Kotick Shenanigans

Kotick is an intriguing fellow. Sure, there's no shortage of greedy, corrupt corporate CEOs. But I've never seen one who was this open about it.

Haha, yeah, those silly console-dependent publishers.

Hey Kotick, what's your biggest selling franchise again?

Oh yeah, a ****ing console game.

Their other big earner is Blizzard though, which is all-PC and largely online.

Of course, he's still a megalomaniacal douche.

Yeah, but that's a tricky market to expand, case in point 95% of MMOs in the last five years. In any case I'm not sure how you go from "hey WoW makes a lot of money" to "hey we're dominating the online space JUST LIKE FACEBOOK!"

Sure. WoW may be big, but Facebook is 50x bigger. In terms of gaming Actiblizzard have a very significant slice of the pie between their various titles. Him bringing Facebook into it is just grandstanding/hubris.

If only Activision could charge money for WoWbook. And have advertisements. And, accept donations to "make it better". What else? How else can they get more money? Each comment costs $1.

Get a load of this guy. I've never seen anything like this.

Why would letting people buy just the online component display innovation? I'm not getting the connection here...

I really enjoyed him telling Kotick like it is.

Also, is it really proper to imply Atomic Games are independent? They are after all owned by Destineer(A publishing house which was founded by Peter Tamte when he left Bungie in 2000.)

We don’t have an Activision anything - it’s Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer.

"That, to me, is one of the unassailable rules of building a publishing company. And in every case except for two, the original founders of the studios are still running the studios today.

Lol, "every case except for two"?

You mean 1?

But [EA has] been struggling for a really long time. The most difficult challenge it faces today is: great people don’t really want to work there.

"It’s like, if you have no other option, you might consider them. They have some… the team that makes Madden is a really great team, it’s been able to manage, capture and keep some good people. But we have no shortage of opportunity to recruit out of EA
Lol, that's why Infinity Ward was trying to leave Activision for EA, right? :rolling:

you can’t be a floor wax and then decide that you’re going to become a dessert topping

I think he means all acti owned studios there not just those 3 he named

If you do a really good job - and a lot of our studios do - you get to pick what is, in my view, the most difficult thing to pick in the industry: to make original intellectual property."

it’s Treyarch, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer.

Yeah EA sucks but if there's one good thing that comes out of there, it's ****ing Madden.

Are you kidding me? Dude's wearing 5-inch thick money goggles.

that was cuz since that game started to get famous they wanted something back of it.....even if they cancelled it first and didnt bothered when ea picked it up until you know it started to get fame

I think Bobby Kotick sometimes confuses himself as someone else, and that he doesn't realize that hes running Activision. EA has shitty working conditions, yes. Activision has shitty work conditions as well though. The pot is calling the kettle black here.

"Kotick’s relationship with studio talent is well-documented in litigation," EA corporate communications VP Jeff Brown tells Gamasutra in a statement.

-HAHAAHA OH SNAP

They've been on the rebound, IMO. They've started creating original titles like Dead Space and Dante's Inferno, and have published games for Valve and Bioware without pressuring them to sacrifice quality over $$$.

So we now have Kotick and EA ripping on each other? Isn't this like the Kettle calling the Pot black?

Yeah, exactly. If you want to single out one of their franchises as being excellent, maybe pick something that doesn't just so happen to be their biggest revenue flow (probably) and yet the most creatively bankrupt.

Like I keep saying, the guy is supervillain transparent. He's not even trying.

I would gladly go to war with EA if it meant we got to take down Activision.

Then I'd sabotage EA from the inside.

Is there some rule that whichever publisher has the highest revenue must become a supervillian? Do you have to sell your soul to get there or something? I remember when it was EA...

atleast EA seem to be trying to get some respect back

mirror edge is proof of it due to how risky that game was

and thats good for me

Actually i believe EA has bigger revenue than activision but not profit

Is anyone else getting the vibe that Activision might attempt their own console? That's fine by me, because I would LOVE to see it fail.

Bobby Kotick is going to buy out the Phantom.

Calling it.

Haha, yeah. I called it a while ago. He practically spelled it out at one point. Unfortunately, I can't find that little piece.

I win.

Is it just me who thinks that Kotick Shenanigans sounds like an amusing spin-off cartoon? You know, like Bobby Kotick has to team up with Jack Thompson to find an escaped monkey at the Glastonbury festival, or something.

If anybody wants to think up a theme tune, I just want them to know that I am 100% behind them.
