An international team of scientists has recorded neutrino particles traveling faster than the speed of light, a spokesman for the researchers said on Thursday -- in what could be a challenge to one of the fundamental rules of physics.

Antonio Ereditato, who works at the CERN particle physics center on the Franco-Swiss border, told Reuters that measurements over three years showed the neutrinos moving 60 nanoseconds quicker than light over a distance of 730 km between Geneva and Gran Sasso, Italy.

Really? If they've actually broken the speed of light, why would that necessarily be a good thing?

For one, my degree would be worthless

But for serious. If this were true, a lot of stuff that is known about science would probably become bullshit. So I kind of hope it isn't. I like science the way it is.

If it is true, then yeah I agree this will be the first practical application, not interstellar spacecraft.
For example real time communication between NASA and a robot on Mars.

I think it's pretty definite by now, that at the atomic scale and upward, you can't travel faster than light. At the sub-atomic level and below, it was always assumed the rules would carry over. Maybe for some reason a nuetrino can't gain mass as it apporaches the speed of light?
