Mario Galaxy 2 hype thread (with Edge review)

Exactly. The basic idea behind it - an island vacation gone wrong, and you get to use a water jetpack - could have been a great Mario game. But it tried too hard to integrate the stages and the story, where everything ended up as an environmental or architectural or design showpiece, or it focused too much on relatively tacked-on gameplay like the cleanup aspect. Plus Mario was difficult to control, and so was the jetpack.

I didn't really care about the story. At all. Nor did I care about it in Galaxy 1. Because it's a Mario game. Platforming at its finest.

An enemy who can only make it over tricky jumps if he has a jet pack to make it easy does not scare me!

Nintendo got it so right with the void levels - what happened to the rest?! It's like they outsouced the main levels Naughty Dog :rolling:

I never played Sunshine, Warbie. But Super Mario Bros. 2 was one of the best games of my youth, so you can just stay across that line you've drawn.

He wasn't talking about the story per se. Also:

Platforming at its finest.

I will not hesitate to troll this thread into a whole new world of derailed. That is how badly that game dissapointed me.

Oh god guys. I picked up my copy. I told myself I'd play for twenty minutes. I look at the clock. Four hours have gone by. Oh god.

*puts fingers in ears*

lalala I can't hear you!

Damn euro release.

I've got about 40 stars so far. Haven't really had much of a challenge yet, but then I remember some of the last levels in SMG. Lots of fun regardless.

Ya I'm extremely tempted to get galaxy 2 I really enjoyed the first game. But MGS peace walker comes out in a week so I gotta save. But damn galaxy 2 is getting a lot of perfect to almost perfect scores all across the board.

65 stars. So much freaking fun. Some of the comets are pretty tough.

There's an edit button for a reason, slow down on the double-posting. Not trying to be mean, just helping you avoid infractions.

I was gonna order the peace walker PSP set but decided against it.

Guess what just fell through the post! :E

Where is everyone?!!

Only two galaxies in and so far Galaxy 2 is stunning. If the first 4 hours are anything to judge by then this is a serious contender for game of the .. ever.

There are four or five comets that nearly made me cry with their greatness.

Up to 123 stars myself. There were some very satisfyingly difficult levels (wall-jumping with shadow clones chasing you). I hardly had any trouble with any level in SMG1 but there were levels I lost 10-20 lives on in this. Loved it :)

I can tell these green stars are going to be a bitch on later levels.

Sold my wii, so will not be getting this.

PSP and games that will last me longer instead.

You've finished now, Sheepo?

I finished the first 120 stars and I'm taking a break for a while. I don't understand what the deal is with the green stars, could be fun.

After the main 120 stars, there are 120 more green stars hidden across the levels that you can track down. It seems that you mainly find them by going to hard-to-reach places or by listening for the twinkle of the nearby star and try and locate it that way. This must be the part of the game where one particular reviewer said he spent 4 hours and didn't get a star.

That should make for some pretty sweet exploration. Mario 64 nonlinearity, or atleast the illusion of it.

Just got 120 stars today before leaving for work. The ending confuses me:

If this is supposed to be a direct sequel, why does the ending feel more like a prequel, with Mario not yet having met Rosalina? I hope there's more after you get the other 120 stars.

The more I played this game, the more I found myself wanting to play Mario 64 again. As fun as they are, the galaxy games just don't quite match up to it. I really miss the expansive levels, which each offered a lot of exploration. 100 coin stars were also a lot of fun. Having the whole castle as a hub was great. I really hope the next 3D Mario revisits this formula.
