Last of the Human Genome mapped

That is so ****ing ridiculous isn't it? Who is selling it? How can property on the moon be sold when it doesn't belong to the seller?
By all earth law they do.
The organisations owns every planet and comet in the universe, completely legally. They sent Nasa a parking bill after one of their probes landed on their comet. Nasa didn't pay up, but is funny all the same.

I'm all for superhumans, especially if it's for engineering humans better suited for space travel.

They couldn't engineer anything better than me no matter how much they tried.

How come you didn't agree with me? I said the same thing. I agree it's good for curing diseases and stuff, but not for transforming humanity drastically in a way nature didn't intend.

D: I totally did
but I just wanted to elaborate further on it.
Genetic engineering is happening right now.

I'm glad I won't have to be alive in the time period where our governments have controlled our genes, mutating us to their desires. I don't want to be a kid who gets born 2000 years from now and gazes out at his surroundings through his 16 eyes, feeling around with his 4 arms and three legs... fluttering around like some kind of freak on wings so far removed from the humanity of his ancestors like some kind of grossly inbred being.

Well iff the government needs any volunteers, im in.
Im personally fascinated that we can do things in 10 years that would take nature 3000 years. Think about it:regenerating limbs, enhanced vision strength and agility, super intelligence. Man was created in the image of god. Why not be god?

We 'have' super intelligence. We just haven't tapped into it all yet.

I'm kinda worried about being able to cure every single human disease etc.. Why?
Because imo the world is overpopulated as is, if we stop dying of diseases etc, then IMO the governments should impose restrictions on the amount of children a family can have etc in order to try and control the flow of children.
Also, I don't like us toying with nature, HOPEFULLY it will end with us destroying ourselves due to our huge ambitions and idiocy.:)

Now, answer this final question, am I a bad person?

As long as we destroy ourselves without destroying the earth in the process, i'm all for it.

Yeah, all you puny humans can die for all I care, but I will rise up into godhood and live on 4evah!:frown:

You'll never achieve godhood with that kind of grammar!

That's exactly the attitude I'm against with this whole genetic engineering thing

Yea, and if you believe that, I've got some beach-front property to sell you on the beaches of Antarctica.

Yea. I've read in a science magazine that soon they can make people live to 150 years old and more, and **** with genes to give super intelligence and greatly improve other aspects.

Don't worry. Our creators put in a fail-safe. We might be forced to have only 1 child (two people producing 1 off-spring = population control), but it won't become so bad. Age decays the living. Eventually they would just crumple into a pile of broken bones and fleshy-tissue.

And for the super intelligence, wouldn't that be ****ing annoying? Ignorance is bliss. I have enough problems in my mind as it is. The more I know, the worse I feel. Seriously. And I'm not but average intelligence or somewhere around there. Can you imagine being so smart that you could practically tell what people are thinking by looking at them? Or knowing that your spouse or lover is cheating on you and not being able to stop thinking about it because you figured it out? It sucks so bad. Sometimes I am able to do these things already. Imagine if you were 5 times smarter. I'm not talking about education, I'm talking about smart, like your brain works 5 times faster. You'd be so annoyed by everyone so feeble, and would have no one to talk to. I'm referring to rich families who pay to have their children have higher intelligence; genes tampering.

we will never be able to get rid of dieseases and such, they too are constantly adapting to the environment around them. I wouldn't be surpised if the first couple of genemodded people got all sorts of new dieseases on top of the ones we already have.

The only reason we wont ever cure disease is because of corrupt drug companies not our own intellect. And Yes, as long as we keep destroying each other our population will be in check. Eventually only the strongest will survive, and then we will have the eutopia we have dreamed of since socrates.

I think most people are completley missing the point of the human genome project. its not to make a perfect human, its to learn more about how we work, where we came from and why we get certain genetic disorders. Actually altering the genes on a significant scale is still many many years in the future, and even then it will require vast amounts of money, and all of that money will go towards curing terminal diseases, not making someone "super-intelligent"

Nobody complained when they vacinated polio or smallpox (except for those crazy "christian scientists") so why should they complain when we cure alzheimers, diabetes and parkinsons?

I don't see anybody here complaining about that. except for the people who expressed concerns about overpopulation.

The first thing the major governments do with genetic engineering is NOT develop super humans. First, they'll make people non-violent, and so easier to handle.

Why have continuous war, which will eventually lead to the destruction of everything, when you can just make sure people don't start anything in the first place?

And thus the masses become slaves. And people support this!

Of course. That's the whole point :p.

Not the perfect vision of world peace, but the only way it'll actually happen.

They can't really alter your genes while you're alive, so I don't think you'll be affected. Just culled.

Humans are becoming increasingly dependent on machines and technology anyway, so evolution may go in a direction where we become physically weaker, and because of this, we'll counter this by engineering ourselves stronger... or alternatively, mix machine and flesh.

The result? We'll become something like the Daleks.

That's just my opinion, a real biologist would probably disagree with all the things we're saying in this thread.

has anyone seen Gattaca?
I do not aprove of this genome mapping thing.

So, were're either going to become Combine or Daleks? Hmmmm, I'd go with Combine.

Well OBVIOUSLY... I'm talking about if I was a future human.

If you were a future human you'd be like:

"Mmmm... Good day. Free thought? What's that? Oooh look - Soylent Green! My fave!"

I just saw the Doom movie which is mainly about the 24th chromosone...WE ARE ALL GONA DIIIEEEEEE!!!!

So much imbalance we've caused. I still say we fork all conventional medicine (slowly progress to natural hygiene). This is kind of the opposite to that though. Poor earth.

If you look at the demographic transition model you'll find that if death decreases, so does the birth rate so furthermore this will actually aid in the population crisis!

Negative, death rate increases because birth rate increases. The reverse has no bearing on anything whatsoever.
Birth rate increases because more people want more babies.
Crisis ensues.

Fine?
Mine?
I guess there's no sense in attempting to be beautifully wrong if I am a noob.

I'm going to go study my geography of birth and death rates now.

Im so sorry :P drunk posting is always a bad idea. However now I can think straight ill inform you that we are both right! Isn't that great.

Yes I've seen that movie, and honestly I think that's where we're going with genetic engineering. Like in the movie, depending on what qualities your parents wanted you to be programed with you will be preselected to a specific category athlete, artist , scientist whatever. Even if you don't like that category the preconceived notion will say that you can't possibly do anything else then what you were preprogrammed into excelling at. Worst thing about this is not everybody will afford it so the society will split into ordinary humans (now considered second class citizens) and genetically enhanced humans. Very nice isn't it:borg: . The only way this is going to work is if they make it available to everyone and use it exclusively to improve our health.
