Mario Kart Wii lookin sweet

awesome: a word invented for describing mario kart, adj.

Finally, Another reason to own a Wii. Is it sad the only reason I want one is [5 of] the franchise games?

controls: the kart will automatically drive itself while players press the A and B buttons when prompted.

Marioparty Wii sucked (compared to the others)
Warioware Wii sucked (compared to the others)
Mario Galaxy was ok but got a little dull after a while
Zelda on the Wii was the same as the GC ver. with clunkier controls
Papermario on the Wii was meh...

I'm just underwhelmed by the Wii, and I bought one second shipment (post christmas)... I was so excited, and hyped for nintendos new control system... but there are only so many wii sports clones you can get away with before you say, wow these controllers are utter shit when used with any real game that requires precise controls.

(going off screen or just out of sensor bar range is SO #@$@# annoying)

I really hope they step up with some good new titles, so far everything feels gimped. Much like any game on PS3 forced to use the motion sensor. In theory it sounds great, in practice, its horrible.

I haven't played a Mario Kart game since the N64 version ... but it doesn't look like I've missed much. Honestly this looks like the exact same game I remember. That ice level isn't even changed AT ALL. Did they just go to sleep for a decade, wake up, and re-release the same game? The only change I saw was now it has bikes...

I'm sure it'll be a good game, I mean I know it is ... I played it a long time ago and rather liked it. But come on ... the lack of innovation or even basic evolution is astounding.

Can someone please explain to me why I'm wrong? All I know of the game is what I just saw in those videos.

The tracks look really dull, there is nothing going on in the environment.

I'm not to impressed

It looks like Mario Kart. That's all I can really say :/

Aye. Galaxy is simply stunning and Zelda controls better than ever before.

I can't wait to get some mates round for Mario Kart and SSMB sessions. Gaming just doesn't get anymore fun than that :)

QFT

I do not understand the wanking from some on this forum over Mario Kart on each Nintendo platform. It is the same exact game it always has been. You are gladly buying the same title over and over again, and you are liking it.

Sure, it's kinda fun. But it's not exactly fantastic or anything. Especially once you learn that the games PUNISH you for doing well.

Tbh the only innovative Mario title after 64 was Galaxy. All of the spinoff titles have been either crap or depressingly simplistic in the gameplay department.

Mario Kart has always shone in multiplayer. It's one of those games like Golden Eye, Bomberman, Smash Bros. etc that comes alive when you've got a bunch of mates round and provides near endless hours of enjoyment.

With each iteration the series has changes enough to keep things exciting. The original plays quite differently to MK 64 and the DS version, which was easily one of the better games released that year, falls somewhere in the middle. The similarities are always there (comfortablly familair rather than lame rehash), but the games never feel tired. It also shows a distinct lack of having actually played these games at any length to call them crap or simplistic.

Mario Kart with a bunch of friends is FANTASTIC, and now we can play it online too :)

Man, I have no idea what some of you are smoking if you watched those videos/ played previous games and still dont think this game looks fun/ improved

I for one will be buying it as soon as it comes out, and playing both with friends irl and online with people too :D

This looks fun, but I don't know if I could play it enough to justify the purchase.

This. Even Yahtzee said the same thing.

This. Although everyone here knows by now I hate nintendo :p

How can you hate nintendo, they have made some of the best games created so far, and helped to establish video games in general, especially when it comes to bringing them out of geek specific territory and into your average home

What do you not like about nintendo :/

Generally the fact that they never really do anything new with their franchises and I've never really like mario or zelda (I don't mind metroid). Oh and I find Zelda OOT to be one of the most overrated forms of media ever to have been created.

Generally the fact that they never really do anything new with their franchises ...

Are you smoking crack? :)

Follow Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc from their NES beginnings to the present day and name a single other franchise that has evolved as much. Not only do Nintendo do more with their franchises than pretty much anyone else, they keep churning them out. F-Zero, Star Fox, Pilot Wings, SSB, Wave Race, Pikmin, 1080, Mario Kart/Golf/Tennis etc etc - all great games.

they keep churning them out

yeah that's partly the problem. Look at the sheer amount of constant spin offs.

Also I wouldn't say they have changed or evolved that much. I liked the nes and snes days but apart from the jump to 3d there hasn't been a great change except in metroid IMO and not for the better.

What is the last nintendo game you actually owned and played more than once

There are more to them than looks and features, you've gotta play them to understand why they are so fun and held in such high regard

How can churning out franchises be a bad thing when they're all so different and of this quality? (I'm starting to suspect you haven't played most of these games). Spin-offs are a different matter, yet many of these have been refined over the years and become great franchises in their own right. Mario Kart is a prime example.

Also I wouldn't say they have changed or evolved that much.

That's just crazy talk! These games defined their respective genre in 2d and 3d.

Some people like me, like familiarity. So I like this game. Even if I did buy MK 64, which I didn't, it would have been over ten years ago. I haven't even played Double Dash.
Some people like Lambda, don't like familiarity apparently.
This game was not made for you.

Some people like Lambda, don't like familiarity apparently

I think some people fail to distinguish between familiarity and lame rehashes. Familiarity is great - it gives a sense of history, heritage. Games like Zelda are made better by every game in the series that preceeded. The skill is in keeping the experience feeling new and exciting - which is what Nintendo are the masters of.

Like that half-pipe bullshit seems pretty new and exciting. On one hand, it looks really gay and gimmicky, on the other hand, you aren't colliding with invisible walls. I say fantastic.

Because they're not radically different and it doesn't matter to me if they are of that quality cos I still don't like them.

I keep playing all the different iterations of Mario Kart in order to see if there will ever be one that someone can beat me at. OOH FIGHTEN WORDS

This is probably only the 4th proper incarnation of Mario Kart since 1992, which isn't many considering there are plenty of bigger rehashes around - Call of Duty 4 (Allied Assault 5?) and Halo 3. Handheld versions have generally been ports of previous console versions.

I didn't mean mario kart specifically but things like mario party 8 anyone?

Mario party is the exception, not the rule, it's the only nintendo game that comes out like yearly. Even Mario Party isn't that bad when you think about things like football games and the sims expansion packs

Have you even played mario party anyway? It's actually a really really fun game

Mario Galaxy was ok but got a little dull after a while
Zelda on the Wii was the same as the GC ver. with clunkier controls

Are you outside your mind?!

Zelda controls infinitely better on the Wii and Mario Galaxy only got better and better as you go along.

That's probably because:

Mario Kart Wii will feature at least 32 tracks: 16 old-school from the series' past, as well as 16 original, made-for-the-Wii courses never seen before.

I dunno whether to be sad that there aren't more new tracks or happy that smwScott just got owned.

Lol j/k.

I said in the post that all I knew about the games was from the videos and I specifically asked someone to tell me why I was wrong, and he did on that point. I'm not trying to deride or derail the game, I like Mario Kart.

He didn't "own" me, nor do I get the impression he was trying to...

You got OWNED

I do wish they'd put in more classic tracks though. 16 new levels is good enough for entirely new courses but I feel like nintendo has a good enough selection to put in more old school.

If they don't put in the '64 beach level i'm gonna be pissed.

Gameplay wise it doesn't seem like a huge departure from Mario Kart DS. Snaking sounds as though it's become an intended skill to learn, rather than a lame exploit, and there's more possibilities to boost, which can only be a good thing. I suspect the kings of Mario Kart Wii will be those that master big chains of boost combos and blast themselves around tracks like a greyhound with exploding flatulence :)
