John Carmack - 20 minute video interview

The uber geek returns. Watching interview now.

Quite the interview. I foresee a huge resurgence of PC gaming in the next year or so.

what does he mean by API interface? what is that and how does effect PC gamers?

ninja edit: really good Interview he's a great speaker.

He pretty much confirmed with we've known for years now, that consoles are holding games back. That's the only reason why a few years old graphics card or integrated graphics card can handle most games available today.

Anyway, I agree with what he was saying about optimising production time. if it is possible to keep quality at current standards but cut production times in half, then by all means go for it.

I quite like that Carmack is still around, even if I have no interest in Rage.

Since Quake 2 I've always thought if I had a chance to meet one person in the world, I'd like to talk to John Carmack, my hero!

id won't be dead until Carmack decides to die or go full-time with Armadillo Aerospace.

id is not dead. I was really happy that they pushed the frontiers of technology with Doom 3's unified lighting/shadowing, their Megatextures idea etc. And when they actually nail gameplay, I'll be an id fanboy again.

So when were you an id fanboy?
I remember playing the Quake 2 demo and being blown away by it about a year before Half-life. id (through Doom) introduced me to computers, gaming, technology, cheatcodes, walkthroughs, programming... everything I held dear for the next decade, basically. They sort of lost the plot around Doom 3, but Carmack never lost his touch. Of course Crytek stole their glory for a while, but like Carmack says designing an engine is always about tradeoffs, and he made the wrong bet in that generation - nobody followed his lead into the unified lighting model, while everyone focused on getting spectacular outdoor rendering which Crytek paved the way for with FarCry.

Really? I could tell you that consoles were going to hold back PC development the day they announced that 360 wouldn't have a guaranteed HD, and wouldn't ship with HD-DVD as standard. Those two short sighted decisions screwed everyone (gamers & developers) royally.

I'll bet id still hasn't learned that you can do a lot more with gameplay now than you could in 1994.

they never learn, do they? rage is going to suck so hard.

I know... Personally I think they should go back to their roots and make another game like the original Doom. Ridiculous weapons, over the top action and tons of monsters. Arcade goodness. After all there aren't many of those on the market anyway.

The logic is that if they are stuck in the 90's from a gameplay standpoint they might as well embrace it, stop trying to make "edgy" "serious games", and go the way of the serious sam series.

I agree, their games are mostly tech demos when they come out.

But, I enjoyed Doom 3 and Quake 4 (although wasn't that made by Raven??). Fun games.

you're just looking for rise out of unozero. I'd say you're a master baiter

Nah, I just can't help myself when I see insignificant grammar mistakes. :) But seriously, I consider myself an Id fan due to the number of hours I've put into their games, and I really hope they turn their image around because I would imagine a lot of the young people these days only associate their name with non-innovative shooters with good shadows.
