We've been waiting patiently for details regarding Left 4 Dead downloadable content and the support it's going to receive from Valve in the coming year. The first release will be called the L4D Survival Pack. It is due for release this spring and introduces a new multi-player game mode, called Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode . A Critic's Choice Edition of the game is also heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.[br]In addition, for PC gamers and aspiring developers, the first Left 4 Dead release for the Source Software Development Kit (Source SDK) will allow the creation of custom Left 4 Dead campaigns that will be discoverable via L4D's matchmaking system. The SDK update is also due for release this spring, and is free of charge to all owners of L4D on the PC.
Since Half-Life launched in 1998, Valve has made continuous efforts to expand the offering of its products beyond what's included on the day of launch. With Half-Life and Counter-Strike, and more recently Team Fortress 2, we've learned that we're no longer making stand-alone games but creating entertainment services. With Left 4 Dead we're extending that tradition by creating additional gameplay and releasing our internal tools to aspiring developers so they may also create and distribute new Left 4 Dead experiences.
Indeed we shall Gabe. Winter is nearing its end.

I assume these 2 new versus mode campaigns are dead air and death toll?

I imagine so.

I wonder what Survival is, then. Cool.

Yes, I'm certain. Although Doug didn't specify, they wouldn't introduce new campaigns which are vs playable only. Before the new vs campaigns are released, we're looking at setting up a HL2.net versus league too, which should be lots of fun!

Will it include Samons falling off rooftops?

Omfg now this is pitiful that the first DLC will be this. Essentially we are getting "how long can you hold out" mode. Then we are getting 2 campaigns we already have only in versus and then finally the SDK. Also it will take a couple of months for this to come out. Valve has been dropping the ball recently. *Btw it took them 3 months to announce this announcement?

it's an easy but bland mode to implement, much like TF2 arena.

We don't know what Survival mode is at the moment and there's always a chance it involves new maps or even new weapons or infected.

survival mode whatever its free right?

They didn't mention anything new and skirmish mode has been in development for years.

Survival Pit

Like there is already a fort building mod for L4D, a hack for the other 2 maps in versus, and you can already do a skirmish mode via console commands.

*Like this is a steampowered user:
To be honest, I am VERY dissapointed.

- 2 new versus maps. Meh, should have been with us from the start...
- 1 new multiplayer mode. Good
- SDK. Should have been with us from the start.

No mention of new campaigns. Nothing at all.

And spring means April-May-June time... Knowing Valve, that could slip further.

VERY VERY VERY DISSAPOINTED.

and another:
This kind of time frame warrants much more content or updates. Wow, you are finally updating two EXISTING campaigns for versus and adding a new game mode to EXISTING campaigns. This is seriously taking serveral months to finish?

The steam forums are always full of moaning, thats why people go there, its hardly shocking.

And what exactly were you expecting? it took a long time for the first TF2 update to come out, then they settled into a regular cycle, I dont see many other companies doing any better, quit whining about it.

This. I think TF2 got it's first update in like May, so I'm very happy about this. Yeah, it took longer than we expected, but it's here and whining about it isn't going to get us more of the high quality DLC that few other companies would offer at all, let alone for free.

Don't forget that Valve are going for a simutatious DLC release on the 360 and PC. We PC owners will have to wait for the 360 version to go though certification which can takes months, even though Steam was supposed to give us new content as they are ready. Overall it's sounds disappointing but i'm sure Valve will give us the good stuff eventually.

I don't see many other companies making any free DLC. While I agree that all of the campaigns should've been versus'd from the start, people really whine too much fomr time to time.

I mean, imagine if (for some wacky reason) the DLC had to purchased with Microsoft points... if you get what I mean.

I always felt TF2 was actually finished when it was released.

L4D has a broken lobby/server system and two maps that don't work with versus.

A house in the middle of nowhere and fend off wave after wave of zombie attacks probably.

Feel like watching Zulu now :D

That would kind of suck. That's basically what you do anyways when you play.

This isn't shocking. I think for Valve this is a big update and I honestly can't wait to play versus on the other campaigns and also custom campaigns.

Where the hell is the Scout Update.

I for one am happy about this. Sure Valve could push out a crappy update that would probably create tons of bugs but I am glad they aren't.

I hope not. GOW had Horde and COD5 had Nazi Zombies, and whilst I'm sure a L4D version would be much better, I'm bored of the concept now.

Haha, you and disrupted should form a club!

It sounds as if it will be some sort of horde mode, but I think there will be more to it than that.

I wish they'd at least focus on getting the SDK out as soon as possible, the game is starting to get very boring with the same 20 maps.

To be honest I don't care how good or bad the DLC is, the game is still fun to play no matter what.

Yeah well everyone one isnt and you arent everyone.

I didn't say everyone was bored of the concept, I didn't say everyone loved the concept either. I quite clearly said I was bored of the 'sit tight in a hole and fight wave after wave of enemies'

I hope it will be free for PC ... otherwise it will be really painfull to all that paid 50$ for the game expecting value of Orange Box.

"Update: Due to a miscommunication, we had updated the original piece saying that PC and Xbox 360 Survival Packs would be paid. However, Valve has since told Edge that it hasn't ruled out the possibility of the price being "$0.00." Sorry for any confusion."

lol, they changed it about two minutes after I posted the link. Good to know it's still free on PC.

I emailed Doug back about 30 mins ago to be completely certain. I'm not sure how Edge got that so very wrong, but I agree something more solid would be nice.

This man speaks the truth.

EDIT:
Also, I'd like to add that to whoever says "Well, it's free so you have no right to complain" I answer: We still have a right to criticize and voice our opinions and the DLC is NOT free, we all paid 50$ a few months ago for it, remember?
