to watch. I'd love to see them do this, a film where the main star never speaks, classic in the making. You just _know_ others will try copy it and cock up constantly afterwards lol

Then there's the fact the game has a great storyline, its an old formula and its been done many times in various ways, but HL just seems to have got it right. Then there's the second film, and a third, neither having him speaking, showing three times they can get something right that so many others will try copy and get wrong

Then there's the designs, how many of us would love to see those tentacles in the silo on the big screen, or the garg running towards us in an iMax cinema, the scream in THX surround sound blah etc. damn that would be cool :):) lol
 
At least Valve is picky about who will make the movie and such.
If there will be a movie (and I hope there will be!), it will probably be great. I just hope they won't make it "just another action movie", just like HL wasn't "just a game" :p

It's been optioned a few times I think. For those who don't know what that is, basically the premise is handed to various studios or directors and the get to check things out and have the -option- of taking it on board, after an agreed amount of time their option runs out along with various deals attached to it, and they can't make it unless they do it again. But while its being optioned, another production company or director can't just come along and say they'll make it as those under option have first refusal in that case.

What I worry about is Gabe may just give in and give HL to the wrong studio (such as Troma or worse Pendragon) just to get it done. It'll be a terrible day if that happens

Gabe should give it to someone who's also a fan and knows how to make movies, has years of experience and can talk Charlie into playing the part and also investing in it and who is already on good terms with New Line Cinema and could easily sort a distribution deal with them... Gabe should give it to me :D

No but really, atleast you'd know it was being done right and not turned into typical Hollywood trash where the guy gets the girl at the end :)
 
Anyone think the guy who plays Grissom on CSI looks like Gordon Freeman with that beard he got this season?

from a first person view, as a film, probably not no. As a quirky experimental film then it could. But mainstream or Indie it could damage it filmed in that way. It would probably be better to produce a smaller film as a test to see what people think aswell as to iron out possible problems with that method first rather than risk it on the film itself, that way if it failed the proper film wouldn't be harmed ;)

Dr Kleiner (First name?)
G-Man
Barney Calhoun
Otis (will he make a comeback?)
various thugs

and of course ideal director etc which you guys seem to have decided on already i think. the above characters won't necessarily be in a HL movie, we're just going on what we know from HL2.

I'd go for William Dafoe as Gordon, Halle Barry as Alyx and Morgan Freeman als Eli Vance. Not sure who I'd cast for Barney and Kleiner...

Barney = Joey from Friends. Go compare some hl2 gameplay pictures with him and you will see almost an exact match.
 
Morgan Freeman would be great as Eli!

This is kinda like a brainstorming-script i made up in this very moment:

A cool introsequence in the movie would be like a war-torn laboratory area with blistering lights that go on and off constantly and such (you know when they go off the screen is completely black) , and the camera's panning leftwards while Alien Slaves run to the left shooting lightning flashes at some police guards HL1-style. All accompanied with some postapocalyptic dramatic music. People running everywhere , screaming.

What if Gordon was telling the story ? The first thing he'd say would be like: "We were wrong. Terribly wrong. The human race shouldn't be experimenting with the supernatural. We did , and this is what happened."

*cut to gordon hiding behind a corner (he's wearing his normal scientist clothing , not HEV-suit.) with the alien slaves slowly approaching him , and he turns around and shoots with his pistol a couple of times*

A guard approaches , saying something like : "Hey , you shouldn't be here , we're enclosing the entire area to keep the freaks from getting further into the complex! We're gonna fill it up with Halon-gas!"

Gordon answers: "Okay, make sure no one is left in here when you do."

They both run through a closing gate, and watches the alien slaves filling the hallway room , trying to open the shut gates.

What they don't realise , is that there are a few scientists left that are unnoticed by the alien forces, running in the hallway connected to the office the scientists are hidden in.

Gordon gets into a room with monitors showing what the surveillance cameras are seeing, and notices the scientists trying to get out from the enclosed room.

Then the gas is released, sucking up all oxygen in the entire lab area (you know what Halon gas is , if you've seen Resident Evil), and the scientists are losing their breath and bashing at the camera in that room , screaming for help. (this is a little like in the beginning of The Rock) Gordon watches this , gets a small tear in his eye and turns away

Camera cuts back to the scientists, choking and dying..

Now someone else should make up the next scene ! ;)

Barney: I dunno why, but I keep thinking of that bloke from "Married, with Children". I don't really know that many popular actors...

Yeah man I know the guy you mean he's refered to as the cleaner and doesn't say a word. You hear a sinister voice on the phone after he clans a house and says " this house is clean" but you don't see him say it he's quite a cool person to play Gordon. He's also less familiar I think putting someone too recodnisable as Gordon would ruin the role.
