Leaked build transmitting IP's to NSX.VALVESOFTWARE.COM?????

Ok I've got some info:

Apparently the "other game" that was leaked tries to connect to the net through Steam:

Actual testimony! lol

"btw be warned this bitch tries to connect to the net also it seems to be running with steam"

I checked out what IP HL2 uses when you create a server,

CustName: Project Redwood ISP (AT&T Internal)
Address: 9805 Scranton Road
City: San Diego
StateProv: CA
PostalCode: 92121

AT&T Internal IP.. not gonna post the IP here, and I dunno if the whois info can help anyone identify what HL2 accesses when you create a server, but I doubt it it's logging IPs, looked to me like the IP to list the server on the net.. (It's the same IP HL uses when you create a server)

Shuzer it's not HL2 that connects to the net, it's the "other" game.

HL2 does indeed connect to the internet when you create a server, like I said before, it doesn't when you launch it.. so that's back to my assumption that it's just the master server list being contacted

if your not sure when playing sp hl2, just unhook the ethernet cable when u are playing it

come on people, most of the people downloading the beta/alpha are just curious to see what it's like...

that doesn't mean they won't buy the game when it's out

you think valve is going to sue all those thousands of fans, possible costumers, or ban them from their servers?

Basicly you can't do sh*t with this "beta", it's just a spoiler/sneak preview/remotely "playable" version of what we have seen at e3

The worst are the people who'll warez the final version...

I've heard repeatedly on IRC this evening that the "Anon" copy of the half-life build recently leaked is storing and transmitting copies of vital system information, including IP addresses, to a server which in turn goes to a valve software owned server. If this is true, it's a very intresting development that may result in a whole lot more problems for the individuals who chose to break laws and the gaming communities trust. While I can't ask anyone to test this and post the results, due to the obvious implications, I am intrested if it's true. If anyone else has any info on this, please tack it on.

Cheers.

wow your most excellent plan to stop thousands of ppl downloading is magnificent.

lets just hope no1 on the net has a higher IQ than you and figures out that "news" is bull shit.

I've sniffed and netstated my connection several times while running HL2 sp and it doesn't send any kind of connection to any server.

Now if you attempt to create a server or connect to a multiplayer game that's something different.

If you are truly paranoid just open a command window then start HL2 then Alt-tab out of the game and type "netstat" in the command window. This lists all the active connections from your network connections. The NSX server's IP is 64.81.178.5 so as long as that number doesn't pop up on the list it's not sending any info there.
