I've never been to a LAN party before, and a kid in my high school is having one on friday and I want to go. Is it typical that you have to bring your own PC to these things?

Absolutely. I doubt a kid in high school is supplying all the PC's required for a good LAN party. Unless it's being hosted by an internet cafe/LAN gaming center. In that case, you may not need to bring your PC.

it's pretty much expected you bring your own PC. Sometimes moniters are supplied, but usually, it's entirely your PC.

Ok, makes sense, of course the kid wouldn't have 20 extra PC's at his house :p

I recommend taking boot disks and other stuff like that as well.

The LAN parties I goto are all in our school so we just use their mice, keyboards, monitors, and cat5 cable.

:O Bring some sort of weapon as well, peeps these days love to jack stuff.

When my friend has one I just bring my PC but he has extra monitors we can use so we don't have to haul over our giant CRTs.

My friend stole so much stuff, he just stuffed it all into his computer. He stole a few harddrives, power cables and a few mice(they were all optical). He was never allowed to come back and I am glad, he is an asshole.

Like Direwolf said... its half the fun! The other half is to walk around talking with people that you dont know.

I never play at lans :)

I only go to LANs with people I know, so that way no one tries to take my shit whileI'm not around.

I've never been to a lan...ALthough i have kind of hosted my own, it was just for family and friend (and that isn't supposed to be plural)

My brother and my cousin brought over their computers meaning we had 5 comps (mine, my brother's, my other brother's my mum's and my cousin's) which we could play games on. If the game was something like BF1942 though, then only 4 comps could play it but we had some fun on Settlers 4.

About the friend, he sometimes come over and we have 2 way lans, sometimes 3 way if my brother can be bothered.

Feel better now? ;)

And I've never been to a LAN Partay. ;(

Heh, ask this to my friends, with what they call a LAN party, and you'll get "Huh? Computer? Dude, we're all bringing our X-Boxes!".

I've done that, 4 Xboxes, 4 TVs, 16 people, some Halo fun.

I love Lans.

My school has 6-7 computer rooms (only two of them decent. One with some form of p4 while the other has around 30 Athlon 2500+'s) Holding a CS tourney could effectitvly bring in a few hundred dollars. Sadly no-one has done one properly yet, So I'm starting one when Term 3 rolls around.

every lan I've ever been at has been bring your own hardware. I don't think it's unfair to ask someone to bring their own.

I dont know about LANs in other countries but stealing isnt really a problem here. I were on a small lan (only 300 people) and i left my mobile, digital camera and stuff beside my computer, walked away, talked to people... got back... no problems.

I really want to go to a lan outside little Sweden though. Lans here are a huge thing, and i want to find out how it is in the US or the UK.

uhh....lans, as far as my area of the u.s. goes, are not nearly as big as in other countries, we only have one public lan place in the whole state, which really suck, and i don't know of very many kids in my school who even host any, so not so big where i'm from

Some of you never been on a LAN before :O :O :O :O i feel sorry for you and yes ofcourse do you bring your own pc on Lan ;)

Outside of cities here its rather hard to host a LAN party with over a dozen people. Just not enough nerds. :D

Hey, only the cool guys have and go too Lan`s

Only if your have some sort of fetish with rubbing your face on other people's faces.

I have been to many LANS, usually at friends houses. And you call a 300 person lan small? I want to move to Sweden! Anyway, most kids around here spend their time smoking weed or getting drunk, and barely know what a computer is. I have some friends who have some pretty nice lans together. Also, Im blessed to live only 60 miles away from the biggest lan party on the east coast, Lanwar! http://www.lanwar.com . Theyre about to host MillionManLan in a day or two, and about 1500 people are signed up! I wish I could go, but my parents wouldn't let me keep the computer there for 4 days.

Valhalla LAN's are always good fun, good size with between 200-400 people normally iirc. Me and some friends have LAN's at our houses, and there's only about 8 of us at the most normally, but it's all great fun anyway :)

I've been to a couple of LANs with 7+ people. Of those, they were all people who lived in the Topeka area, although one came all the way up from Oklahoma City. They are an extreme blast. The only thing I recommend is bring more network cables than you plan. We had to send someone back to grab some more at least 3 times, because more people kept coming.

My friend and I also do some 2-man-LANs. I just haul my equipment to his house, we set up in about 15 minutes, and are playing and having fun. They are *almost* as fun as larger LANs. If you have a close friend who has a computer (and preferrably high-speed internet) I definately recommend you do this some time. Loads of fun. Just make sure you have some of the same games. Otherwise, it would be fruitless.

Even going to school feels like a lan for me now. Everyone has their own laptop... guess what we do during classes :)

Alec_85: Will you go to Dreamhack Winter 04? Maybe ill see you around :)

Sadly, I haven't been to a LAN party yet.
I use to go to PC cafes with friends all the time though, but the places I've been to really suck ass. Dirty as hell and a lot of them don't even currently have CS 1.6. :(

Actually, we've got a three-computer LAN running non-stop at my house.

I never realised that DM games could be so much fun...

We have about 5 PCs at our house, one of them is going to be replaced and I am going to buy another one for my bro. Usually my friends come over and we can play over the network on 2 computers. That will be changed soon so it's 3 instead...

I've never been to a LAN party but I know they are somewhere around here in MN, I know someone who's been to some...now I gotta find out where.

If you can, buy a case with a lock or put in your own :) Then lug your 300lb 21" monitor because no one can carry it away :)

Also, some advice, replace the screws with non-mainstream screws (i.e. not 4-pronged or flat-head) so you can put your stuff in your case when your away.

Then again, if you know everyone well you should be OK.

Never been to a LAN Party. Everyone I know plays PS2 or X-Box. I have no idea how I would transport everything. My PC weighs about 10 lbs. and my monitor is about 12 lbs. Not to mention the games, my mouse, my keyboard, and all the other jazz. :( Anyone want to invite me to their LAN Party?

EDIT: I do play C & C: Generals over a LAN with my Dad a lot. I wouldn't consider it much of a party. Oh, and we play Desert Combat, StarCraft, and Diablo II together too. :E

I don't know. I would like to (even though I felt rather sick last time I went there) but I don't have any friends that are interested in such huge lans :) Plus it's quite expensive... :(
