Mass Effect trailer

Someone explain to me what's so exciting about Mass Effect please.

looks pretty cool

I'll wait for the pc version though

You serious, here look.

Bioware + RPG = Award winning, extravagant experience.

Did you play Baldur's Gate? Or KOTOR? Or Jade Empire?

Played all those with the exception of Jade Empire, and loved them. But I can't really find anything that seems particularly interesting about Mass Effect from the media.

That trailer is cheesy as fuck. It couldn't possibly fit more movie clich?s in there.

Some screenshots look lovely, but I agree somewhat about the footage - a little bland in places. The reason to get excited is simply becuase it's a Bioware game. If Mass Effect was being made by any other developer none of us would be giving it the time of day.

I would :P
As I love epic sci fi, and rpgs, and I'm not that keen on star wars, this looks great.

Also reminds me of an old game I played ages ago.

looks great :)

I think it's meant to be a little b-movieish. I'm sure I read their art direction was meant to be towards older sci-fi, stuff like the original Battlestar Galactica. If that's the case a little cheese can't hurt.

Hell, as long as the story is just as powerful as their other games, and the game just as involving, I doubt I'll even notice tbh :P

KOTOR was boring, tbh. This trailer wasn't all that awesome either. Except when he threw the dude in the air then shot him.

The trailer doesn't get me hyped at all, though I am still pretty damn hyped about this game because I LOVE Bioware. I am very confident that the actual game will be MUCH better than this lousy cinematic trailer....

Maybe we'll finally get an awesome enemy..he certainly has the personality.

game dont interest me that much but looks very good graphically

Because it's being made by arguably the best rpg developer in the industry.

Agreed. I have high hopes for this game. I'm really excited about the conversation system which looks more like interacted in-game cut-scenes. Most RPGs have the rare cut-scene, but have text for more conversation. This could take simple stuff as talking to a whole new extreme.

I'm not so certain how the combat will work out, but Bioware really hasn't disappointed me so far so we'll see.

I actually liked that trailer. Haven't really followed this much, but the trailer got me interested. Might check it out when its released :)

The conversation video from last E3 is what really got me interested. Thats something I've never seen done well before.

It look so ****ing cheesy and corny. Eww. I think that's the same trailer. Graphics look lovely, but it isn't my type of game so I won't bother.

That suprises me. Plot and story wise Bioware games tend to be top of the pile. I thought you liked that stuff.

I do like plot/story stuff, but that was really cheesy. Don't you think? Also, I put gameplay first, and I'm just not too sure Mass Effect is going to be my thing.

Wow, I hadn't seen this. Before this my attitude was quite similar to Samon's in that as much as I love a good RPG, the sci-fi aesthetic and cheesiness really didn't appeal.

Having seen this I can appreciate it a hell of a lot more. I love that they're putting so much emphasis on both a) dialogue and b) exploration. Sure, it has a kind of b-movie feel, but once you realise that that's intentional then it's a lot easier to swallow.

The combat and Mako vehicle gameplay bits didn't really set me on fire, but that could be because they didn't take the time in the vid to explain quite why you were shooting up these generic drones, and what significance the combat had to the story - or whether it's just taken as read that you discover a random planet, take to the surface and then start shooting.

I'm also interested in knowing whether interrupting characters in convo is purely a feature for convenience or whether it will affect their reaction to you.

Anyway, if this is as deep as it's seeming at the moment, then it might be worth me getting a 360 for...

The actual combat/gameplay usually comes second for me in an rpg - I like to be swept along in deeds of epic proportion. What excites me is the proposition of decent, realtime combat with all the behind the scenes management, customisation and involved story/plot typical of rpgs. It's a blending of genre - something we're bound to see more of in this and future generations. The pause and strategise side of gameplay will be there, along with group management, planets to explore, 100 of characters to talk to. Should be neat. I do see what you mean about the trailer, but don't find it cheesey enough to detract from my excitement. Trailers are often cheesey.

It sounds like there's some real depth to the Mass Effect universe - there's already a book out - which is something we haven't had for quite a while. Being the first part of a trilogy means this could be the start of something great :)

There's one developer vid that touches on this. They mentioned being able to time when you interrupt and the affect it may have. I'm hoping it could start a fight for being rude :)

Watching that video was was like eating sugar-coated corn dipped in cheese, and I want more.

Sounds like Shephard got a promotion? Maybe a new gig from the G-Man? :dork: I like the fact that they're staying with the stock FPS theme of "alien invasion with intent to destroy humanity, and you're on the case". This never gets old. The graphics were pretty, but the animation was, well, I can't put my finger on it, but something's amiss. I hope that choir music isn't in the game - it's been so overused. It's on Everybody Loves Raymond ffs.

First off, Saren (the main antagonist) is only in control of the Geth, and he wants to wipe out humanity for personal reasons. The real threat to the entire galaxy are the Reapers, aliens everyone's not even sure exist or not. Everyone needs to stop assuming this is an episode of Flash Gordon just by watching a TRAILER (keyword there being ****ing trailer, its supposed to highlight cool points)

I think the designs are top notch; reminiscent of iillustrator/designer syd mead

you may recognize his work from bladerunner

I think the key thing the detractors are missing out on here is how high Bioware are raising the bar in terms of adding life and immersion to the whole RPG thing, especially with the NPCs. This game is a major leap forward from KoToR, Jade empire, Oblivion or Stalker when it comes to NPC behaviour and interaction. Sure the cheesy Sci-fi setting might not appeal to everyone, but that's just the genre choice for this particular game. I watch these trailers and I wish that it was Bioware releasing Fallout 3 rather than Bethesda tbh..:dozey:

I'm not hyped. It all looks like one big sci-fi clich?, game design is just random.

I bought Jade Empire "just because it's a Bioware game", and I'll never do THAT again since that was such a pile of trash. Baldur's Gate II is the only thing they've really done right, with the Hordes of the Underdark expansion for Neverwinter Nights being the closest they've come to a good game since then really. And now they're doing this console-only garbarge... nice one.

Reading this game's Wikipedia article is what really caught my attention...yet another reason to buy a 360 if I wasn't going to be so busy over the next year.
