Max Payne 3

I was going to paste the following quote 5 times:

Let's all judge the game based on the concept art on an unreleased issue of Game Informer

... until I thought for about 5 minutes and asked myself, how on earth is the style going to feel the same with this dramatic change of setting?

Max Payne isn't only about the thousands of bullets going every which way.

Hopefully the story makes sense, but as mentioned before, the mood will probably completely change.

I was posting about Max Payne on hl2.net. Funny as hell, it was the most horrible thing I could think of.

Wow, this really doesn't look like a Max Payne game at all.
But, I'm sure it'll have fun gameplay.

Bullet time ftw.

Huh, how does that even look like Max Payne, what happened to the noir style?

Cut out the parts where it says "Max Payne 3" and "Rockstar" and the Max Payne theme from the beginning and ending of the trailer and I would have no way of telling that this is another game in the series.

Actually looking pretty good, looking forward to this.

I agree. It looks good, but it doesn't exactly look like Max Payne. Thank god the music is still there.

It's looks god-awful. Anyone interested in this should shoot themselves. Payne & Lynch.

Everything about it is wrong. If they called it something different (without Max Payne in the title) then I wouldn't be bothered.

Looks fun, I'm excited. It better be decent on PC.

Lots of inside Max Payne pseudo-jokes. It's kind of a parody of itself.

Not really enough to go on to make a proper judgement, but boy those graphics are sub-par.

That's what I kept thinking. I think Human Revolution spoiled me. The in-game stuff from the awkward stiff movements to the campy unreal-engine type blood effects and even the gestures and facial animations all looked jarred as hell. The colors, mood and music were fine, but in motion it just looked so completely shitty and lifeless.

Details from... somewhere.

  • The combination of Natural Motion's Euphoria character behavior system and Bullet Time adds a new level to Max's classic shoot-dodge moves. Shoot-dodge is not a canned animation, but a natural interaction with the environment, as Max will reach out to the floor as he dives, and naturally respond to objects in his way if you attempt to dive into a wall or obstacle. This marriage of slow-motion gunplay and Euphoria physics amplifies the cinematic action of Max Payne 3 significantly, and enemies will also respond realistically to each bullet fired.
  • The ever famous Noir style is still there.
  • The demo started with Max having hair and looking quite slick as opposed to the screens they showed a long time ago, but as the game progresses it will show just how crazy and desperate Max becomes to survive.
  • Dual-wielding is back and has a bigger role, any weapon can be thrown into the mix now, so you can carry a pistol in one hand and an Uzi in another.
  • The game will alter with time frequently taking the player back and forth to show what happened before and how it relates to the present.
  • Other characters from previous MP games will be back.
  • The game will not have regenerating health like many shooters nowadays, it will be the same as MP always had and health can be recovered by taking pills.
  • Max Payne 3 extends the concept of Bullet-Time to now include game areas of the game that will trigger set pieces involving Bullet-Time. These provide epic moments of action that allow Max to take out enemies in a new interpretation of Max Payne's signature style.
  • Bullet-Cams return: in keeping with the stylish gunplay for which Max is known, Bullet-Cams deliver players a reward for downing enemies with a satisfying final kill
  • Max Payne 3 takes the graphic novel panels of the earlier games and evolves them by utilizing in-game assets to create a motion comic-style approach.
  • James McCaffrey, the original voice of Max, is back. Not only as the voice of max, but Max's appearance, face and many of his movements in Max Payne 3 are all captured directly from James himself.
  • Max Payne 3 features an integrated cover system. Cover adds an extra strategic element to the classic shoot-dodge/bullet-time/ run-and-gun mechanics of Max Payne, providing players with new options in any given situation.
  • Based on what they say, the game doesn't feel like a mindless corridor shooter where the game just respawns enemies infinitely at every corner. Every stage was thought out well and has more strategy thrown into the mix giving it a distinctive feel.
  • Tremendous detail has been paid to every facet of Max Payne 3: Bullets destroy nearly everything in the environment, sweat will appear on Max's face and shirt as the heat of battle wears on, and blood soaks the clothing of his enemies. You'll also notice the minute details of the weapons themselves: hammers cock back, slides move, shells expel from the chamber and literally hundreds more.
  • Partners and sidekicks will play a large role in Max Payne 3. Hundreds of hours of custom motion-capture were done for individual characters, making traditional in-game encounters completely unique, such as enemies sweeping a room or simply the way Max's partners will behave as they move through the game.

^OK, I like what I see here, perhaps the trailer just didn't do the game justice.

Though I don't know how you can achieve the noir style in a South American setting.

James McCaffrey, the original voice of Max, is back. Not only as the voice of max, but Max's appearance, face and many of his movements in Max Payne 3 are all captured directly from James himself.

So I wasn't imagining things, it really does look like him.
Well some of those things sound interesting, but I still don't like the decision to take the story away from eternally gloomy New York. It makes as much sense as if the next Batman game after Arkham City was set in Hawaii or something LOL.

That actually looks pretty good.

If you ignore the fact that it's not Max Payne anymore.

On the other hand, there's every chance this will be the Resident Evil 4 of the franchise. Or not.

If there's any game that actually would benefit from a cover system, it's Max Payne. I'm excited for this.

I'm iffy about the cover, can't decide if it's a good fit or not. I can remember using cover in the first couple games, but I also remember running and gunning 90% of the time, so as long as they don't compromise that I'll be cool with it.

I remember using either dual pistols or dual uzis, and bullet dodging all over the place. Not so much using cover.

Well, I wouldn't be firing from cover so much. Since in Max Payne it is a lot of running and gunning. But say I run around a corner and there's a ton of enemies and I get hit. Instead of having to sprint away, I can take some cover, catch my breath, pop a few painkillers, and then jump out and Bullet Time their faces. :)

Anyone know if it will feature modding tools/support?

A cover system wouldn't be inherently bad. Even Neo used cover a lot during the lobby shootout to reload, swap weapons etc. If they could capture that flow in the game, it would be terrific.

another cover based shooter in a generic location featuring a bald super hero with cheesy lines, probably a shit pc port too

we all know the story "it's been there, done that"

max works for a huge corporation in brazil at the beginning
they try to kill the bad guys
the bad guys are actually the good guys
max joins the bad guys, and tries to kill the corporation mercs

THE END

Barnz, I swear you're just the voice of my evil/negative/pessimistic side.

My feeling is just this: it could be awesome and live up to what I want (and need) Max Payne 3 to be... but it probably won't. Until we have more data, I'll just hope for the former!

After watching the trailer, I wanted to dig inside my skull and scrape out the pain.

Gameplay looks good. However I still hate the decision to take the action to "sunny south america". It makes as much sense as making a Batman game where the action takes place on a sunny tropical island...

Headshots look great. That shotgun blast last kill/bullet time example was pretty awesome.

But, I'm now quite sure it won't have that noire/horror feeling that I loved from the first two...

Not sure about this whole "breaking payne" setting

Why the hell do all modern games need to take place in some dusty bright locale? I'm so sick of the desert and jungles, freaking give us a city setting like all other Max Payne games.

Shooting mechanics look nice, but it doesn't appear as if they changed any of the core gameplay. Wasted opportunity imho. If only they released modding tools...
