Making a computer

I am afraid to mess it up, I have never made a computer before. I have opened my pre-made computer up and fixed it and upgraded it but never assmebled it. I also have the PC gamer guide to building a PC....I wonder if that will help at all....
I am not sure....whatever the best is for price....2800 sounds nice.

I don't even know what a thermal pad or compound is...lol. I assume it is somthing to attach somthing to somthing else....probably the mobo and cpu.
Also, I depside ebay so I will just buy the cpu and mobo seperate...what is it I have to look for and make sure they are the same?

its a compound thats on the bottum of the heat sink, you put it on the top of the processer and it transfers heat to the heat sink :)

yea, thats almost the same as A7N8X

just make sure that the socket is socket A

I am a newbie, how do I do that?
Also the onboard audio looks pretty crappy...
Onboard Audio: Realtek ALC650 6-Channel Codec

heh, i might get a sound card but its been fine for me, and it should say what proc/socket it is on the box/title.

Im asuming this is a gamer cpu? 2800 is fine then, the fastest is 3200 which is olny about 400 mhz faster, you can oc to that speed anyway.

You are correct, this is a gaming PC. Anyone have any suggestions on headphones?

Wow, those are cheap actually...for supporting 5.1. My friend bought headphones that cost more thrn $150 and they didnt support 5.1. Did the onboard audio support 5.1? Also, I just noticed you could add a mic attachment to the headphones, it is any good?

I also need a CD and DVD drive...any recomendations?

wow, thats a lot for head phones, i didnt get the mic, i didnt even notice it heh.

Oh hehe, I guess I will get the mic just because it is so cheap. Thanks again for the links.

Ohhh, 9/10 pimp hats. They got a nice review. Also, the plug is a 3 headphone jack....where would that fit into? I don't think the onboard would support that....

it needs a 5.1c sound card (center, front and rear)

Wow, almost forgot about a monitor...I have no idea about the quality of monitors I just want somthing cheap and that looks good.

yeha, everything supports headphones... :p

also, the A7N8X -X is a decent mobo, but it doesn't support dual channel ram.... looks at the Abit NF7.

Err, can you provide a link to newegg of that mobo? I am horrible at searching because I can't find it.

That ram won't work with that processor. I think its pc-2100 that you need but I coulb be wrong.

Woa I sure hope not...can anyone confirm this?

You need PC2700 (DDR333) to run the XP 2800+. Getting PC3200 is a waste (and could possibly be slower than matching RAM) unless you plan on overclocking the 2800's FSB

The RAM speed needs to match the FSB of the processor

Oh ok thanks for the info Shuzer, I will fix it then....how do I match it up?

This is what I have...
Western Digital Special Edition 120GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD1200JB, OEM Drive Only
Kingston 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700 - OEM
ASUS nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "A7N8X-X" -RETAIL
Enlight ATX 420W P4 Power Supply, Model "EN-8420934" -RETAIL
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ " Barton", 333MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail
SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800 PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-

What does OEM mean?

Original equipment manufacturer
Basically means it'll come as is when it was manufactured, no box/instructions/etc.. on the flip side, it's usually cheaper than retail

Anyhow, sounds like all of those components will work fine together :)

Damn, OEM....is that safe? Anways, anything you could think of to upgrade that wouldn't cost much money? I still have a to wait a few weeks before I even start buying all this stuff so I have a lot of time to change stuff.

So when they ship it to me it will come in a box? With an anti static bag? Or how will it come?
