Just gotta say, I got L4D during the 50% off deal, and LOVE IT. I've played through the single player campaign to get the grips on the control and the maps, and so I could enjoy the game at my own pace without anyone pestering me online.

I'm starting to play Verses and I like it. I haven't yet figured out the zombie's powers, and it seems that their special attacks don't work easily. I'll figure it out soon enough.

One thing i felt could've been done better was the movie style single-player. VALVe WANTED us to connect with the characters, but I never felt that i could because every time we got rescued, the next level was the same thing, just a different setting. I never really felt like I GOT anywhere other than the next level. Maybe i just expected the epic-style storytelling that VALVe is renowned for. I would've liked to see what became of the survivors when you're rescued. Does the world live? Does the millitary save everyone? does anything I've done in the game have an effect in the world? It just seemed disconnected.

Also, I liked the part when you get to the safe house with the guy in it who won't let you in, but instead calls a hoard with the church's bells. I thought I would finnaly get to meet another person, but he ends up just turning into a zombie.

Good luck on Versus it can be pretty tough as the infected aren't really all that strong.
In the original version you were supposed to be rescued then something would happen and you'd progress to the next level. For example in the end of No Mercy when the helicopter pilot says that he "had a little accident" What was supposed to happen was that he got bit and when your in the heli he'd turn into a zombie and the heli would crash. There was supposed to be a better story but Valve cut out the story cutscenes and the only way to kinda find out what's happening is to keep playing it over and over and hear the different character takes.
 
Finally, we have a name for the guy in the safe room, Fred "Better Safe Than Sorry" Ermenheimer. Does he only turn into a boomer? I can't remember at the moment.
 
Zombies? No. The #1 cause of death in a zombie apocolypse is stupidity. Smoking doesn't help either but It's pretty far down on the list.

Fixed. I hate when people spell it like that. Probably because my elementary school teachers made such a big deal about it when I was a kid.

I started L4D on single-player aswell, all the way through to the end of Dead Air. I then played Blood Harvest with some mates. As they say, first time's always the best, and on my first playthrough I can vividly remember lots of brilliant moments in the game. It was (& still is) f*cking amazing, because, like you said, you can play through at your own pace and the other characters will follow your lead. You can also pay particular attention to special little pieces in the game (e.g. writing on the walls in the saferooms). Another reason why I prefered to do this is that you can listen to the different characters' dialogue more intently, and funny reactions to different things throughout the game. Although I spend about 90% of my time in L4D on Versus, I actually prefer single-player/campaign with good friends far more. Don't ask why, I just do. Probs originates from when I was younger playing SP practically all the time.

In regards to the removal of movie-scenes between campaigns before release, I've also gotta say that I'm disappointed; I really enjoyed the intro-movie and definetly would've liked to have seen more. And yeah, this would have helped build on the characters alot more.

Two tips that come to mind for the OP in VERSUS (as Survivors):

1. Rather than thinking of looking out for yourself all the time, try to constantly look out for your teammates instead.

If every single person in the team follows this simple rule, trust me, it'll work wonders when everyone's getting pounced/smoker'd. This golden rule GREATLY helps your team from degenerating into chaos when things go awry. For example, I've seen so many people try to push their way out of a swarming horde to safety, instead of heeding another teammate's screams of "Get if off me!" and simply turning around and shooting the Hunter off of that pinned person only several feet away.

2. Keep moving.

The opposing Infected team are waging a war of attrition against you, meaning that the longer you hang around, the more spawns the Infected are allowed to get, thus allowing them more opportunities to deal damage to your team.

On the contrary, after successfully defeating the Infected team at a given point in the level + clearing any zombies in your way, move as far as possible. By doing this, it forces the Infected to take the initiative instead; they're forced to keep pace with you and are given less time to devise any plans/ambushes. And of course, this means overall less spawns for them in total because your team is progressing through the level faster. One step closer to the saferoom, baby.

There are some exceptions. For example, there might be medpacks/pills in those rooms (you'll get to learn where the Director typically places them). Or we need to stop here to get ammo/grab T2 weaponry. This is absolutely fine. But even so, try to do this as fast as possible.

I wish the director would have Henry turn into a tank every once in a while. It would be hilarious.
 
If the survivors all stick together, making it hard to pin them as a hunter, just wait until a boomer biles on them and start meleeing them. You can usually do a shit-load of damage before they even notice you.
