Just no (Mass Effect anime being made)

Why would I watch a show that you wont even type out the whole name for? I'd much rather rewatch a trailer for GoT anyways.

EDIT: Oh, Ghost in the Shell? That movie was terrible. Back in the day, when I wasn't aware that all anime sucked, I watched GitS twice, trying to understand why it was considered good and saw no reason for it.

..It was a series too.

Copy/Pasted names from what I've got lying around. 2.0 is just the revamped original. GitS isn't something I recommend to people I don't know. There are far better shows for new comers to the whole Anime thing. Off the top of my head Black Lagoon is pretty good although I might just be saying that because of the recent OVAs.

when I wasn't aware that all anime sucked

Insert thing you like that I don't care for sucks. I hate this attitude.

What they said, the series is great. If you weren't already aware, the source material is by the same guy as Appleseed.

Also Black Lagoon is terrible.

Remus are you seriously trying to say all anime has the same style? I know what you're talking about but all anime is not generic anime style. Please compare Shinchan to Ghost in the Shell.

Huh. Seems I did have more to contribute.

No that's not what I mean. I know that there are just as many "anime" drawing style as there are western cartoon drawing styles. However there are fundamental differences in the rules applied in the eastern styles which I do not like. Things like proportions on characters, the way characters move, the way facial expressions are depicted, so on and so forth. All these things are drasticaly different from their western counterparts.

I could have no idea if a cartoon is of eastern origin or not, but can still detect these things.
One example is the animated series "The Centurions" which at that time I thought was made by american animators, but found it peculiar why I could recognise those same elements fround in eastern animation styles. Much later when looking it up on the Internet I was not surprised to find that the show was indeed produced by an american company, but the actual drawing and animating was done by a company in Japan, and I was thinking "Hah! I knew it!".

In closing I would like to say that the styles in "Ghost in the Shell" and "Shinchan" are both ugly as hell. And yeah finding a movie/tv series/cartoon visually unapealing is a valid reason not to watch it.

So what do you even like? American or otherwise. I personally never liked Shin chan because I can't stand looking at that art style. But I have no idea where you're coming from when you start talking about proportions and then say you don't like GITS, which is pretty darn proportional.

It's this:

I can't stand looking at that art style.

But extend it to every art style ever concieved in Japan.

I just think they look ****ing ridiculous.
A few years ago I saw on HBO the anime film "Metropolis", and even though the story itself was good, I just couldn't ****ing take anything seriously with the characters looking like that.

So...what do you like? Because all I can think is that you simply don't like anything at all Japanese or not. Considering the differences between Shin chan and GITS.

I really like the art style in "Batman the animated series" and Batman Beyound for example. Also Justice League, which has a similar art style.

I like those too. Guess I just will never understand (I mean Shin chan is really not much of a commonality, who would like that).

Don't really care much about anime, but one has to wonder why they must make an anime for everything..

But does this really matter? Because none of us are going to watch it and its not like theyre making Mass Effect 3 in an anime style.

Insert thing you like that I don't care for sucks. I hate this attitude.

I gave anime several chances, I didnt like any of it. I took suggestions from friends, from the internets, from review sites, and I didnt like any of it. I despise the art style, and the stories have always been mediocre at best, with characters almost always being unrelatable and uninspiring. So hate the attitude or not, I think the genre sucks.

Seems some of you are new to this game. Stay the **** away from any thread with anime in the title.

Compared to the religion thread currently going on this is a civil discussion.

I feel I should point out that I think Shin chan is quite funny, it's the art I don't like (enough to not watch it).

I think one anime done 'American' style is Panty and Stocking, it's basically the same style as Power Puff Girls but with more sex/violence/language (I'd say the animation is similar if not identical).

Oopsy Krynn, but not all anime can be categorized by one particular style, form, or content.

Genre: a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content

Oopsy my ass.
That's like saying that all Western animated cinema is one genre. It's simply not.

Oh please, just admit you love staring at Wonder Woman's animated boobs.

Not all anime can be categorized by the anime style? How can it be called anime then?

That's like saying that all Western animated cinema is one genre. It's simply not.

Western animation has several distinct styles. Anime is a style on its own.

anime is barely even animated. this is why it's the defacto style in that part of the world; because it's cheaper to produce than something like Bugs Bunny where the characters are fully animated in their movements. hell even north american animation isnt as well animated because it's expensive and time consuming. you can add a lot of detail to images when the only part that's animated is the mouth or the eyes. it's gotten a lot better over the years but there isnt a single anime film (that I've seen) that is as well animated as say anything from disney

ya you dont seem to understand what the word "animated" means

I've heard good things about Akira's animation though I've never seen it.

Also, Krynn, your arguement is incredibly circular.

Also, Krynn, your arguement is incredibly circular.

My argument is that anime is a style, and that a genre can be a category of artistic composition characterized by a particular style. Ergo, without having a better name for it, I can refer to anime movies as their own genre. The same can be said for Pixar/Dreamworks movies. The claim however, was that all Western animation could be categorized as a genre despite western animation having significantly different styles. Anime is a style of its own, "western animation" is a broader name for a collection of many different styles.

Now, if you wouldn't mind, explain to me how thats circular, as I can't see it.

serious scifi with a little bit of comedy but more heavy on human relationships and what the future for exploration looks like for Humans and mainly Astronauts!

*snip*
Ooooh, seems interesting, will have to check that out. Thanks uno!

stop watching lucky star stern

really? this is what you're using to argue the point that anime is well animated? the characters only have the broadest possible reactions to everything. their mouths even barely move

How much of this can be attributed to cultural differences? I feel that has always been what has disturbed most people about anime.

also just watched an episode of bugs bunny, it's been so long. I can't see how it's much better. Cartoon animation in general is half assed.

Who the **** cares about animation anyway. Most if not all western cartoons are more exaggerated anyway, meaning the characters are constantly moving and in often unrealistic manners. You don't see as much of that in anime, (yes, I know one of the things anime is known for are exaggerated gestures, but that is not all anime and it's not constant like a typical western comical cartoon) so a lack of animation work isn't really a lack at all.

This thread is so stupid. Not that I expected anything better in an anime thread on hl2.net
