I was looking around the MSDN website today and I came across these videos. I am warning you they are extremly boring but some of the features in longhorn are just amazing if you are involved in, realestate, healthcare, financial services, educations, telecom, manufacturing, and governemt. (yes I watched them all) Here is the Link

It looks like you will be able to install programs and run them instantly. Or something along those lines.

Those lucky bastards that are parts of the MSDN already have acess to longhorn and can download it anytime they want.

The new interface looks really cool. Its nice to see a darker iterace for a change. It looks like they have shrunk the side taksbar. I hope the side bar doesnt screw around with my websites, because they are all coded for 1024x768.

The education video will probably apply to most of your guys lives, it had some really cool features, the instant messaging was only of my favorites. I also like the fact that for a math class if the the teacher puts a formula into the document you can add in the numbers buy yourself to get the calculation. It would be nice for when im doing my homework if I could create a document with all the formulas on it and then instead of having to write everything out buy hand I could just let the computer do the work for me. (im in a physics class so this would save me alot of time)You could create formulas in microsoft excell at the moment but I always found it to difficult. Now alot of the things in this video look very cool, but if the average user isnt able to do some the of things shown in the video with ease then microsoft might as not put the features in.

Alot of the things in those video's look very, very cool but im a little worried about privacy. Microsoft has made it easy to communicate between virtually anyone, and if you are not careful you may grant access to folders on your pc. On windows xp it was as easy and clicking do not share folder, but with longhorn it looks like it will be more difficult. For home users I dont think this will be much of a problem unless you are connected to a VPN or something like that. But for libraryies, or anything mentioned above, such as healthcare, or realestate it might become a problem. Microsoft looks like they are doing some things about it like only granting people administative rights to a folder for set number of days, and you have to be a verified user (or something along those lines). Im guessing with longhorn we will start to see viruses and worms like mad appearing all over the place. And with all the communication going on it will be a hackers playground. So I really hope microsoft really put alot of effort into security.

If anyone else has some information on longhorn please post it.

God I wish I was part of the MSDN. ;(

EDIT: I also found this website. It may be old news but some of the stuff still looks cool.

whens it coming out? Does any one know?

Actually I heard they will be realising a public beta client on march 19 2005. So only time will tell.

This list shows that microsoft will be releasing a longhorn beta client in 2005.
http://bink.nu/?ArticleID=3126

They announced last year sometime that they would be realising the beta on march 19 2005, and with that list saying that there would be a beta in 2005 then I can assume it would come sometime in the next 3 months.

Just some other internesting things is there is xbox 2 release with a question mark beside it, and apparnatly microsoft will be releasing a mouse with a figerprint reader. Oh and they appear to be finally launching their new msn search engine I have heard about.

No its 32 bit and 64 bit, I heard they are dropping everything else though.

EDIT:here is the msn search beta, http://beta.search.msn.com/?qb=1 (Look almost exactly like google except i can search my desktop, but google. is releasing a client for that also)

My goal in life will to lose all dependencies on windows, and use Linux for everything by the time Longhorn unleashes its evil.

Wow...you're gonna suck at life then. :p

I find it funny are getting ate up about MS locking down on us warezing and shit.

You cant walk into a shop and take what you want off the shelf for free, so dont expect todo it online either.

And as windows has always done it will push hardware into new goodness :D

What are you talking about Tr0n, It's for the win.

Since when did Linux and life suckage become one? I am sorry, but with that attitude you'll be behind.

I was joking. :|

hmmm.... longhorn seems, to me, like it will just be a graphical overhaul of XP. No WinFS. :/

Comeon, drop support of win95/98 already, start making more stable software. I mean, if it's that important to run 95/98 apps, do what Apple did and make a "classic mode" that runs on a seperate, small, partition or something.

No winfs will still be in longhorn it will just be added with a service pack in 2006.

Microsoft said longhorn is going to be one of their major operating system releases, so dont expect them to cut to many things. Longhorn looks like it is improving on alot of things that I already like in windows xp, and im curious to see what microsoft is doing with the next internet explorer and the windows graphical foundation.

I still am unclear as to whether I will be able to finally install programs without having to restart windows.

longhorn for me also !
and the screen "realestate" is too big

Let me preface this statement by saying that I've never had an OS on my comp other than Windows.

There's still something ironic to be said about conversing excitedly about a new Windows release. I mean, come on, it's a Microsoft OS. We'll still be cursing MS one year from now. Just you wait....

are any of you guys actually gonna walk into a shop on the day of its release and pay £120 for your own copy?
what a bloody rip.
ive never bought an OS, neither my dad. before u think anything, we use them that coem with our PCs, and my dads got some MSDN kit, pretty sweet, i got all that power and i dont use it. i should start

THat article about that fritz chip and what not, all I have to say is everything EVERYTHING that comes out will somehow get cracked. I know not EVERY person on this forum has all their software legal. I used to have a hacked XP Pro, now I have an OEM Pro. I used to have a hacked Office 2003, now I have 100% legal 2003 (thanks to the place I work :D) But most of every other software I have, I have gotten "free". The anti-piracy thing will get tougher and tougher such as Valve's HL2 anti-piracy measures. (I bought my HL2) but I have friends that have a hacked HL2, but they don't get all the goodies (Garry's mod, etc..) THe only point I really have is that yes it's good to pay for your stuff but...why would you pay a BUTTLOAD of money for a photo editing program? (Adobe CS)
