So this morning around 9am CST, I go to turn on my computer to start working on stuff. Well instead of hearing the short little POST tone, Beep!, I heard Beeeeeeeeeeeep. It wouldn't stop the long POST beep untill I held down my power button for 10 seconds (to manually power the system down). I didn't have my monitor on at the time so I don't know what, if any, information was on the screen. I am reluctant to turn the computer on again, for fear that I am going to do further damage. The computer is a little more than a half a year old (built for Sept. 30th).

Some usefull information that might be helpful in a diagnosis. If there is any other information that you think might prove usefull in determining what's wrong then by all means ask:
You can see my computer spec's in my sig to get an idea of what the system is. I was running XP Pro with all of the latest drivers.

Sometimes when I would start up the computer, before windows would load, I would get a message. It was something about Serial Presence Detect and that my Ram would be bupped down to 333mhz (instead of the normal 400mhz).

Also everynow and then, I would boot the computer and when it got to windows, there would be these wierd bars going down in collums. If I restarted the computer 90% of the time the bars would go away and everything would function normally.

I also defrag the harddrive that windows is on, about 3 times a day. I'm not sure if this could cause excess wear on the drive, but I thought I should mension it incase y'all know something I don't.

Everything in the computer was new, except for: the soundcard (was a friends), the two hard drives, the power supply, floppy and cd rom drives (all from the computer I used to use). The PSU is a 330W from my old computer and while I was building the new one (which is giving me the long POST tone) I was concerned that the PSU was not powerful enough.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I could not have built this computer with out the generosity and knowledge that you guys gave me on this board while I was building it. I really don't have that much knowledge of building computer hardware, so you guys are my one hope. Thanks again.

Do you have the manual for your motherboard? or could you post the name of it?
In the manual is a list of what all the beeps mean. That could help you to figure out the problem.

Also you say that you get those wierd bars when you start windows? that souns like a graphics card issue, like it's overheating.

But I have no idea about what would cause that ram thing, thats just wierd imo.

Reseate your memory, video card as well as your Keyboard.
I would take out any PCI cards or other USB devices and basicly try to start it with only the basic hardware.

the-milk-man (12:38:25 PM): I also defrag the harddrive that windows is on, about 3 times a day. <---crazy
Quad5Ny13 (12:42:44 PM): you defrag you hd 3 times a day?
the-milk-man (12:42:47 PM): no
Quad5Ny13 (12:42:49 PM): *your
the-milk-man (12:42:54 PM): some guy on the forums said that
the-milk-man (12:42:55 PM): lol
the-milk-man (12:44:09 PM): http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=23799
Quad5Ny13 (12:45:46 PM): what a dick
Quad5Ny13 (12:46:00 PM): all he has to do is re-seat his video card and his ram
the-milk-man (12:46:12 PM): shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
the-milk-man (12:46:19 PM): we must let the loser buy more
Quad5Ny13 (12:46:23 PM): for good measure i would take out the cpu and re-insert that too
the-milk-man (12:46:30 PM): yeah I was thinking that too myself
Quad5Ny13 (12:46:51 PM): then again i dont exactaly remember what all the post beeps are
the-milk-man (12:46:52 PM): I got an error like that with a video card
Quad5Ny13 (12:47:02 PM): so it may be the power supply
the-milk-man (12:47:02 PM): put it back in pushed harder
the-milk-man (12:47:04 PM): went it
the-milk-man (12:47:12 PM): well hell, you don't defrag 3 times a day
Quad5Ny13 (12:47:26 PM): defraging shouldent effect anything
Quad5Ny13 (12:47:33 PM): even if you do do it 3 times a day
Quad5Ny13 (12:47:37 PM): which is dumb
the-milk-man (12:47:58 PM): I don't see how, you will be fixing anything when you do it in that short period of time
Quad5Ny13 (12:48:25 PM): the kids anal
Quad5Ny13 (12:48:26 PM): =P

this is sort of silly but it happens to me too... press all the keys on your keyboard, then power the computer on (making sure that no keys are depressed). i dont know, just something you ought to try.

I don't know what my bios is. I looked through the manual twice to try and find which it uses and on the Intel website for my board ( http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bz/ ) and couldn't find anything.

Also does reseate mean just taking out my memory modules and graphics card and then sticking them back in?

Thanks for the help Asus.

I was reading in my mobo manual and it says this:
A repeating beep error code is heard and the desktop board does not boot or show any video

This beep code may indicate a problem during the detection of the DDR SDRAM memory device. Check to ensure that system memory is properly installed and that the DIMMs meet the memory module requirements...

Kinda seems like a trend with the RAM crapping out? Yes no?

Also about defragging: Demanding top performance and obbsession go hand in hand when you're dealing with anything. I do alot of work with extremely large photoshop files and I do a lot of saving and editing through out the day. It's a real pain to be working in photoshop and having things lag behind because your drive cant keep up. I ussually defrag once while I'm working. Once before I run a game. and right before I go to bed while I'm brushing my teeth. I guess not knowing about computers makes me "un-cool" or something. Sorry.

Well I took out my video card and stuck it back in and flipped the slots my memory modules were in and took out my sound card and everything started up ok. I'll power down plug the rest of the cords in and my soundcard and see what happens.

yes, just pull out your memory sticks and put them back in. Do the Same thing with your graphics card. While you are in your computer, make sure you check all of your power cables and IDE/Floppy cables to see if they are secure.

~~

For your harddrive need, you should consider getting a second harddrive for RAID 0. That would increase the speed of your harddrive considerably.

Everything is working great. Thanks guys. Post from the computer I was having troubles with

Ok well now I have no sound... this is screwy

Do the same with it, infact do it to every pci/agp card you have too. :)

I took out the soundcard and just booted up the system so that I could test it with the bare components. I then turned the power off and put it back in and plugged everything back in. and Now i have no sound. Reseat it again?

sure try that again.

You know you have to ground yourself before going into your computer, right?

by rubbing a metal part on the case right? like the frame?

yes

You may want to see if your PSU is the problem. I know you said it is old, it could be going bad.
