First, thanks in advance to anyone who helps me out. I consider myself pretty good with computers but I can't solve my problem: A few weeks ago i lighting storm fried my HD. It was starting up the comp when the power went out. I bought a new HD, and installed Windows XP Home on it wihtout a hitch. Now, whenever I start up the comp, it freezes at the welcome screen. I started it once in safe mode by accident (i dont know what i did) and it started fine (for safe mode at least). Any help? I'd like to get up and running before HL2....

Does anyone know the difference between safe mode and normal start up so I could try to investigate the problem a bit? Thanks in advance.

It could be that some of your other hardware is fried. Safe mode doesn't use hardware when u go into it, so it doesnt use your hardware so that u can fix problems that hardware might be experiencing. So something else could be fried in your com of just try reinstalling windows again.

Is there any software or physical indication of which it might be?

I know you guys can do better than this..... Please don't make me dismantle my computer part by part to see whats not working..... ubless thats what you think i should do...
