Lighting Issues

I have recenty seen some re-occuring issues with lighting on games "made for" nVidia cards. (ie Far Cry, and Deus Ex 2) My fear is that maybe this isn't a game engine issue and that Half-Life 2 is going to be hit with the same artifacts. From what I hear people in other forums are getting pissed at the fact that these game engines are leaning more towards one single card manufarturer and that for some games patches are not being released to fix these "issues".

Each time you enter a room with "realtime" lighting (running on a 9800pro) these black dots appear. In Far Cry, they appear wherever the swinging lights are at in the second demo, in Deus Ex 2 they appear all over at a distance.

My questions and concerns are, will these issues ever be "fixed" for ATi users? Will Half-Life 2 experince the same issues, or will it run better for ATi users? I would rather enjoy nice lighting, than have to turn off my advanced shadows or high lighting effects. ;(

I had a simmilar issue, i threw some heatsinks on my 9800 pro's ram and a fan above it and it fixed the dot problems.

I know heating is not an issue, the artifacts appear on most ATi cards. Plus I weighted mine down pretty good with ramsinks and a Brick Cooler, so it's keepin cool now

But that issue just keeps bugging me, and so far it has only appeared in 2 games "made for" nVidia? I have troubleshooted it quite a bit, thinking maybe AA of multisampling may have something to do with it. Nope. Only if I turn off advanced shadows do they dissapear, then the game just sux. I did hear that Deus Ex 2 left out alot of ATi features like multisampling and such, I wonder if Far Cry is doing the same, except for something else like Filtering? ;(

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about... I've seen this in both the Doom 3 Alpha and Halo, I had my card overclocked at the time, putting it back at stock/better cooling fixed my problem.

I hadn't even made the TWIMTBP issue, but that's true. HL2 shouldn't have these issues, seeing as how the game is backed by ATi, and it won't be TWIMTBP

Yeah, Halo ran fine for me no artifacts of any kind, as for Doom 3 alpha, um, haven't tried it let alone I didn't know there was one? I will also look into that OC issue, I am running a Sapphire 9800pro, it utility is a little different for OC'ing, but I will check and see if it is OC'ing behind my back. :p

Using AA/AF? try without?
If it's heat and just dots, that is most likely the core (rather than memory).

I know AA & AF cause problems in both Far Cry and DX2 with ATi cards...

I have a 9600 and don't get any dots.

OK, this sux, now I have to start over. A few days ago I disabled AA/AF and for some reason it didn't work, I still got the artifacts. Today, er as of last minute, I disabled them again, them being # of samples and FSAA mode. Last time I never set FSAA mode to App Pref so it was always on reguardless of having no settings.

Now everything is spick and span, thanks!
